Question:
Does Liberalism have nothing but identity politics left?

Since liberalism cannot offer the usual economic reforms--higher wages, shorter hourss, social safety nets, etc., because the capitalist system cannot afford them, what will liberalism offer now? I contend that it will offer nothing but unbridled, 24-hour-a-day identity politics. Identity politics is defined as followed: The laden phrase “identity politics” has come to signify a wide range of political activity and theorizing founded in the shared experiences of injustice of members of certain social groups. Rather than organizing solely around belief systems, programmatic manifestoes, or party affiliation, identity political formations typically aim to secure the political freedom of a specific constituency marginalized within its larger context. Members of that constituency assert or reclaim ways of understanding their distinctiveness that challenge dominant oppressive characterizations, with the goal of greater self-determination.

The Democratic party long ago embraced identity politics and abandoned any semblance of class politics. Now it has nothing to offer workers, and so, with the help of its media mouthpieces, it puts identity politics on display. The election of Obama and his Supreme Court nomination are the latest cases of identity politics trumping all.

What else does Liberalism have?

Liberals recognize that there are different people in this country and that they should have the opportunity to participate in a government of the people. Conservatives have apparently always had a problem with that concept. Now conservatives are trying to define liberal politics by projecting their insular racial and ethnic viewpoints onto others.

As for the economic system, the capitalist system can't afford the progressive economic benefits right now because the system has been run into the ground by bad Republican policies. As the economy recovers, liberals will continue to press forward on behalf of ordinary Americans.

Most liberals are like whiny babies, doesn't matter what the issue. If an issue arises, they're going to be against the majority. The rest that go with the flow, are at best confused. Liberals live in a fog of lies, so thick you could cut it with a knife!

At least the Democrats make an effort to deliver what they promise. The Republicans say one thing and do another consistently. They promise smaller government but they make it bigger. They promise less spending then double the national debt in eight years. Everything they say is a lie. I would rather have a President who cares about the people and wants to change things for the better, whether he succeeds or not, than one who is transparently trying to con us.

[edit]

boogreenboo, fascism is a far right-wing ideology. Every time you people bring up fascism, you just show how little you know.

Very good post.

Since they no longer have any identity, they are a ship adrift in the night and have been relegated to name calling, knee-jerk-emotional name calling and facism such as what the Democratic Congress under Nancy Pelosi is pushing through congress for her whore President "Obama" to sign into law.

This country is swifty headed toward facism and its a scary thing that no one is crying out to denounce it.

They're race-baiters and name-callers. Nazis branded people bad things for their agenda too. It's the strategy of intimidation.
