Question:
Is the only way the Republicans can remain politically viable is for America to fall into a depression?

The way it stands now in the eyes of many people is that the economic downturn is the Republicans fault and if Obama passes his stimulus bill, and then the economy turns around, then Obama and the Democrats have saved America.
Please give intelligent answers on how the stimulus package might pass and Republicans will remain with broad political support IF the economy recovers. Or why you HONESTLY believe the Republicans can block legislation and the economy will recover without government interference.
Or give any other INTELLIGENT answer. Please have mercy and spare me any stupidity.

Its a lose lose situation for them. IF we go down even though we get the stim What did they offer as an option? " only much of the same that got us there" If we go up and they block it as much as possible they will also be on the losing side of History..

regardless of what happens my guess is that the GOP will split.

Christian Conservatives ( Palin) on one side

Fiscal Conservatives ( Romney) on the other.

I live in one of the reddest of red states and so many people did not vote because of Palin.

to start with the recession we are in now is not the fault of the republican party it is in fact do to the democrats that wear in office before george bush took office. if most of the general public stopped and really looked at the way things worked they would know that a presidents policies really do not take affect until 8 -10 years after they have been passed therefore the economic problems we are having are from the clinton administration and not the bush. furthermore the good economic times we had during the clinton years wear left from bush Senior and president Regan being in office.

As to the current presidents economic policies if you read them with any working knoll age on how thing really work you would know that one of two things are going to happen in the next year we will fall so far in to an economic crises that it may make the stock market crash of the 1920s look like it never hap pend or he will get real lucky and some of bushes policies will start a recovery that he will take credit for.

You said many people think the economy is the Republicans fault and to that I say many people are uninformed. The Economy is the fault of years worth of socialist policies by both parties. I think for the most part the Democrats have been the worst offenders but both parties have done their fair share of damage. I think if a party wants long term success they had better get back to the principles that the country was founded on. I see a citizen revolt in the very near future and I do not think either party is going to be spared from the backlash that of politicians have caused.

The reason Obama is insistent that there are Republicans that vote for the bill is so the Democrats don't own it. They can come back and say it was bi-partisan if it fails. Evidently, they aren't sure it will work or the Democrats would certainly all vote for it and maybe even do so without any Republican support so they can take credit for this great stimulus plan. Being the Democrats aren't doing that makes me nervous they have no idea if it will work and are thinking right now that it won't.

the economy is still in better shape than when Bush inheritied a recession from Clinton. The economy is no where near as bad as it was under carter. Liberals cause recessions by interfering with the economy. FDR prolonged the Great depression by 7-10 years.

No the Democrats are the ones betting on a depression. That way they can make the government the sole support of millions.

I highly doubt the stimulas can work, no matter which party does or use's it.

The problem is that it put's the whole country in further debt, and it can only possibly cause more financial and economic problems...Because where is the money to pay for the stimulus coming from?

Because with so many unemployed and can't pay taxes...The money ain't there to spend...Just another way by any party to put us further in debt...

Sadly the only real solution is to reduce taxes, and encourage busineses to grow and thrive...

Once people are shown how those who are not responsible for their own actions benefit from government programs (see the woman who just had 8 kids at once and can't support them on her own), those who are responsible for their own actions (more than 50% of the populace) will stand up and say "enough is enough" and stop the Socialistic policies that have been enacted for the last 80 years.

People are outraged over others like this woman, and when they finally figure out that it is the taxpayer (responsible people) who are supporting the looters (irresponsible people), that is when people will stand up and say NO.

What makes no sense is if ole plastic face pelosi and dingy harry and obama are so sure this will fix it with this 1 trillion, why then do they not want all the credit for when it fixes everything. Or is it you want to blame someone else like the typical way you libs do.

You do not need Republicans. Do it yourself if you are so sure.

"Please give intelligent answers on how the stimulus package might pass and Republicans will remain with broad political support IF the economy recovers."

If they help to pass the bill...and help with changes that don't include more things we have already tried, that have already failed.

Otherwise, yes....their sole goal is to have the economy collapse, causing a depression, just so they can regain power.

Here`s your boy pulling the wool over your eyes and you don`t even know it ! Thumbs down all you want ! These are the facts , and just because your radical liberal socialist bias` media doesn`t tell you about it , doesn`t make it untrue ! These are very easy facts to check if one is not to lazy , and not afraid of the truth ??

I think smart voters will vote for the people who help them. If the bill passes and the economy turns around, the Republicans who helped, and didn't just stand and b*tch will be voted back in.

I don't think it's all Republicans that are bad, just the Right Wing weirdos.

If politicians actually listened to the people who put them in office, the regular, everyday John and Jane Does out there, this stimulus bill would be thrown in the garbage and forgotten about. The people do not want this!

That is my honest opinion.

The stimulus bill is a massive disaster in the making. How are we going to pay back all of that money? It'll take 2000 years. You're deluded in thinking that it will ever be recovered without all of us losing our standard of living, and for many of us already hurting, imagine the worst cause its coming.

Its a tad premature for an abortion don't you think. No one knows who the father of the depression actually is?

It's not about governemnt. It's liberty, property rights, and free enterprise. Who cares what party is in power, as long as we can prosper without the government trying to tax us every time we move.

Our GOP has little chance anyway. The only demographic we won was Caucasian over 65. That demographic gets smaller every year as those people die. Instead of becoming a permanent majority our GOP has crashed and burned. We are a permanent minority. A regional party. Either way I do not believe our GOP will be politically viable in national elections for quite some time. As Republicans you know we would like to see another TARP bank bailout ripoff bill over rewarding the liberal middle and working classes who voted for Obama.

Obama is making Republicans more viable by the minute.

Obama's kickback bill is not designed for stimulus therefore, it is bound to fail.

If the economy rebounds thanks to government intervention, it recreate the perception of government in this country.

Republicans are against that, they WANT government...especially Democrats...to fail.
