Question:
Why do so many whites oppose reparations for blacks?
2020-04-26 15:01:29 UTC
As the oppressing race, whites need to support blacks and help lift them from their oppression.

Aren’t whites who oppose reparations ring racist?

I'm not nor have I ever oppressed anyone. Blacks living today are not being oppressed either, despite your guilty rhetoric. They've never been slaves either. It's going to be hard to get their great great great great great grandfather the money for reparations. Blacks today suffered nothing to get it.

Furthermore, my father's family didn't get here until 1920 about 60 years AFTER slavery was abolished. My mothers grandmother came here during the Irish Famine. She couldn't have afford a slave if she wanted one.

My mother was a member of the NAACP in the 50s when she was welcome. My father actually fought people from the south who dared call people the N word back in the day.

Now if YOU want to give your money to Blacks, I'm sure many wouldn't turn you down. I already work very hard to not only support my own family but those who chose to do nothing with their educational opportunities and refuse to work at McDonalds but can't seem to keep their legs closed.

Funny how leftists group all whites into one bubble. Does that include whites still living in Europe during slavery, ancient tribal peoples in Scandinavia who are white, and Irish who weren't even considered white until the 1900s?

There are no American slaves that are still alive, so we owe reparations for nothing. Even the children of slaves have long since passed away.

So who is there to give reparations to?
2020-04-26 16:02:41 UTC
1. Blacks were enslaved by their own people.

2. The "white" people who brought them here were Portuguese.

@Moron, the Portuguese started the Atlantic slave trade. People of color invented slavery in the first place.

I am definitely in favor of paying reparations for blacks. I am in favor of paying a generous sum to any African American who will renounce US citizenship and 'return' to west Africa permanently, and promise never to return to the USA. And we could also pay for a one way plane ticket to west Africa. That would be a fair exchange. And we could include a deep apology for bringing their ancestors to the USA in the first place. Let's correct the injustice all the way. I like it.

White liberals oppose it the most. If white liberals really wanted reparations it would have already been done. White liberals are frienemies.

your question and the premise in general is blacks are inferior genetically and cannot ever achieve on their own without handouts from whites.

Almost every group has been oppressed at one time in history

IRISH were slave before blacks in the colonies yet there is never affirmative action for them as a group, WHY ?

Even the history re-writers call their salary indentured servitude, and by lies renaming slavery somehow it is OK.

As well those who rewrite history fail to remember Africans were made slaves by other Africans .. the reparations should be there.

An estimated 750,000 soldiers died in the war between the states that resulted in the end of slavery for the blacks ALL the descendants of those slaves owe reparations to those families who lost member in the US Civil war.  Many of those who died were Irish slaves and descendants of Irish slaves.

As well the Europeans were in charge of the colonies and brought slaves here to trade for goods .... not the USA ... THE USA did not exist.

Africa and Europe should pay them?

no one alive today was a slave under the US government, and none one alive today owned slaves in the USA.

the myth of lack of inheritance is erased by the fact their ancestors could have chosen death not surrender in tribal wars of Africa and they would not exist today.

undoing history is the stuff of world wars

Reparations is the yoke of keeping people down by telling them they are not capable on their own

most blacks do not want reparations and the lie they cannot get ahead is a insult by do gooder whites and a handful of blacks claiming to represent them all.

as well Reparations were made and a entire nation for free black slaves was created by the USA for them -- Liberia

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberia

those blacks still in the USA had ancestors who choose not to leave and take the reparations of the day, That too would be those who should be accountable.

REPARATIONS would be a HUGE step backward for black Americans. Many people would die. [but you have to have an imagination to understand that] And what happens next? After the checks have been cashed - any black person who dares to bring up the injustices of the past will be told to, "Shut up! You've been payed off. It's over now. Move on!"

Conceptually, it sounds like a good idea. Problem is, who qualifies? Would you have to prove you are descended from a slave in the US and what if you cannot? What if your ancestors were slaves in another country? What if you are a recent immigrant, or even just a post-slavery immigrant, to the US, do you qualify? What if I am white, my wife is black, and to keep it simple, let's say she is directly descended from slaves in the US and we have 2 children together, do they get half a check while she gets a full check? Assuming all of this could be figured out, how long would the reparations continue?

So many questions if the goal is direct payments, perhaps something more generally focused on low income black communities might work such as an infusion of resources into schools in those communities, but still, how much and for how long?

As time marches on, it becomes harder and harder to parse out the victims and the benefits. And we haven't even touched on Native Americans or Latinos.

Handing out tax money to people solely based on genetics is un-Constitutional.  If money is to be distributed, then eligibility needs to be open to everyone.  Not to mention, black people who are alive today have never been slaves and are free to make as much money as any other person in America.  Also, no white person today should be held responsible for acts done hundreds of years ago.

With that said, anyone who is in favor of reparations should start a private fund and give as much money as they like to American blacks.  That’ll never happen though.

This isn't North Korea. Whites who oppose reparations are interested in fairness. There is a general principle in America that only guilty people should be punished.

Economic lynchings of innocent people, based on skin color, isn't a good policy any government should undertake.

However, if you are looking to hold any "guilty" party accountable. It should be the Democratic National Committee (DNC)" One year before the Civil war, every slave in America was owned by a democrat. It is almost the only institution that condoned slavery, that is still alive today. You might try the KKK but there are only about 3,000 members in the USA. They don't have much money. Good luck with retributions. Unless your aim is to economically lynch innocent white people based on the color of their skin.
2020-04-27 06:06:30 UTC
If you are referring to reparations for slavery, then I completely agree with you that anyone who was a slave should have been paid massive reparations.  Unfortunately, that ship has long since sailed -- there are no former slaves still living.

That being said, it's also worth noting that my ancestors immigrated to America from Hungary and Italy in the 1890s, long after slavery had been abolished.  They never owned slaves.  Do I owe anybody reparations for things that took place in America long before my family even lived here?  I'm just curious how you think this would all work...
2020-04-27 00:20:30 UTC
Yeah, I’m waiting for my “reparations” also. I’m waiting for the black teenagers in the section 8 housing complex I live in to return the $300 worth of stuff they stole from my car. Including a Swiss Army tool that my father gave me before he died and I now no longer have to remember him by. And then one of them rode by on his little bike and called me a “retard” after that. Adding insult to injury. I’m an older guy so what was I supposed to do...challenge him and his posse to a fight? So maybe they could steal more stuff from my car or completely vandalize it afterwards? So where are my reparations? Where are my reparations for the two nice 10 speed bikes black teenagers tried to steal when I was younger, trying to break the U-locks off of them with sledgehammers and destroying the bikes in the process? I didn’t get any reparations for that either.  Or being threatened by one of them I caught in the act... as he raised the hammer over his head, threatening to cave in my skull with it when I challenged him after catching him and his boy in the act. Why haven’t I received “reparations” for all that destruction of my property as well as the threats to my life? Huh? For being robbed, threatened, insulted and victimized by these blacks???

What did I do to them? I didn’t steal their sh it and I wasn’t their slave owner. Why do you keep posting the same ‘anonymous’ question with slightly different wording all the time anyway? As s hole.

2020-04-26 23:06:01 UTC
Because of white guilt and racism. They don't want to have to compete with blacks. Economics is the great equalizer. White supremacy measures their success based on how bad the black person is doing in America. So they try to blame the victim for failing in a system designed for the victim to fail. It's equivalent to blaming a rape victim for being raped.
2020-04-26 21:03:32 UTC
I'm all for the former owners of slaves paying reparations to their former slaves.  How many of either can you produce?  Tell us why today's Caucasians should pay a penny to today's N'egroes when none of the former ever held any of the latter as slaves.  My ancestors never owned any slaves and the same goes for the majority of people today.  Why should we be punished for the actions of someone else's ancestors over whom we had no control?

By the way, sparky, PEOPLE oppressed PEOPLE.  RACES did NOT oppress RACES.  Don't try to punish an entire race for what a few members of that race did several generations ago.

Blacks have had equal access to all opportunities a Whites for decades now, culminating in a Black man becoming the President of the United States of America (as well as his privileged opportunities in life). Many Black people are successful, even rich business owners and/or CEOs. They find success in all walks of life.

Blacks have gotten their "lift" from things like affirmative action in the 1960's through the 90's. The only thing holding Blacks back (for those who let themselves be held back) these days are poor respect for education, by them or their parents, government that limits their chances for good education or economic circumstances (the equal opportunity oppressor).

The only people who should qualify for reparations are former slaves or children of them. To my knowledge, none of those people are alive today. They are the only ones stunted by their experiences of slavery. Everyone else have had full access to the pursuit of happiness promised by the Declaration of Independence or rights guaranteed by the Constitution.

Giving free money the a whole class of people simply because they choose to see themselves as victims, is itself, racist.

No, I think you are racist as evidence by calling whites the "oppressing race".

Most, if not all ethnic groups, have suffered historic oppression of one form or another including most "white" ethnic groups.

Take slavery for example. Blacks are not the only people to have been enslaved and whites are not the only people to have practiced slavery. Ancient Greeks enslaved the peoples they conquered, so did the Romans enslave Celts and Germanic people. Indeed the Moors, from North African, enslaved Christian Europeans. It is estimated that in 1780 the Moors had over a million white slaves. Do they owe me reparations?

Slavery has been practiced throughout all of recorded history in many diverse places in the world. So whites in particular did not "invent" slavery as is often claimed. It was simply a common and broadly accepted practice.

The first person I know of who opposed slavery as a moral principle (not just the enslavement of his own ethnic group) was saint Patrick of Ireland. Indeed, the modern emancipation movement grew out of the Western Enlightenment. So, not only are whites not the exclusive inventors of slavery they are the inventors of freedom.

If people - as individuals or as a group - wish to better their condition it is a better strategy to refrain from behaving as victims. A victim mindset does not engender success, it engenders excuses.

If you think you are owed something as a birthright simply by virtue of the color of your skin and that others are morally inferior to you, again simply because of their ethnicity, then you truly are a racist.

The "question" is riddled with false assumptions.

- Assumes only whites would be against reparations

- Assumes that racism is a function of what race one is instead of behaviour

- Assumes that the function of reparations is to "lift someone from oppression" or to mitigate racism.

The best way to understand reparations is via actual reparations in our time, Holocaust reparations.

Holocaust reparations do not simply go to Jews. They go to Holocaust survivors, i.e. the actual victims of the Holocaust. The reparations are paid by the perpetrators of the Holocaust.

- Not all blacks were enslaved back then

- Reparation is done to the actual victims by the actual people who caused the incident... but there are no living victims of slavery today

- Many whites here today are immigrants and never owned slaves in the U.S.

- Affirmative Action- some consider it to be a form of reparation

- I thought blacks are now on even ground with whites after the Civil Rights Act of 1965.

If the reparation were to happen, it must be assumed that the blacks need to terminate their American citizenship and repatriate back to their original African countries

The actual complicit guilty, who kidnapped, imprisoned and sold/owned African tribespeople for oppressed and hellish life as labor slaves.....are ALL DEAD.

You can't arrest DEAD people on ANY criminal charges relating to forced African tribespeople slave labor crimes, simply because they can't be summoned to appear in criminal and/or Civil Court to answer any arraignment charges.

It's unclear why organized BLACK RACIST groups existent in America today simply can't grasp this simple legal concept.

And as of 10 minutes ago, ALL the complicit GUILTY persons who kidnapped African slaves and shipped them illegally to America.....are STILL DEAD; I doubt any of them will awaken anytime soon.

The ONLY racist oppression American Blacks today face is IN THEIR OWN MINDSET ( veiled MENTAL ILLNESS(ES) ); THEY ARE their own worst enemy.

Historical fact: The JFK administration set off a proposed plan to launch a epic huge effort to send out thousands of Mental Health professionals into the Black community, to try and FREE them from those mental health illnesses.....and guess what??

The American Black Cacus of 1962 REJECTED JFK's kind-hearted gesture!!! They wanted "free money" stuffed into their mailboxes instead.

So the ever liberal JFK administration launched several "minority assistance" programs ( i.e. Welfare and Food Stamp Programs ); the closest things to "free money" American Blacks--to this day---get.

History defines how well those "minority assistance" programs REALLY work.

The thing is that it does not just affect Whites. The US Government  wants to give to black people money for so called Reparations for slavery more than 150 years ago. The logistics of a program like that is impossible for several reasons. And they want to pay it out of the current tax base. First and foremost, no one that was subjected to slavery is alive anymore. The current tax base is made up of people alive today, which include other nationalities and races that were not even here during slavery. So the obvious question is, "If My family did not come to the US until say 1900, Why are My taxes being given to descendants of people I wasn't even here to subjugate?"

Also, with technology being what is it today, and knowing how efficient the US Government is with disbursement of monies today, how is it even possible NOT to have some or even Many cheaters get their hands on some of that money? And for those that 'Might' be qualified, how do you make that determination? Remember that records were seldom kept of slaves during that period of time, as they weren't considered People, rather they were considered Property.

So while the issue may well make a good Political Promise, or a way to try and swing some blacks back to the Democratic platform, any thinking person can figure out that it would be impossible to implement.

I agree if you are a slave you should receive reperations. I agree if you have ever in your living life owned a slave you should pay them reperations Unfortunately all slave owners and slaves are long dead in the USA. I will not pay a penny of reparation nor will any person USA to you or any other race that thinks they deserve it.

many decent answers but  real issue here is why  do you  feel  any reparation is called for?  wars .slavery etc all occurred with our. ancestors  and if we start having to be responsible for  things they did we  need ot go back to what pint on history? invasion by romans ? vikings? rapes ?murders ? and as to slavery ..copied by 'whites ' was actually. running for centuries already by Arabs  etc  its impossible to turn clock back but we can acknowledge events and try and move forward with each other and get rid of chips on shoulders.  Even  suggestion that  white people ought to be rewarding ( reparations ) to blacks is  in fact  creating issues itself .A form of racism ?  one can only really penalise those  whom offend is and when we catch them! that includes modern day slavery ( still goes on) and offenders for rape. murder etc  sad that you feel oppressed but that is a social issue for your country and area that ought to be addressed. many countries shave taken huge steps to change things but it needs interaction and friendliness between  all races and  levels of society to have a level playing field .  many aspects even today causes conflict and see saw of  'justice and tolerance'  is never seemingly level. Here in Uk today for example we have  racial conflict and much of that is caused by lack if  interaction  and and communities self isolating form others rejection of its values etc  yet having own values enshrined for protection in law.   we see  female mutilation. and  child selection still going on  even in a so called modern society . caused by cultural differences and isolation of each  section of community not  willing or wanting to  alter way of life etc .  please get chip of shoulder a sit only creates  race issues an dis not helping us all to live.work and play with each other as we should!

It's simple.  They don't want to pay.  Even though the people directly involved are dead, a debt is owed.  Even though tremendous injustice followed the emancipation of slaves and continues today and all of that is clearly actionable, they don't want to pay. The Massacre of Black Wall St happened in the 1920s and the grandchildren of that are still living.  There is no statute of limitation for murder.  Not to mention the lack of prosecution of those perpetrators and cover-up of the crime by the government is continuing harm done to people on a daily basis.  The heirs of people to whom harm was done win lawsuits every day.  The argument that the victims are all dead is ridiculous.

Because no ex slaves are alive and no slavers are alive from that time period.

Also, why would you pay people something for something that you ancestors did.

Also, blacks are not opresses now. They actually have even more opportunities now than whites.
2020-04-28 18:46:00 UTC
Because I think that in it's crassest form it seems unappealing and wrong.

The crassest form of "reparations" (which was parodied in an episode of Chapelles Show years ago) involves just cutting a check to black people as sort of a guilt payment for slavery.  But there's problems with this, as opponents point out.  For one thing, no black person alive today was a slave (at least not a legal chattel slave).  For another, no white person alive today owned slaves, and many white people aren't even descended from slave owners.  Some of their ancestors didn't even come to this country until after slavery was ended.  So the idea of white people being, partially, on the hook for a direct cash payout to black people sounds wrong.  You also get into class isssues such as should wealthy black people like Jay-Z or Denzel Washington get such payouts.  The whole thing has some real ethical issues.

But most advocates don't see reparations that way.  Instead they see it as a set of programs meant to address and rectify the lingering negative impacts of slavery and racism.  Seen in that manner I think it makes a lot more sense.

Do food stamps work? Does free housing work? Free telephones? What about affirmative action? All around the world, no matter what the country or city, blacks for some reason fail miserably compared to the rest of the world. So if none of these worked, why would reparations?

Because so many whites never owned slaves and their families weren’t even citizens then. What they ought to do is go after the families that owned them (it can be easily ascertained) and are now billionaires because of it!  No one would give a damn about stopping that, white people would be cheering them on, then! That’d be making the people who unjustly profited, justly pay back reparations.

In a 2016 poll, 58 percent of African-Americans said they believed that the United States should pay financial reparations to African-Americans who are descendants of slaves. Only 15 percent of whites agreed.

I am a white woman and I support reparations to African-Americans. I have published academic articles on the issue, including: “Official Apologies.” I am the author of Reparations to Africa and a co-editor of The Age of Apology.

The apology is a second step.

Apologies

So many governments, institutions, and private businesses in the United States are implicated in slavery and post-1865 injustices that it would be impossible for them all to apologize at once. But a good start would be an apology for slavery by the president of the United States, joined by the governors of every state that ever permitted enslavement.

The text of the apology would have to be carefully negotiated with African-American community leaders.

Memorials

The next step would be to memorialize all these injustices. It is not enough to tear down monuments to leaders of the Confederate army. Memorials should be put up at public expense to African-Americans who fought against enslavement and later injustices.

Memorials should also be erected at sites of plantations, sites of protest and sites of known murders of African-Americans, from those who were lynched in decades past to those unjustly killed by police. These memorials are a way to assert that Black lives matter.

Financial reparations

Finally, there is the question of financial reparations and whether descendants of enslaved people should receive them. How, if at all, can all the descendants of enslaved African Americans be identified? Even if they can be identified, should they receive individual financial reparations?

Perhaps yes, to compensate for the huge gap in (mostly inherited) wealth between white and Black Americans. Perhaps African-Americans should be given a financial “boost” to help them on the road to moderate, middle-class security. But many white and other Americans might view this as unfair to other people who don’t enjoy such prosperity.

Alternately, perhaps the federal and state governments should pay group reparations to African Americans. Whites might be more willing to accept collective reparations of this kind.

One possibility is to invest in education, from shoring up predominantly African-American elementary schools to special university scholarships. One might argue that affirmative action programs have already accomplished this, but they have been weakened over the decades and, in any case, only apply at the university level.

Whites are already outnumbered decades ago and according to ILO (Int'l Literacy Org) they were also becoming illiterate. At the turn of the millennium, US was in top 27 and today they're in top 35 (or more). Even as minority group now, racism prevailed among them and so as hatred.

Slavery and heartache is not unique to any one group. My Irish ancestors were slaves for hundreds of years longer than the ancestors of Black Americans. The English also brought over Irish 'indentured servants' to the Americas against their will and kept them as servants indefinitely and in generational bondage. Call it what you want, that's still slavery. Where's my reparations?

If you open this can of worms you're going to have to pay everyone for every grievance of the past. As I said before, slavery and heartache is not unique to any one group. It's well-known that Native Americans would wipe each other out and the victors would take women and children as concubines and slaves. Should all those tribes pay reparations to each other?

Don't get me started on South Africa and how West African tribes wiped them all out. Oh, you didn't know that? Did you think it was the evil White man who did that after founding South Africa? No, Kiddo, that happened way after. I guess Black Africans need a DNA test and those who have West African blood should be legally required to pay reparations to those with Native South African blood.

Then there's the question of when reparations should stop being paid. Most people who favor reparations say it should never stop. Does that sound like a good plan to heal from something of the past and to move forward together? It will create animosity and hate like you have never seen in your lifetime.
2020-04-26 22:04:38 UTC
Because it would be stupid to pay reparations and also blacks have not deserved it, for contemporary blacks have never been the victims of slavery and also blacks sold other blacks to the white for lust of gold, weapons and power.

Rather the Chinese should pay reparations to the Tibetans and Uighur Muslims and the Russians should pay reparations for Chechnya, Georgians and the Ukrainians.

Because it is all bullshit.  This is just a way for these so called black s"leaders" to continue to keep their people down by telling them that they are not worthy and they are always the victims, blah blah, blah.   Other races have gone through similar shits and they picked themselves up and build their families and build their lives.   Stop blaming their own personal failings on something that happened years and years ago.

I am white and I fully support reparations. I think it is entirely reasonable that any living black American who can provide solid, incontrovertible proof that they personally were owned as a slave by any public or private entity of the Confederate States of America prior to the abolition of slavery in January 1865 should receive reparations in the sum of one million dollars per year spent in the condition of slavery.

I think most white people that are currently alive have never oppressed anyone of african descent. To oppress someone you would have to make conscious decisions that would cause tangible oppression like trying to get laws passed that limit the rights of a certain race or actively take part in violence or protests against a race. Since I've never met any white person that has ever spoken about wanting to do anything like that nor have I met a white person who has said negative things about black people in my whole life living in Kansas my guess is that most American of European descent with "white" skin pigments have just moved on and don't need to spend their limited currency on donations to people of another skin pigment?

Get with the times there's nothing we can do for anyone throughout thousands of years of human history that suffered unjustly are we supposed to have Italy build a gold statue in egypt and pay them reparations for Alexander the great pillaging and sacking Egypt and ending it's civilization? The answer is no...you're the only one holding on to the hate.

Im all for previous slave owners paying reparations to ex slaves.   That's fair

Your reparations come in the form of affirmative action..  A black man and a white man apply for the same job..  The black man will get hired first.

There are also college scholarships that are only avaiable to minorities.

You have equal..  If not more, chance to rise up.

My great-great-ever-so-great Grampa fought for the South. One of his sons, My great Grampa, fought for the North. One of my forebears was a pirate and a slaver. One of his brothers was killed by his slaves. (Probably deserved it)

Another ancestor fled slavery in Europe. Some were danmed grateful to be sharecroppers and have a borrowed mule. Another became a doctor for one reason: to bring medical arts to the less privileged people of South Africa. Another was a teacher in a literacy program. I spent years helping others climb the ladders of Affirmative Action and other programs, career ladders to which for other reasons I had no access. So ... who ya gonna take the money from ... and who ya gonna give it to?

Racist? No, people are people. And whether white or black, those who perpetuate any other creed should be tied to a tree and horsewhipped to within an inch of their sorry lives. And ANYbody who takes the fruit of another's labors by Government or by force should be blindfolded and walked overboard.

(Yeah, the pirates and slavers in the family became lawyers. Not a helluva lot of difference.)

I think that whites oppose reparations for blacks because they feel that in our present day, blacks are no longer under enslavement due to the abolishment of it over 100 years ago.  Basically, they feel like they paying reparations would be a waste because our ancestors were the ones affected and not us. This couldn't be any further from the truth, as a person of color myself I feel that there needs to not reparations in funding for the advancement of the black community. The black community has been oppressed and disadvantaged for many centuries in this country and there needs to be uplifting and supportive of our community.

We all have the same opportunities, it’s up to you to take those opportunities.... Why would white people’s tax money be given to black people for something that happened over 150 years ago lol That’s just ridiculous that you would even think that’s ok. Be honest, you want a free handout. There’s less shame in admiring that than there is in pretending you’re victimized...

Sub Saharan run/controlled nations like Jamaica & Haiti are receiving billions in foreign aide from USA & Britain just like how billions were either wasted or looted in deteriorating cities like Detroit, Baltimore, & many other (D) run cities for decades... The only thing Sub Saharan descent American's think about is reparation, more special privileges & entitlements. Abolition of Slavery & Liberia was reparation. Hundreds of millionaire sub Saharan athletes in Basketball, Football (Kaepernick), track... millionaire even billionaire rappers (JZ), shake down activists, sub Saharan film directors, talk show host (Oprah)… think only about reparation.

Professor Dyson have been demanding for a reparation law for over a decade. Dyson's demand is for non-sub Saharan babies to set up reparation account which is consent for Sub Saharan descent to bully non-sub Saharan. Prop. Dyson's claims that all people of European lineage inherited the legacy of Slavery. Despite Dyson's claims, what people of Europeans lineage inherited were the Magna Carta, Constitutional Law, Bill of Rights that started with the U.S. Constitutions for which Some Non European/Europeanized Sovereigns had adopted for them selves & led to the Abolition of Slavery. The Global Abolition of Slavery Started with European descent from the Late 1700s to the late 1800s. In the US it was the Quakers along with the Anabaptist that started the abolition movement that was achieved in 1864. Brazil, Cuba, & Others followed in 1890s. The Union states having won the war against the rebel states abolished slavery. Since the founding of the U.S.A half of the U.S. had been anti-slavery, but had to work with the slave state for independence, strength & protection from possible foreign threats abroad or across land borders. When the confederate secede all bets were off. Independence is the ultimate reparation as independence enables one or a sovereign determine & control its own destiny instead of homestead or land grants. Independence gives full control & use of the Sovereign's territory. Abolishing slavery & Liberia were reparation. All the entitlements that came after such as public schooling, welfare, section 8, & Affirmative Action... are additional reparation.

African Countries bares the responsibility for reparation in the form of a an independent sovereign territory the size of Puerto Rico or Hispaniola in Africa for Africans (Arab & Sub Saharan) stealing the territorial lands from those they sold to the middle East, N. Africa, India, Brazil, Caribbean, & the USA. Liberia (reparation for freed slave to determine their own destiny, make their own laws, trade, & management the land) & Haiti failed, but with the talented tenth in charge the New Land Sovereign territory can & will Rival Israel, Malta, Brunei. They can do it, but it will take all of Sub Saharan descent in the Americas sacrifice & hard work to make the Economy & Sovereign work. They can call it Wakanda, & with China's help it can look like Wakanda. If the Confederate states had won secession & the slaves victoriously rebelled, then the Confederate states would be obliged to give up power, territorial control, property & women to ravage like in Haiti's revolution.

If the US had not enacted the Chinese Exclusion Act & put 20+ million Chinese immigrants into Baltimore or better yet Puerto Rico, the Island might have become a City of the Future like Singapore, a much smaller Island. After Singapore's independence in 1965 from Malaysia, Singapore transformed from a tiny back water Island into a Metropolis in the 1990s. Now it is much more modern than the whole state of California. They did it without natural resources, investment & loans from the USA.

Japan's independence from the U.S. in 1952 had the same effect after 7 years of occupation. By 1990s Japan was pretty advance. Japan's greatness lies in their independence to pursue & determine their own fate as a nation of disciplined, self reliant, honest, accountable, responsible, & honor bound Nippon people. If Japan had never opted to become an independent Nation, Japanese Culture, Language & Identity may have become saturated like Hawaii opting to become a U.S. State leading to Hawaiians becoming a minority in their own territorial Islands though it allowed Hawaii to prosper to a developed advance status under U.S. protection & territorial sovereign, which was not the case with Philippines & Cuba opting to become independent.

Japan might have been reduced into entitled race baiting, & reparation/race hustlers, if Japan had not become independent. But Japan's Honor Code established during the shogun era conflict with the race bating/hustling mentality as Japanese culture is about taking responsibility, discipline, & punishing the corrupt & criminals amongst them in contrast to the cuddling & the encouraging support of entitled reparation/race hustlers. (Christ never marched demanding at the romans for special entitlements & privileges, yet race/hustlers professes belief in Christ).

Japan boldly challenging the USA in WWII, tested Japan's technological prowess that they would build upon for their advancement towards the future. Japan's written language, & system of measurements allowed for record keeping to gather acquired or created knowledge to preserve & pass on. U.S. investment & loans help speed up Japan's progress. Japan prove themselves honorable & responsible competing among technological economic powers on the planet.

Korea's Independence from Japan is similar in nature of Japan's independence with the US . Independence is Separation or Segregation for self determination through responsible self Governance that many 3rd World Nations & their public seems not to understand. Segregation of Homogenous territories or Nations does not mean that they cannot cooperate & trade to promote each nations interest in mutual agreements or allow a responsible (limited/vetted) immigration system. Both countries have been Capitalist before the industrial revolution though under Monarchism or a Militarize order (Shogun/Samurai). For Capitalism to prosper, it requires responsible, disciplined, honorable Majority (75%-90%, if not 100%) in Government & Homogenous public.

Yes, for hundreds of years of compounded financial profits made from the unpaid labor of slaves and from the underpaid labor from decades until the present. Include the Jim Crow effect on voting rights, minimal education opportunities, incarcerations and inmate farm labor.. and that debt should be paid with interest.

It's not Whites in general that don't support it but infact it is the government both federal and state that don't wish to handout money to African people ,it is not because you don't deserve it ,it is because the African race at large tends to commit more crimes on average and does not perform well in school and does not have a base level IQ that be a leading benefactor to one's attribution towards the multiple sectors of society such as civilian , business, and military.

Yes out of 1000 military personnel you have 110 blacks and 800 whites and the rest are Hispanic or a Asian who decided to join the military instead of going to college which is laughable .

It is that blacks are not the worth of the money that is put into their cities where most of that money will be spent on illegal means such buying stolen credit cards or stolen guns or drugs off the street . Or buying large amounts of coke to have mixed with baking soda and made crack.

If the prison system is mainly filled with blacks then that means the majority of reparations will have gone in the hands to criminals.

Maybe once black crime rate goes down blacks will get a free check but I foresee the reparations only being that no succeeding higher then $900 per person . I also forsee Native American Indians claiming to get some form of reparations thus making this burden even more chaotic and more a tax on us white folk ,this will only stangle the American tax payer and the budget of the federal reserve would become exhausted over times of use.

You blacks seem to want to bring everyone down with in this burning inflatable economy ,thus you are truly selfish as a the specie's you are.

There were Gypsy slaves in Turkey in the 1600's and 1700's ,does that now mean Turkey should pay all Gypsy people?. No !. And I bet Gypsy's in Turkey would rather simulate their Turkish counterpart and adapt to society in Turkey which unlike the scum Gypsy's in Romania that steal from people the Gypsy's in Turkey seem to be more self aware of the existence in Turkey they have conform to the rules and laws that they are identical to the Turks.

Despite recent attention to reconsider House Resolution 40, a bill that aims to establish a commission to study the subject, the most recent polls show an overwhelming majority of Americans, especially white Americans, still oppose reparations to African American descendants of enslaved people. But that number is decreasing.

An April 2019 survey of 1,000 likely voters by the Rasmussen Report found that 21 percent up from 17 percent in March 2018 think U.S. taxpayers should pay reparations to black Americans “who can prove they are descended from slaves.” Another 66 percent oppose reparations  down from 70 percent while 13 percent are undecided. Gallup is currently conducting its own survey on reparations, a spokesperson said.

The Rasmussen Report, as other polls have shown in recent years, highlights a sharp division based on race. The April 2019 survey showed that 60 percent of black Americans favor reparations, while only 12 percent of whites favor it. And 73 percent of whites, 32 percent of blacks, and 64 percent of other minority voters are opposed to it.

Stop your whining and be thankful you live in a free country . In a documentary , Obama's half brother in Kenya said when white people are forced out of an African country the country goes down hill into poverty . I have a scary thought for you . I don't think it will ever happen but terrible things have happened in history before . If the Chinese communists ever took over our country who would they like and what would they do with the people they don't like ? They are responsible for killing millions of their own people so nobody should be surprised to expect any different treatment if they decided to kill millions of us . The Chinese are smart but they are enslaved in that communist system which is like a cancer that wants to spread . They are working constantly to spread propaganda to help that spread to gain power and gain control . As a matter of fact they are using our freedom and working on computer sites to seed confusion and distrust of each other . It is a human thing to like or not particularly like people who are different but you must keep things in perspective and be kind and considerate and thoughtful of others .  Again , just be thankful for all the freedom and all the people who provide food , products and services for all of us . Don't walk around thinking others owe you . Appreciate your  individual freedom and be thankful for everything and you will be a happier person

Slavery hasn't always been just about white people owning black people.

Here in the United Kingdom  - approximately 130 years ago - my white Grandma (who was then only 5 and part of a poor family with 14 children) was sent to 'work' (they didn't call it 'being owned by' but that's what it was) in the home of a wealthy family.  Her mom was told she'd be well looked after.  The facts are that she was then their slave. She slept in a small cupboard under the main staircase, in her clothes because she was given no bedding.  She was paid in food, not money, and that food was the leftovers that the family didn't want. If she broke anything she was punished, she had no holidays when she could go home, was at the mercy of every member of the family and the other members of staff who all had a certain amount of authority over her.

If she had not gone away and done that work she, her siblings and her widowed mother, would have been sent to the workhouse. If you don't know what the workhouse was check it out on the internet.  U.K. has a nasty history of abusing people also - the only difference was that it was whites abusing whites here.  Young people here today would never believe the atrocities of the past if we told them but very few talk about them these days.

I think that life was dreadful for all but the white rich people back then and, possibly, in more parts of the world than we realise even now.
Ralph G
2020-04-27 15:25:11 UTC
The main reason white people don't like giving out reparations is that it's basically "free money," which might be used for stuff like street drugs and bling, and not something that would be more practical, like rent, food, college tuition, and medical bills. I don't mind a "hand up," but not a "hand out."

Like it says in the Bible, "Give a man a fish, feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, feed him for life."

How about a little thanks for a change to the families who lost fathers , brothers and sons who fought in the war to free them ? Such a thankless war .  Also , don't forget we invented all the balls you play with . The next time you are playing basketball , I want you to be thankful for the blond , blue eyed guy that invented it . I always said , if I was living in the jungle with headhunters and wild animals all around me , I would have cut in line to get on one of those Porchagees ships to come here for a better life . As a matter of fact sometimes I think I would like to back and live on a plantation and work in the daylight and spend the nights singing ,clapping and dancing around the plantation camp fires at night with my lovely wife and fourteen kids . Even rich white  people today can't afford to have that many kids .

Why should I give up my hard-earned money for something I wasn't a part of? Just because I'm white? Isn't it racist to judge individuals by their race like that? None of the entitled blacks demanding reparations today were ever slaves. They are owed absolutely nothing. I suggest they get jobs and actually earn their own money. They'll feel better. The only kind of reparations I would ever support would be giving some money towards a memorial wall for the actual past slaves. Other than that, nope. It doesn't make me racist to refuse to pay for something I wasn't a part of and to not go along with racists who want to judge me by my race to justify taking from me to support them.

Thanks to ancestry dot com I can prove none of my family was in the US during slave days. The Scottish side came through Canada in 1920 and the Irish side was in Canada until 1885. When they moved here they were shunned for being Catholic. Affirmative action was supposed to level that playing field.

Whites have never ever owned a slave :) the British did, so did the US and so did the ottomans and so have many other countries but not whites, there are plenty of ‘white’ countries that have never done slavery and many have been slaves to non whites or Muslims. In fact for well over 170 years they were brutalised and enslaved by a non white empire (ottomans) especially from 1526 to 1697.

There’s black peoples who lived in these empires and profited from slavery too. Did the Asians murder 10 million people? no the Japanese empire did from 1931 to 1945, did Africans enslave 1.2million white people no the Barbary pirates did, forgetting the millions the ottomans enslaved in their conquest of Europe. Did the Asians murder 40 million people? No Genghis Khan did. My point is that saying whites enslaved blacks is wrong, your being racist as many ‘white peoples never owned slaves and in fact we’re slaves themselves.

Also if you want reparations for historical transgressions then how far back should you go? Plus how would you prove who was a slave or not after over a hundred years.  Etc

Reparation is merely a short way of saying "gimme money 'cause I can't pull myself up out of poverty."  Is it my fault that you didn't pay attention in school?  No.  Is it my fault that you squandered your chance to get an education?  No.  Is it my fault that you don't want to do the work I had to do to get my degrees?  No.

I worked my way through school and had night jobs that left me in such a daze that my Sunday mornings were non-existent.  I crashed until 1:30 to 2:00 PM on Sunday to make up for sleep I wasn't getting during the week.  Money?  I lived at home with my parents until my mid-20s because I couldn't afford to live on my own.  Where is the "white privilege" in that situation?

This is something that I hear in discussions many times.  To lots of people, the word "reparations" is an excuse for being shiftless and lazy.  But I know that is based on false racial profiling.  So my comment to you is, why have previous efforts to uplift the black community failed?  Because we've thrown "Jump Start" money at schools and neighborhoods.  We've thrown "affirmative action" into colleges and job arenas.  And it STILL doesn't do any good.

I'm ready to cut our losses and end all of those programs.  The solution may well be to take you to the end of the pier, push you in, and then tell you to "sink or swim."  It might be the toughest lesson you would ever get.

Let me ask you this:  IF we said "Yes" to reparations, would you agree to NEVER EVER AGAIN play the race card?

because you are asking people who didn't do **** to you to pay you for **** you didn't acctually go through.

it would be differant if a black peron who did live through it was asking for them from a white person that actually did the crime and not their relitives,

not all of us a christains not all of us support punishing people who didnt actually do the crime like the children of the guilty,

are you against all black people paying money to every white person raped by a black person because they are white?

i'd assume yes right because you didn't rape them so why should you be punished for it

So what are the reparations for?  There's no-one alive in the USA who has ever been or owned a slave.  Many black Americans are not descended from slaves.  The vast majority of white Americans are not descended from anyone who has owned a slave.  The oppression currently suffered by some black Americans is because they prefer state handouts to working hard in order to improve their status.  Suggesting that one group of people should pay money to another group of people on the basis of their skin colour is the ultimate in racism.

The only one that can provide reparation or reconciliation to all mankind is Jesus Christ

From man's deviation from righteousness in the garden of Eden men kind has enslaved or dominated each other throughout the 6,000 years of human history.

This termination has brought pain and suffering as the book of Jeremiah mentioned to all mankind no matter what race they are.

When I'm creator chose the nation of Israel to be his chosen people because of his friendship with Abraham there for father he was giving them an opportunity to be free not enslaved to any other Nation at that time.

However they rejected that and became enslaved as a society along with the rest of humankind

Jesus Christ promise in Matthew chapter 24 that critical times will be part of the last days oppression of all kind will continue until he put it into it thereby giving reparations that is giving life to all those who choose to accept him as the payment but what we lost John 3:16 John 17:3 Revelations 21: 3 , 4

For me the issue is, it was legal at that point. NOTHING else matters. But I do believe it should only be paid to those that have ancestry to slaves that landed in the US. Just because someone is black, doesn't qualify for reparations intended to repay for OUR part in slavery. If they went to Haiti, or Jamaica first that's on them.

Because white people have been the scapegoat for black oppression long after slavery and the civil rights movement. Most white people living today weren't even born then, yet are blamed.

Also, the media likes to prolong this war by perpetuating racism to keep everyone apart. The media (which is run by Jews, not whites) signs black entertainers (rappers) who perform sexist, racist and hate lyrics, which cause people to view blacks as thugs and black people buy into this scam and model their lives from these negative teachings. If you are talking about financial reperations, money doesn't solve the problem of oppression, education does. No one bailed out other cultures when they first came to America and were forced to work **** jobs. They had to bail their own people out. There are already plenty of affirmative action programs and resources for blacks, but what is that gonna do to end racism and oppression? Is it going to allow more black people to hold high positions? Doubtful. Want to stop racism and oppression? Then stop giving the media power to stereotype and degrade your race.

They really do not seem to understand the circumstances or history of their own country at all.

I see a lot of the "well nobody who's alive today was a slave" argument here, but I have to question why that suddenly means there's no debt to be repaid. Like, sure, people alive today only descended from slaves, but do you really think many of their families were able to rise financially directly out of slavery when given nothing?

Is it really fine that so many black people today should struggle in the lower class because their grandparents were slaves and were never given any form of help when freed? It's not like they were suddenly able to go out and get good-paying jobs right off the bat.

Being a slave typically meant no experience with living in the world as your own person, and the country was still massively prejudiced against black people for a long time even after they were freed. It's not like everything was suddenly perfectly smooth sailing when freed.

You are the one being racist.  You are contending that a portion of the population should be financially liable for something those people have not done, simply based on their race.

I am white, but I have not oppressed people because of their race, nor other classes of people.  I have never owned slaves, nor promoted slavery.

Reparations should be paid by those who are guilty of wrongdoing.  I am not an oppressor, therefore, I owe no reparations for oppression.  It is quite racist to contend that I do simply because of my race.

What should a white person in the U.S. pay any kind of "reparation" to a black person. I never owned any slaves, and my parents or grandparents never owned any slaves. None of the black people presently living in the U.S. were ever slaves; and their parents and grandparents were never slaves either. If blacks today are "oppressed", they have every opportunity to lift themselves out of their "oppression" - it's not my job to "lift" them.

As a Tribal member of the Hunkpapa Sioux.

I will and can say this. The American Indian

is owed nothing. And we were what here first.

We choose our path. And even though it was

the wrong one with the white man. And even

though the Whiteman broke and decimated

more treaty's and promises to the red man.

It still boils down to we were not smart enough

to see the forest for one tree.

The black person you talk about. Were brought

here to work as slaves. Sold by their own

people. Largest slave seller in African history

the ZULU. Their leader Shaka Zulu was the

biggest seller of slaves during his time. Not

one American today was alive and has a direct

hand in the way the black was handled.

The Black community like us. Were pawns in

a game that we just never got a winning hand

dealt in. Only way to beat it. Education. Getting

smarter and learning to live in times of change.

For if you don't. You will never move ahead.

Because black people don't deserve reparations.  Not one black person in America today has ever been held as a slave by any white American.  I myself am a white American, and I've never owned any slaves, so I don't owe black people anything.  "Thou shalt not steal" (8th Commandment).

I believe that it is merely a factor of their pride. Some just do not want to see something they worked so hard for, fade. Knowing that they need people, and knowing that some of those people are wanting freedom their rule, is probably heartbreaking for some of them. I guess that is a possibility, though that is my theory.

I don't think cash reparations are feasible or fair, but I do think we, as a civil society interested and dependent on the economic mobility  of its citizens need to address th economic/academic disparity of American blacks /society as a whole.

While the root cause of that disparity includes the legacy of slavery, slavery itself is not the sole factor, but that's actually beside the point

1) Some black Africans helped and profited from the slave trade.  It's a mistake to  stereotype everyone who oppressed blacks as white.

2) Let's say your grandfather and mine went on a killing spree.  Are we responsible?  We would feel bad, of course, but we cannot be held responsible for what someone else did, even someone in our family.
2020-04-27 19:56:34 UTC
So much has changed since slavery that it's ridiculous. For instance White kid small family low income but stable household income has the same opportunity has a black family in the same scenario so why do whites owe anything?
2020-04-27 17:34:39 UTC
Being white, it is my selfish belief, that the true African-American is the only one who is owed any reparation.  And since they are long ago deceased, and none of my white relatives/ancestors were in the USA at the time, then I feel disconnected from this issue.

Furthermore, during the majority of my life, black people have been advantaged by the government and governmental programs.

So the present living black people have more than been compensated for their African ancestor.

If anything so ridiculous as reparations ever gets going, then I think that any interested recipients need to supply the name and place of birth of their expatriated very distant relative.

black victimology is tiresome. who are whites oppressing? you oppress yourself. are whites married to blacks oppressive? you want people to pay for being born white when they had no control over that? that's racism.

Blacks aren't oppressed anymore. Not since the end of segregation, but from what I have seen many of them choose to hold on to that mindset as an excuse for special treatment.

What have modern black people done to deserve reparation? And since they were not personally slaves, nor us modern white Americans slave owners, why should we be paying them for injustices that were done to their ancestors who are dead anyway, not to mention their owners?
2020-04-26 23:00:13 UTC
The idea of reparations is inherently racist. Why do I owe those people money just because I'm white?
2020-04-26 21:15:38 UTC
Why should people who were never slaves or knew any slaves be paid "reparations" by people who never enslaved anyone nor owned any slaves?  That's not a racist question, that's a common sense question to everybody except perhaps race baiting racists like yourself.

Their argument is their ancestors should have to pay, it shouldn't come out of the current living accounts, unless people that owned slaves are still alive. For Heaven's Sake.  First I have lived many years and I can tell you the African American has undergone many suppressions.  First, they couldn't vote.  They couldn't ride on the bus like everyone until Rosa Parks. Groups of idiot whites would chase them down and beat them and set them on fire.  Girls and women were raped and nothing was done about it because they were "Black".  They had to live in a certain side of town and it definitely wasn't the better side of the tracks.  If you worked with one, besides not being allowed to eat in the break room they were paid nearly half what you were paid.  They weren't allowed to enter Libraries because we all know they weren't smart enough to read.  REALLY?  The list goes on and on.  As far as the virus, because of the lack of good health care, many African American's have a variety of problems.  High Blood Pressure, Diabetes, Gout, weight problems, and this list goes on and on.  Covid picks on these individuals more than those who are not obese or have high blood pressure, heart problems.  So before you ask these questions try researching their history instead of listening to the coneheads.  And remember this if you didn't have the African Americans for these people to harass, they would be coming after all the other races.  Then when they are gone they would start after those with Brown eyes or brown hair.  Get the HINT!

Slavery was bad. But to make one race pay for the crimes of people of the same race that lived before them is straight up nuts. If that's a game we're gonna play, trust me, everyone would have to pay everybody to some extend.

Because based on who one's ancestors were or what happened to them, nobody owes reparations to anyone else.

If you disagree with that, put your money where your mouth is.  Literally.  Find out who your own ancestors wronged, locate their descendants and give them the reparations they believe you owe them.

Oh, and don't bother claiming that your ancestors never wronged anybody.  You go back far enough, you'll find some real s.o.b.s., guaranteed.

1. I'm Irish, my descendants were slaves.. 2.  We are all present slaves under the Federal Reserve.  3.  All peoples were slaves at one time or another, maybe Africa should've developed better and stronger to repel the smart and stronger white man...
2020-04-26 18:02:38 UTC
Because the concept of reparations is quite illogical. It's based on the assumption that all whites owe all blacks something which is not true. My family never owned slaves, and I don't appreciate being judged and stereotyped based on my race rather than on who I am as an individual. Blacks alive today weren't slaves, and whites alive today were never slave-owners. Therefore, blacks aren't entitled to reparations. And there's nothing to suggest that giving them reparations will uplift them; blacks already receive disproportionately more welfare aid than whites but are still disproportionately more likely to live in poverty. They also benefit from legal discrimination (affirmative action). I don't see how giving them even more free money is going to help them. Let's be honest: blacks are not oppressed; they're just looking for a handout and are using past slavery as an excuse to get it. There comes a point when people as individuals have to grow up and take responsibility for their own lives instead of expecting others to take care of them. I hope black people can reach this point in maturity.

I think the proposed settlement of giving every person who claims reparation 1 million Confederate dollars per person and sending them back to the country that they claim to come from is fair reparation
