BEIJING (Reuters Life!) - The world's fastest train hit its first speed bump in the form of a disobedient smoker less than a week after it began running in southern China.

A cigarette triggered an alarm that forced a two-and-a-half hour stoppage, nearly as long as the train takes to cover the 1,100 kilometer (684 mile) distance between Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong province, and the central city of Wuhan.

Managers of the bullet train, which debuted on Saturday, were unable to catch the smoker who fled the scene before the alarm sounded, the official Xinhua news agency reported on Wednesday.

"Smoking is strictly forbidden on the Wuhan-Guangzhou high-speed train, even in the toilet," a spokesman with the Guangzhou Railway Group Corporation was quoted as saying. "It could trigger the alarm and even cause equipment failures."

The train was in the Guangzhou rail station when it was delayed and had not yet begun its 350-km-per-hour journey, Xinhua added.

The laws oppress the people His actions are that of a free man living in a cage As such the other caged animals are upset by it

A medal I dont think so he deserves a fine not a medal. Have you thought of the disruption that this would have caused to all kinds of poeple? What about children the ill elderly and frail that were stuck on that train? What if the equipment had failed when the train was going at high speed it may have cost hundreds of lives? I really cant work out why he deserves a medal. I am a smoker myself and have smoked for years, but you have to uphold the law, I only smoke at home no where else, as I dont think its fair too subject people to this foul habit ( i do want to give up) If you want to smoke well I say do it in your own home.
peachy

Unfortunately for smokers in China, this little incident will probably negatively impact them in that all smokers will be seen as trouble-makers and a national restriction on smoking in public is just around the corner.

You obviously have no concept of the rule of law. This guy wasted hours of hundreds of peoples time because he was too selfish to wait the 2 hours for the train ride. If smoking means that much to him he should buy a car.
