Question:
Why do so many people buy pc's when mac's are clearly better?
2010-12-25 14:58:46 UTC
I just don't get it

pc's are ugly...mac's look way way nicer

and the funny thing is microsoft office is way better for mac's than for pc's...ironic that it was made by microsoft

mac's dont have very many viruses because let's face it, less than 10% of users own mac's and hackers dont get much benefit out of writing trojans or keylogger softwares that can hack into mac's when they can write the same viruses for pc's which is what over 90% of people purchase and use and therefore have much more information to loot

pc's come with stupid, annoying 30-day subscriptions to tons of software...it gets really annoying after a while because their pop-up ad's constantly appear to ask you to buy the full subscription and these make booting up your pc take much longer

internet explorer is the worst browser i have ever seen...it doesn't do a good job of filtering potentially harmful cookies which allows hackers and spam to more easily infiltrate your pc...not surprisingly, you have to spend so much money on software to combat malware, spam, spyware, and all sorts of garbage that enters your computer

also, iphoto is far better than the windows equivalent and the ilife package blows the windows packaging out of the water

People who know computers do not buy them based on looks. What's important is the hardware under the hood. You can get a PC that is much more powerful for the price of a comparable Mac. Mac uses hardware that is generally a year and a half behind

Plus you cannot upgrade them easily if at all, you cannot run 95% of software w/o buying Windows, and Apple's customization options are very poor

You still cannot even buy a $2000-2500 iMac that has the performance of the Windows PC I built a year ago for around $1200-1300

Apple rapes you on hardware prices for the SAME brand components that PCs use. If you compare two machines at the same price, the Apple will perform considerably worse since it uses outdated technology. An Intel Core 2 Duo on an entry level Mac is going to get crushed by a Core i7 on a similarly priced PC

If you don't like pre-installed software (which I don't either) you simply uninstall all the bloatware, download Firefox instead of IE, and download a free AV and Malwarebytes Antimalware

Brand familiarity. Cost. Lack of understanding about what Macs are and what they can do. Familiarity with the operating system. I use both but I very much prefer Macs as they are vastly more intuitive, can run Windows software now with the "Boot Camp" program (so you can buy PC software and still run it on a Mac - try that with a PC without being a computer wizard), they come with a ton of software already installed and require little software maintenance. The operating system doesn't crash entirely if an application fails. Macs ARE better, IMHO.

They are a closed system, they cost more, they are different from what most people are used to, people dislike Apple products as a reaction to the fanboys. Hmm, anything else?

Looks are irrelevant.

Yeah, internet explorer is pretty terrible. That's why I downloaded Firefox free. This is irrelevant, because we are discussing PC/Mac, not Internet Explorer.

I'd rather run Unix anyway, so whatever.

Many people buy pc's and laptops because they are far less expensive than Mac. Mac is a good product but a very expensive one. Not everyone can afford them. That is the same reason a lot of people drive Chevrolets instead of Mercedes. Clearly a Mercedes is a much better car but not everybody can afford the price tag.

For the same reason VHS was more popular than Betamax. (those are VCRs if you are too young to remember.) The answer is better marketing.

Well, where I live, the answer is simple: Macs cost a LOT more.

PC's have more freedom of choice in what you can get. Apples are very Limited.
