Question:
What do you think about the Obama administration pushing for global Internet "security"?

To me I think they are using the "security" part as a means to push government into the Internet and enslave us there.

What do you all think?

I think I'm pretty damn tired of the Obama administration invading every part of American peoples lives.

So are most other Independents. Libs better wake up and smell the coffee or they will lose the Senate and the White House in 2012. It's time for some common sense governing. While he wants to "control" the Internet, Rome is burning.

If the Obama administration is pushing for this, that opens up a host of possibilities, none of them reassuring. For one thing, I fail to see how one can justify having a global entity staking a claim that overrides the U.S. Constitution. Secondly, the term "security" in such a scenario inevitably begs the following question: How is "security" to be defined in the first place? Is any ban going to be implemented consistently, across the board, against websites that incite to violence or provide instructions with explosives? Or is any ban merely going to cater to the tastes and predilections of the authorities who are in charge of a hypothetical global government, which could take any number of forms during the time any such government manages to stand (eventually, I am convinced, global government is a Tower of Babel style scheme that is doomed to failure if tried)? These are interesting questions to ponder on this issue. One thing that is clearly indisputable is government will surely have more of a role on the Internet - and wariness about such power is, I submit, a healthy thing.

I recently read a book written by someone who is involved with the government

and the computer world.

I think many Americans would be scared sh*tless if they knew the danger we

face from Cyber.

Russia,China, Iran, or any group of high-tec muslim terrorists can almost bring our

country to its knees because our Internet system, and the cyber-world in general,

is so open to attack.

There are already ticking time-bombs encrypted in our energy-networks

which can closed down humongous sections of the country.

Imagine all of the West Coast with no lights, no phone service, no banking, no way for

the authorities to respond to emergencies.

There are tens of thousands of cyber attacks on our military.

Have our enemies already planted cyber-bombs that would detonate

in time to a national security attack?

Global Internet Security Update Aims to Prevent Cybercrime

“A cyber criminal can steal your money or your personal data without you even knowing it. Cyber crime doesn’t respect national boundaries,” said Rod Beckstrom, President and CEO of ICANN. “This upgrade will help disrupt the plans of criminals around the world who hope to exploit this crucial part of the Internet infrastructure to steal from unsuspecting people.”

The upgrade aims to protect against online fraud such as certain cybercrimes, cache poisoning and man-in-the-middle attacks. However it is not designed to protect against all attacks.

DNSSEC isn’t an antidote to all Internet security problems. It does not ensure confidentiality of data or protect against denial of service or many other attacks. The best way to protect yourself online is still to use common sense.

“DNSSEC is not a silver bullet to stop every cyber crime. But it will have a real and positive impact on the security of the Internet. This is one important step forward in the fight against cyber crime,” according to Beckstrom.

I think about it the same way I thought about it when President Bush first began pushing for the same thing. I think it's a good idea no matter the party in power.

If you're concerned about the government being able to monitor and observe all your Internet activity, you're way too late - they've been able to do that for years and no program exists that will allow you to block them. So, you'd best behave yourself - there's plenty of room in federal prison for bad boys and girls.

I don't think Obama cares about your porn habits bro, but he probably cares that terrorists in Iran can access the Colorado river spillway valves on the Hoover dam via the internet dude.
