Our two official languages are English and Welsh. Should Cornish and Gaelic be included as our official languages as well?

YES

Cornish needs to be revived. Also, Cornwall need to be considered an individual nation like Wales, England et cetera.

Why do we have to be apart of England? I do hope that one day Cornwall will be a serparate state; although remain apart of the UK.

All the best

Absolutely, Welsh was made an official language and it flourished, if you want to encourage these languages (and you should) then making them an official language is the way ahead.

As usual we will have the usual gripes about one language to unite us, but how has an increase in spoken Welsh divided us? Even the BNP types can't object because Welsh and Gaelic predate English so it's the step back to the dark ages they have been campaigning for.

Edit. Nom de guerre what the hell has it got to do with you what language the people of Wales choose to educate their children in? I don't know what radio show you have been listening to. The point about Welsh language education in Wales is that every one has a choice. No child can be forced to attend a welsh language school. They have a right by law to be educated in the language of their choice. However, every child educated in wales will do some welsh language lessons. It's only the ignorant and prejudiced who object to learning a little bit of a unique language that is central to the culture of the country they live in. It's like objecting to wearing tartan school uniform in scotland.

Why not?

I'm a Welsh speaker who learned English at school, All the Welsh speakers I know are fluent in both Welsh and English from a very early age (5 or 6 years old) something which helped me learn German, Albanian, Russian and Currently I'm learning Spanish

I can get a council form in Urdu, Hindi, Polish but can't get one in Welsh outside of Wales.

May as well make all of these official languages, they're half way there already!

By the way, I agree with Kernow being separated from England

Nome de Guerre, My first language is Welsh, it's what we spoke at home before I went to school. The area I'm from, Anglesey, is over 75% welsh speakers. If they didn't speak Welsh in schools then they wouldn't be able to communicate with the majority of the school.

YES I agree. Cornwall (kernow) SHOULD be a separate state. All nationalities that read this, there is a county in the UK called cornwall, and we as a majority consider ourselves not a part of England. The English are generally frowned upon by a lot of Cornish people.

Long live us Cornish, and let's hope English rule ends!!!

Welsh should not be an official language of the UK. it's inclusion only serves to encourage linguism (linguistic prejudice).

I remember hearing on the radio that English people living in Gwynedd, Wales were forced to send their children to a school, whose first language was Welsh, when they lived in a catchment area for a school where English was the first language. That type of treatment for people who move to another country, where their first language is the same as the main first language, for most people in that area, is a form of linguistic prejudice. The Gwynedd council are attempting to course a difficulty in communication between the parents and children; parents cannot help their children with homework, if it's written in a language foreign to them.

Welsh should not be taught as a first language in any part of the country, it creates an 'us and them' dynamic. To improve relations between the countries and regions within each country, one language, and one language, must be taught first, if it is linked to an aggressive history, and nationalistic pride as Welsh is.

No... The trouble with having different languages is they have a disabling effect upon communicating. The founding fathers of the USA selected English from among the many languages used in the colonies to eliminate one of the worst things that can divide people.

Now, all of the illegal immigrants want both English and Spanish versions on signs, in legal classrooms, and in legal writings. But, this goes against our objective for having one language in order to simplify communicating.

A definite no! I understand that there is a need to preserve our knowledge of our ancient past but it is that.

The past. But make them into 'official' languages? No!

I have sat in a bar and listened to Gaels deliberately speaking their tongue to exclude English speaking visitors - including other Scots -. A more enlightened one of their community turned on them addressing them in English and relayed their speech to us speaking of the 'invasion' of their community by 'foreigners' (Sassenachs). We 'foreigners' were almost exclusively tourists and were a significant part of their economy. Britain needs more unity, not less.

depends what you mean. If you mean England then English should be the only official language of England but if your talking about the UK then sure, there should be more official languages.

Would Gaelic not be Welsh

Pays de Galles is the french translation for Wales

Which in English means Land of the Gaelic

Nom de guerre If they were taught in France would you Learn French to help with the Homework

Anglesey in Gwynedd is a perfect example that English is not the main language it is the second

Are you not creating an 'us and them' dynamic.By saying the whole country should speak English when there is a country next door that has the oldest European language

I would not like it if People tried to eradicate English would you?

Yes, and Scots too. Sure, it may just be English that sounds funny and spelt completely different, but let's not upset our Scottish Brethren.

I'm not of English descent, but I believe English should be the official language of the UK. We're stronger when we're united by a common language, not divided by a bunch of dying languages.
