Question:
Why was Bush's response to Katrina somehow worse than Obama's response to Sandy?
2013-12-24 08:02:17 UTC
The left more or less LAMBASTED the Bush Administration for it's slow response to Hurricane Katrina victims in New Orleans. (even though they mayor didn't evacuate the city until the night before, and even though the governor didn't request federal aid for nearly a week).

But where is the outcry of criticism for the Obama Administration's response to Super Storm Sandy victims who are STILL homeless after over a year?

"NEW YORK (AP) -- As a second New Year since Superstorm Sandy approaches, many coastal residents are still waiting for New York, New Jersey and New York City to distribute billions of federal dollars that were intended to go directly to people struggling to rebuild their homes.

Only a fraction of that money has been spent, leaving storm victims at the mercy of a frustrating maze of bureaucracy. Depending on where they live, the checks could be anywhere from days to many more months away." http://news.yahoo.com/long-waits-aid-sandy-victims-114710057.html?bcmt=comments-postbox

The conservative contempt for the power of the federal government was apparent in Bush's response to Katrina. People lived in abject squalor in the New Orleans Convention Center for DAYS before help arrived.

But Obama and the liberals believe in a more expansive role of the federal government - one that allows it to provide help when disaster strikes. That's why following Hurricane Sandy the National Guard was in Hoboken the next day distributing supplies.

SOMEHOW?

Bush put an incompetent moron, with NO expertise in charge of FEMA. the Feds did nothing to prepare.

When it hit, tens of thousands of people were in the stadium that had lost part of it's roof; they went without food or water for DAYS, while Bush flew around the country partying. He got on stage with a group and pretended to be a musician; he delivered a birthday cake to McCain.

Literally, flew around partying while people were suffering for DAYS.

When the screams of the citizenry FINALLY got through, he had an event staged. The lights went on in New Orleans, and the people there rejoiced that the power was back. Bush gave a talk to TV cameras, then they packed up, shut down power, and left the city in darkness again.

It was an astonishing instance of not giving a crap.

Obama, on the other hand, put QUALIFIED people in charge of FEMA. They prepared. He was on the job, not vacationing, in case he was needed to make decisions and get further assistance in.

Although there were a couple of areas that they hadn't realized were in bad shape, they did what they could to help people, as quickly as they could.

The main criticism was the Federal governments slow response to Katrina. It took them several days to even get a state of emergency declared and was days before federal aid started to roll in.

In Sandy Federal Aid was there before the storm even arrived.

Now in all fairness, Katrina wasn't really Bush's fault. It was the people in charge of the various departments that failed to act fast enough and it got caught up in Federal red tape. Bush did have almost all of them resign, and put in more competent people in their place. It showed when Sandy rolled in.

With Former President Bush, liberals ignored the fact that FEMA CANNOT ACT until requested by the locality. The President cannot order them in, so Bush did nothing wrong at all in that equation. The law was followed, but liberals did not like that and blamed him.

With Sandy, per the article listed, it is not on the federal level anymore, it is about disbursement at the local level, so there should be no criticism of President Obama here because he does not control the local disbursement.

The attacks on Former President Bush were wrong and ignorant, but they do not justify attacking President Obama for a situation he does not control.

I may not like President Obama, but I will not (and do not) condone attacks that are not justified.

President Obama's actions were quick and decisive.

1,800 people did not drown like Katrina.

That is why George W. Bush is the worst President in the history of Western Civilization.

1,800 people died during Sandy and the botched response from Bush. Claims the Governor didn't invite him in are the usual fake news garbage.

Dear PETER,, 1,800 people were NOT drowned in Katrina....the total number of deaths due to Katrina is 235, and that is from the Caribbean to the east coast of the U.S....facts are so easy to check, but the low information voter is happy to be this ill-informed....fact-check !

Yea. What you're citing is criticism of the Obama administration. It's a point AGAINST your argument, buddy.

Also, the outcry is proportionate to the body count.

"many coastal residents are still waiting for New York, New Jersey and New York City to distribute billions of federal dollars..." They already have the money so the federal government has done it's part. Sounds like the states need to get on the ball...

Because the failure of the levees around New Orleans wasn't expected, causing the situation there to be more than what FEMA prepared for.

Katrina happened under conservative watch......so it's a TERRIBLE response. Sandy was under a Liberal...so it's no big deal. Typical liberal logic.

No, actually Bush's response was far superior to 0bama photo with fat boy!!

It was not Bush's responsibility that the idiot mayor even couldn't get the buses going, or that the people who lived In New Orleans are complete idiots.

Hell, 0BowMa couldn't even formulate a response to an armed attack on a US Embassy in a terrorist-infested muslim country, like Libya. If he wasn't capable of responding to the obvious, acts of God are definitely way over his head.
