NEW YORK — What are parents to do when their child comes home from school with stories about “this creepy guy in my class” — and it turns out to be the teacher?
That’s a very real concern for parents with children in New York City public schools, where 14 teachers of highly dubious character have been reinstated to the classroom — and two others have been given “desk duty” — thanks to appeals by their powerful teachers union, the United Federation of Teachers.
NYDailyNews.com reports that 16 teachers “kept their jobs after being brought up on egregious charges, some sexual, some involving excessive personal familiarity with students.”
A few examples:
Gym and health teacher Willie Laraque was charged with bending a male student over a desk, leaning in to him and saying, “I’ll show you what is gay.” The Daily News reports Laraque is back in the classroom after paying a $10,000 fine.
Norman Siegel, a high school teacher, was accused of pressing his genitalia against a female student’s leg. Siegel only received a 45-day unpaid suspension, “although the arbitrator found that the girl’s charge was likely true” and that Siegel “was previously accused of a similar offense,” the Daily News writes.
There’s also a case involving Edward Cascio, a gym teacher who accepted pornographic pictures from a student — of another student. Cascio was back at work after serving his three-month suspension.

A man should be able to earn all the money hes capable of, and a company should be able to rid itself of dead beats

Yes. Your one example does not deify the rest of organized labor. I agree no one should have tenure, it causes abuse, laziness, apathy, not incentive to work and do a good job.

Unions will never be in the Electronics industry--when workers complain, the work is just shipped overseas. See Spectra Physics two years ago.

Unions only have strength in construction, etc, things we can't have done overseas. The whole reason unions stared was to get safe working conditions, minumum wqage, that affects all workers now.Withoiut them, we would go back to the ninetenth century. Don't u you believe for one minute employers would police themselves, they all just want max profit.

I only agree some have too much strength. The UAW at GM allowed a worker, any worker, to stop the line at any time for anything. Workers who proteseted their union's own policies said this.

And We bailed them out. I hate to say this, but it's sink or swim. Any company that runs itself out of business like this will eventually reorganise under better rules, and better products to compete, anyway. Just feeding coal to the fire makes it worse.

NO. At one time there was a need for unions and they served a needed purpose. Now there is no need for them. They are corrupt and keep the mafia element alive. If a person does a good job they will keep their job. If they do a bad job they should be fired or let go. Unions keep bad teachers and bad workers in jobs they don't deserve.

Trevor has a great factor right here. even although there are some people who're utilising worldwide warming as a potential for that reason and the environmental circulate hasn't extremely dealt with them properly adequate (removing the credibility of the vegetables (exceptionally the watermelons) could in all threat additionally help cut back the kind of deniers besides). those individuals who recognize that worldwide warming is a project that desires to be solved as antagonistic to an risk to tension human beings to settle for what they does no longer hassle-free settle for are quite prepared to apply the terrific technologies we've (i.e. nuclear potential, in all threat blended with slightly geoengineering) to unravel the project without a alleviation in our customary of residing (on account that we recognize that human beings could fairly a planet it extremely is slightly warmer than returning to mediæval days). besides, i do no longer purely like the belief of mass homicide.

Yes, very-much so.

Not so much in regards to negotiating expensive pensions at tax-payers expense......

but for job security, preventing unjust firings.

Unions are needed more-so in the private sector than public.

The problem isn't unions. The problem is conservatives who condone sexual abuse (e.g. their defense of Mark Foley), perversion (e.g. Sen. Craig, "Reverend" Haggard) and adultery (their support of people like Gingrich, Craig, etc.).

People have every right to join an organization to advance their own interests. That includes their interests at work. The only modern countries that ban unions are communist regimes -- which tells you what the right-wing is really after-- imposing a dictatorship on America.

people like you are completely irrational

do you anything at all about the history of the labor movement

the only reason there was a sizeable middle class in this country was due to unions fighting tooth and nail for the right to strike, the right to bargain collectively, and the right to have a modicum of respect on the job

like non-union teachers never have committed any crimes or indecencies

take a look at nonunion workplaces- most of the jobs I've worked in were nonunion, and many coworkers were poor workers, and they never got fired.

Yes, all unions are, are advocates for the workers.......by following your logic...I would expect you to do away with public defenders in criminal trials, cause why would they need an advocate?
