Some countries in Europe are less...Some are more. Same is true of regions withing the US. Minnesota for example is 1.4. You are 67 times more likely to be murdered in New Orleans.

Take into account the varying demographics and locations you can easily be as safe in some parts of the US as even western Europe. My town, in the south, actually has a violent crime rate much lower than even western Europe and its murder rate is virtually non-existent.
Sure, crimes happen in good places too. Just ask the Norwegians.
So, in short, you can't compare a country to a continent or even continents to continents or countries to countries.

On the flip side, I was in Copenhagen, Denmark and people would just leave their bikes unlocked.
In one German town I recently visited, I commented to a friend that every bike I saw was old and ratty. She said if you have a nice bike it WILL be stolen.
