Question:
Oh No! How horrible is it that jobless claims are at 6 year low?
2013-08-15 17:01:58 UTC
The number of jobless claims reported by the Department of Labor fell to 320,000 seasonally adjusted for the week ending Aug. 10, ====>>> the lowest since Oct. 2007, before the start of the last recession.

The figure fell 15,000 from the previous week’s revised tally of 335,000. The four-week moving average for unemployment claims was 332,000, also the lowest level since late 2007 and a decrease of 4,000 from the previous week’s revised average of 336,000.

Although there may be some seasonal adjustment issues related to auto plant shutdowns, initial claims for unemployment insurance have moved lower recently, averaging about 333,000 in the third quarter of 2013, ===>>>consistent with pre-recession levels of claims, and well below the second quarter average of 345,000, according to the PNC Financial Services Group.

====>Bronars said “the primary reason” jobless claims are down is because fewer people are being laid off than before.

===>“You only qualify for unemployment insurance if you were laid off – so recent graduates who can’t find a job aren’t ever included in new jobless claims,” he said.

Through the magic of conservative logic, the lowest level of jobless claims in 6 years = the worst unemployment in 6 years.

I'm excited also it's down to 3.1% in North Dakota*, the 662,000 government jobs added in the last half of 2012 didn't hurt either.

how about those of us who have just given up, on miles miles. of driving. and, just plain tired of the phone not ringing biting our nails and the useless help wanted sighns. owe maybe a opening next week. my home mortage is about 3 years behind. just stopped paying on it. our life savings is gone. and car payment is due. dead end jobs washing dishes or burger king jobs. and now my health insurance is out the window. i must start sleeping in car. no prospects and no interviews. sold my last bit of furniture. jobs out there right. no hopes just plain given up.

Jobless _claims_, not the U6 number, and even that is skewed by the number who have just given up looking.

If more people are now in employment, then it can be expected that fewer 'Jobless' claims will be made than hitherto. It is known statistically as stating the bleedin' obvious.
