In Canadian terms, a Liberal would be someone who supports policies that are more in the middle of the spectrum. That is to say these people support an open market system with some controls, such as the Consumer protection Act. They also support some social safety nets such as Employment Insurance. On the other hand the Conservatives are more to the right of the spectrum, and are more inclined to have no gov. intervention in the market place. They dislike governmental controls, safety nets, or anything else that raise taxes to the individual or business interests. Let's just say that Canada would not have Medicare if it were not for the Liberals.

These terms are not used with scientific precision on an everyday basis by ordinary people.

First Liberal is not synonymous with Democrat and Conservative is not synonymous with Republican. If you don't get that you'll be forever confused about politics.

So there are liberals and conservatives in both parties.

Secondly, these terms have been used differently over time and historically.

Our founding fathers were considered liberals in their time.

Generally, a conservative is someone who is concerned with restoration of traditional values, maintaining the status quo.

A liberal is someone who looks to the future not the past and is more concerned with progress and change like Obama.

A conservative is someone who is working to conserve something. There are different kinds of conservatives according to what they are trying to conserve. Such as: [1]political conservatives who are trying to conserve the political status quo [2]fiscal conservatives who are trying to conserve the monetary status quo by saving money [3]environmental conservatives who are trying to conserve the environment by preventing its destruction, often by political conservatives. Notice that these terms all have completely different meanings depending on what is being conserved although political conservatives will try to mislead you into thinking they are related. Political conservatives always ultimately lose and are discredited in their specific issues and must cover this by creating as much confusion as possible in the basic political definitions to preserve deniability and this is the reason for all the confusion. A liberal as far as I can tell is an ordinary conservative who is not extreme enough to suit the others in their common ideological objective of preserving the political status quo. But why is a political status quo worth preserving that is allowing two per cent to own most of the wealth, anyway?

Here is a text book definition. On tv, fox news is conservative, MSNBC is liberal. Being either is a matter of principles, with a variety of interpretations. For example, I am a liberal, but am also pro life (usually a conservative trait).

Liberal vs Conservative

[1] Liberalism is a standing argument between classical liberals and modern liberals, who are usually called conservatives and liberals, respectively.

[2] All liberals share a common set of values; liberals believe in the rule of law, individual rights, democracy, the division of powers, the relative freedom and equality of individuals and free markets. What liberals bitterly disagree upon, however, is the interpretation of these beliefs.

[3] Liberalism represents the center of the political spectrum. Unlike libertarianism, socialism, fascism, and communism, liberalism is not an ideology.

[4] The differences between liberals (i.e. conservatives and modern liberals) may be summarized as follows:

Conservative

1. Natural law

2. Established institutions

3. Liberty over equality

4. Suspicion of power

5. Exceptionalism

6. Individualism

Liberal

1. Positive law

2. Progress

3. Equality over liberty

4. Benevolent government

5. Human Perfectibility

6. Community

[5] Moderate liberals ("centrists") tend to either agree with different principles from each of the two strains of liberalism, or to remain flexible in their preferences to accommodate changing circumstances.

There are different types:

Social Liberal: People should be allowed to live their lives as they see fit, as long as when they do so they don't limit other peoples ability to do the same.

Social Conservative: Some behaviors are harmful simply by existing and should be limited. For example same sex relationships are bad, even behind closed doors.

Fiscal Liberal: The goverment should handle everything, and you should be happy they take you paycheck through taxes.

Fiscal Conservative: You want to keep government small and decide for yourself how to spend your money.

Socialist Liberal Conservative

Socialist (labour in UK) - Socialism refers to a broad set of economic theories of social organization advocating state or collective ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods, and an egalitarian society characterized by equal opportunities for all individuals and a fair or egalitarian distribution of wealth. Modern socialism originated in the late nineteenth-century working class political movement as well as the intellectual movement that criticized the effects of industrialization on society. Karl Marx posited that socialism would be achieved via class struggle and a proletarian revolution which represents the transitional stage between capitalism and communism.

Liberal - Liberalism emphasizes individual rights and equality of opportunity. Within liberalism there are various streams of thought which compete over the use of the term "liberal" and may propose very different policies, but they are generally united by their support for a number of principles, including freedom of thought and speech, limitations on the power of governments, the rule of law, an individual's right to private property, free markets, and a transparent system of government. All liberals, as well as some adherents of other political ideologies, support some variant of the form of government known as liberal democracy, with open and fair elections, where all citizens have equal rights by law.

Conservative - Conservatism is a political and social term whose meaning has changed in different countries and time periods, but which usually indicates support for the status quo or the status quo ante. Cultural conservatism is a philosophy that supports preservation of the heritage of a nation or culture.

You should look at some quite angry liberals like the late Andy Rooney, Bob Beckel, or Ed Shultz. Conservative comics like Ron White are much funnier than the likes of those like Maher, since those like Ron make jokes about society and everyday life, whereas those like Maher usually just use profanity and insults.

Conservatives tend to let business and individuals take care of their own problems and liberals tend to think that the government should take care of the problems.

That is as simple as I can get it but is way more complex then I can get into on YA.

Liberal

Liberals usually embrace freedom of choice in personal matters, but tend to support significant government control of the economy. They generally support a government funded "safety net" to help the disadvantaged, and advocate strict regulation of business. Liberals tend to favor environmental regulations, defend civil liberties and free expression, support government action to promote equality, and tolerate diverse lifestyles.

Conservative

Conservatives tend to favor economic freedom, but frequently support laws to restrict personal behavior that violates "traditional values." They oppose excessive government control of business, while endorsing government action to defend morality and the traditional family structure. Conservatives usually support a strong military, oppose bureaucracy and high taxes, favor a free-market economy, and endorse strong law enforcement.

Liberals face facts as they lay as opposed to how they might wish them to be. Conservatives are just the opposite.

Liberal: A liberal is so open minded that their brain has fallen out. They don't think in failure and success, they only believe in misfortune and "less privileged'. Society, for them, only consists of poor people, greedy rich CEO's and victims.
