Question:
Why do people care if suspected terrorists are tortured for information? Are we fighting for their rights now?

Seriously.....if you're even suspected of terrorism there's a GOOD reason why !
I don't think we should be out breaking bones, burning or cutting off fingers or anything but i feel a good ole fashion ***** slapping and some fun water torture to the point they can't take it anymore and beg for the abuse to stop is perfectly fine we shouldn't be caring about suspected terrorists rights thats just absurd.

Yes it seems we are worried about their rights. Isn't that a kick in the pants.

I heard the Ministry of Defense was looking at Andy G... they think he might be an enemy combatant. I wonder what will flash through his mind when he's informed that he doesn't have a right to a trial, or an attorney, or even a phone call and that he will be held indefinitely or at least until the Ministry of Defense decides he's no longer useful. And just exactly what "probable cause" did the Minister of Defense have? Well, seems that some scorned ex-girlfriend of his called up and dropped a fake dime on him. And that's all it took. Warrant? That's sooooo yesterday too! Just an example. There are examples of a number of men being released that were never charged with anything. And if you have no recourse, and you had a corrupt government, what makes you think you'd ever be freed to tell anyone about it?

You are absolutely right. What most people don't seem to realize is that these people don't play by our rules. We need to stop giving these people more rights and worry more about saving lives.

When these terrorists capture one of our soldiers, they do unspeakable things to them. Have we all forgotten about a certain e-mail the American people were sent? Have we all forgotten that we all watched while that poor man's head was cut off? We don't do anything close to that to our prisoners.

When we use water torture, it doesn't threaten anyone's life. It scares them into giving us the info that we need to save lives. What's wrong with that? These people are not sorry for what they are doing. We've heard that time and again on news reports. They would gladly torture and brutally kill our soldiers for the simple joy of it if they had the chance. Don't forget folks, these people are raised to hate us and want all of us dead. How else do you fight an enemy like that? We do what is necessary without taking lives. I am behind our troops 100% in their task.

In war there are 2 types of people: Combatants and non combatants.

If you are a combatant, then you fall into 1 of 2 sub categories:

If you wear a uniform and are in the military of a sovereign nation, then you are a soldier and if captured you are a POW and are afforded the rights of a POW under the Geneva convention. One right is that you will not be put on trial. And, as a POW you are held until the end of hostilities.

If you dont fall into the above category, then you are a spy and basically have no rights. You can be summarily executed on the battlefield.

With that said, I would hate to think that some Afghan reported that another Afghan was a terrorist, just so he could steal his goats or poppy fields or for what ever bogus reason and then the innocent guy gets sent off to be tortured.

But Obama is talking about releasing the guy who planned the attack on the US Cole and releasing the guy who planned the attack on the marine barracks in Lebanon. If Obama releases those guys, he shouldn't be saluted by military members ever again.

For you "Bill of Rights" idiots. If our military is in a fire fight in Iraq and we capture people who were shooting at us, they have nothing to do with our bill of rights.

Baby girl I raised ya betta!

In Lyons France, sits a massive computer with the names of over 10 million Terrorist suspects? I doubt your name is on it. You might even be a change agent,,who knows?

But criticizing the government and Obama gets your name posted there!! You become a suspect. Soon criticism will become an arrestable offense.

I am a viet nam vet. You think I have not seen the results of "report this" buttons on your computer?

Torture here in america?

Been here for decades. You will don't know because you do not care enough to visit the prisons here. Goodbye!

1: So you believe in guilty until proven innocent?

2: Torture does not provide valid information even a complete moron should know that if you are tortured long enough then you will say anything. If they are firm in their ideology they will lie because suffering is martyrdom and confessing would lose them their place in the afterlife. If they are innocent (which many of them are) then they will just say anything which sends you in a wildgoose chase and distracts you from what actually is happening.

3: It's illegal.

4: It's immoral.

5: It drags you down to their level.

6: It makes your enemy more determined.

It is people like you that make your country universally despised. I feel for the genuine, kind, intelligent Americans who have had their name tarnished by sick, brain-washed morons.

Neither the Constitution, nor the Bill or Rights apply to non-citizens. I know that scares the Libs in this country, but it’s true, Terrorists from foreign countries are not protected by our laws. We did sign the Geneva Convention, and to date, we have not broken it. Those we fight against have. They kill civilians with impunity, they chop off the heads of captured troops, and they get away with it because the media in this country is too busy making sure the have all the rights of a citizen, to notice what they themselves have done.

We're not fighting for their well being we're fighting for ours

If we as supposedly the most moral country on earth officialy acknowledge that torture is an acceptable way to obtain information from prisoners who are suspected of commiting a crime then we have let the world know that it is acceptable for the world to torture our people when they are captured under similar circumstances.

The problem lies in what torture does to our relationships with our allies and the undecided in the world. To sway them in our direction it helps if we don't appear to be monsters.

I know there are circumstances in which I would do torture, but, afterwords I would dispose of the bodies most carefully, so as not to upset my neighbors and the children by forcing them to think of things they don't want to and shouldn't have to face.

The truth can get you lynched.

The one thing I have always been proud of as an American is that we support freedom and justice for all.

To torture a "suspect" does not abide by this position.

Our strength in our beliefs in freedom is what makes us strong, not night raids, disappearances and torture.

Your view is a path to totalitarianism.
2009-02-10 08:52:16 UTC
Because we're "better than that."

America: the land of treating our enemies with respect, allowing white collar criminals to live in their swanky condos and pleabargain a special deal that keeps them out of jail, and aborting healthy fetuses because mommy got gangbanged and forgot to take her birth control and doesn't feel like having a kid just now...
2009-02-10 08:51:59 UTC
In America, we believe in something called "innocent until proven guilty." I don't mind torturing convicted terrorists, but we shouldn't do it to the suspected ones. We should prove they are guilty of being a terrorist before taking away their rights. Otherwise, we are no better than terrorists.

Agreed, insofar as the suspect isn't that mother in the news who was arrested for suspected terrorism for spanking her kids.

(Why do we have all that padding back there anyway?)

Not necessarily many of Free Thinkers will be branded Terrorist is Obama and the lefties have their way.

I never believed in torture.

I do believe in a quick fair trial and the death penalty.

I do not believe we owe them attorneys but the should be able to have them if they can afford them.

Why procrastinate try them Kill them or let them go.
2009-02-10 08:49:21 UTC
There's a little thing called the Geneva convention that the US is a part of. It basically says "We consider torture wrong. We will not torture anybody because it is wrong. We will not stoop to the level of rogue nations by torturing people".

Libs live in some fantasy world where they think if they just give a terrorist a latte he will take off his bomb belt & plant flowers......

Personally I would feed them to the sharks off Cuba as the boat leaving Gimto suddenly starts sinking due to a few drilled holes. PROBLEM SOLVED!
2009-02-10 08:50:49 UTC
It goes back to the belief that if we lower ourselves to their level, then we're no better than they are. But my point is for democrats and liberals to define torture! Because personally I see a HUGE difference between being naked in front of female guards, dogs barking at you, rooms that are uncomfortably chilly, and hurt feelings, -VS- having your head cut off with a bread knife over the internet.

PS: Since when did the United States Constitution or Bill of Rights apply to non-US citizens who are waging a terrorist war against our country?

I guess be-heading and blowing up people doesn't count as torture - you can't apply Geneva convention standards to these animals.

You appear to completely fail to understand the principle upon which this country was founded, and the basic guidelines of the Geneva Convention, to which we are signatories.

Go on realogrish.com and go to the "beheading" videos and then make up your mind if they deserve human rights. The whole business of water boarding and how it's tough on them is ridiculous. If you believe that our interrogation tactics are tough then go over there and see their interrogation tactics. While you're there, go hug a tree.

It's just more propaganda from the sympathizer of a president that what we do is wrong.

No kidding. And people get all teary that John McCain got roughed up after dropping incendiary bombs on civilians.

Murderers like him deserve the toothpicks under fingernails treatment.
2009-02-10 08:53:34 UTC
Everybody on this page that references the bill of rights and the geneva convention do not realize one important thing. The bill of rights only applies to citizens of the U.S. and the geneva convention doesn't have any stipulations for enemy combatants (those who fight without a country, flag or uniform). SO, you all are wrong.
Your horns are showing Morris.

You don't have a clue.

Look up the Geneva Convention... I'm sorry you support complete moral decay in this country.

Torture made us look no better than some third world country.

Read the Constitution while you are at it... you lack any education if you are serous with this question.

Then you are saying you think Saddam Hussein was correct in his treatment of political prisoners.
2009-02-10 08:50:16 UTC
I agree somewhat, if they are not on American territory and they are not part of a official fighting force than the Geneva convention does not apply to them

ty Drew its weird to try to place our rights on non US citizens who are not even part of a Army and wear ski masks wth

So you prefer The Bill of Rights to Charmin for your toiletry needs. Interesting.

!. It is against the Geneva Convention.

2. People being tortured will tell you what you "want" to hear, not necessarily the truth.
2009-02-10 08:48:02 UTC
Because here in the USA we have The Constitution and The Bill of Rights.(Maybe you've heard of them?) If you want to flush those down the toilet then you're just as bad as a terrorist.

because this is America! our policy of treating our enemies as we treat our friends pre-dates the US Constitution.

So if Obama declares you a terrorist and tortures you, you'll claim you deserved it?

Think, then post.

KEYWORD.......SUSPECTED..........what about suspected don't you understand? Everyone's rights should be protected until PROVEN guilty.

Don't listen to the weenies here. They are just idealistic little punks.

Navy Seals are waterboarded as part of their training. Its not real torture.

I bet you sissies would be singing a different tune if one of your loved ones had been beheaded alive by one of those jerks.
