Question:
I don't believe in Abortion, but I do in the Death Penalty, what is your opinion?

Here is what I think. Abortion is not right in my opinion and it has nothing to do with Religion. It is plain wrong, though sometimes it is justifiable speacially at times of rape and incest. In general I think abortion is wrong because no one has a way of predicting what kind of person the child will be. On the other hand criminals on death row already have shown what kind of persons they are and have committed hidieous crimes.

That's my opinion, what do you think and what is your opinion? And yes I would be what you consider a Liberal.

I'm fairly conservative, but I believe that both abortion and the death penalty are wrong. The reasons on the death penalty are:

1. I respect all human life, even if all humans don't respect me.

2. There is a great margin for error when humans are put on trial by other humans.

3. My faith (Christianity) tells me to love and forgive everyone, not just the good people; and tells me to pray especially hard for the people who hate me or would do wrong.

For more on facts (albeit from a one-sided website) about the death penatly, see the link to NoDeathPenalty.org below.

The reasons for my being against abortion are:

1. If even a criminal is innocent until proven guilty, I believe that an unborn child should be considered alive until proven otherwise.

2. No one can prove that an unborn child feels no pain when aborted.

3. You absolutely cannot prove that a viable unborn child is not alive. Quite the contrary. From the moment an egg is fertilized, amazing develpments occur. (see fetal development link in sources)

Although I also don't think it's responsible to make abortion illegal, I still am very much against it.

You posed a good question!

I am in favor of abortion and I am against death penalty. I don't believe in the institution of family. Though it does inculcates some good virtues like love, compassion and empathy but it has more vices than virtues. The biggest vices being possessiveness, greed, insecurity, group mentality (we vs. they). IMO the children are the property of the state (Utopia) which should bring them up in a more scientific and systematic manner. Until the time that this objective is realized people should have the right whether to have children or not.

I oppose death penalty in all cases, whatever hideous crimes they may have committed, except in the cases where the criminals are a threat to the society even from within the confines of a prison, i.e. when they can't be controlled. If they can be controlled and donot pose a threat to the society then let them live the natural term of their lives.

I believe in abortion and the death penalty. Abortion is justifiable in a lot of circumstances other than the ones you have mentioned. What if somebody already has a bunch of kids and can't afford more? Say she was using protection but was one of that 8% that it failed on? You may say adoption, but a mother would never be able to give her baby away for another to raise. So if she didn't abort it she would keep it and it would have a bad life and turn into someone that would end up getting the death penalty. As for that an eye for an eye. And like I said those unwanted babies are your future criminals

I agree that abortion is wrong . Its wrong for every reason even rape or incest--abortion will not take away the act of rape but it will surely compound the psychological pain of the victim something they will have to live with the rest of their lives. Now days with the sonogram you can see that the fetus is actually a baby and not just a lump of cells.I also agree on the death penalty. What I find hard to believe though,is how can someone believe abortion is OK but not the death penalty. Death for the Innocent but life for the guilty.

I don't believe abortion should be used as ordinary birth control, but I believe the people who are best able to weigh the pros and cons are the women in those situations - no government official should have jurisdiction to intervene in this choice.

If the anti-choice crowd was sincere, they'd put down the protest signs and work to promote viable options for women in tough situations, rather than just demonize them.

I'd be the first to oppose mandatory abortions imposed by anyone.

As far as the death penalty, if it could be applied fairly, I'd be more inclined to support it. The poor and minorities tend to get executed; no rich white corporate exec will ever get the chair, even if they deserve it the most. If you add together all the murders attributed to all those ever executed, you still don't touch Union Carbide's body count at Bhopal alone, let alone what GE, Monsantoand others have gotten away with.

interesting view,, may i propose another view?.. first abortion is wrong,, but many still view it as if it is being performed as a punishment to the unborn,, never have i heard of anyone say yeah if i get pregnant im gonna get an abortion teach that embryo to get in my womb yup, yup, incest or rape,, well rape maybe,,since it isnt consenual,, as for incest,, to each their own,, i feel taking the life of an unborn is evil, unless the child will be born with a medical condition that not allow the child to live a decent life,, as for death row and the penalty i have known at least two people innocent there are such things as frame ups,, not all that wear the badge are on the side of law,, until a more sure way to prove innocense or guilt death penalty such be with held

i myself do not believe in abortion, unless it will save the mothers life...and i do think they should have the morning after pill for women that has been raped...i do not believe we have the right to take anyones life...i know it does cost a lot to keep prisioners in prison...but if they would not put so many in prison for crimes that they did not commit...like being at the scene of a crime...we can not control anothers actions...but i think letting them rot in prison if they have been sentenced to death is far more punishment than death...people look at this so many different ways...i also believe though if someone is so dangerous he is dangerous even to the guards and anyone that comes in contact with them , then we are taking a chance on others lives...someone that bad may deserve to die...he is dangerous to society and does not have any reporse or care who he hurts...i know this is hard to understand...i am just glad i am not ever going to be a decision maker that would sentence someone to death....i got pregnant at 17 and my dad was a minister...but i could not have a abortion...i loved my child even though i had to move away from my dad...that was back when it was not a thing that happened very often...i did not want my dad to lose the respect he had...but i had no street smarts whatsoever....i hope you understand the way i feel on this subject...i do not think i could take a life to save my own...

Yes, I also think abortion is wrong, and that the Death Penalty is ok. All the time, people tell me that either way, a human life is lost. I try telling them that there is a difference between an innocent bay and a murderer. You think right on for being a liberal - just kidding. Good for you.

the death penalty is stupid... you can't murder a murderer... that's an extremely hypocritical thing to do.... you can't kill the killer because then you'd be a killer too......

as far as abortion goes, i don't agree with it....... if a woman is pregnant and she doesn't want the child, then she shouldn't kill it, she should've kept her legs closed, she should give the baby up for adoption.... at least then (even if she's not being a good mother to her child) the child will have a chance to live. if the woman (or girl) is raped, then still, that person should not kill the child in her womb...... she should hate the father, not the child....its not the child's fault that she was raped.... she should also give the baby up for adoption, because everyone has the right to live, even if the father is a rapist.....

that's my opinion.....great question though.....really thoughtful....

Abortion: i'm professional-existence. i do no longer think of you're able to abort the infant any way. this is incorrect. The election: i replaced into kinda hoping for Hilary Clinton, yet Obama seems to be doing a good activity. am i able to upload 3 greater you forgot to point? Circumcision: confident, this is fantastic. i do no longer see why some mothers could oppose it, different than religious motives. scientific marijuana: Yeah. HOnestly I dont care either way. Abortion if it's something you need or want to do I could care less, it doesn't hurt me. The death pentalty on the other hand may be a little excessive but letting someone rot in jail is just about the same so again who cares.

I'm a guy. I have no say in the abortion debate.

Death is a little too final given that attorneys, judges, and juries are not perfect. The first time it is proved an innocent person was put to death - all hell will break loose.

I do not believe in either. There is not much difference.

For the death penalty,

why do we kill people, who kill people, to show people that killing is wrong? Death is never the answer. never.

For abortion, that is just disgusting. When you have an abortion, you are murdering. And it's more than just murdering a person, you're murdering your child. If you have an abortion, you have no heart. There is no reason for it to be done. Rape or not, it's not the baby's fault. You can't just kill something that has done nothing wrong, because it's an inconveinence to you.

I absolutely agree with you. I was adopted out at birth and was adopted by a different family at 3 weeks old. I am glad I had a chance to live. I also adopted my daughter. Thankfully her nor I were aborted. I agree about the death penelty too. Why should the government pay to keep these offenders alive and give them full medical priveledges and steak and color T.V and all the luxuries at our expenses?

Abortion in my opinion is morally wrong for stupidity... but in times of rape, incest, things like that I agree with it... but you can't have your cake and eat it too.. it's either legal or illegal... and for those very reasons it legal..nothing you can do about the stupid people.

Death row.. I'd rather pay to have all of them electrocuted then pay to have them spend life in prison.. once all their appeals are out of the way and they definitely did it

You offer some good examples of when abortion is necessary.

I would say that abortion - at certain times in specific cases - is a necessary evil in our society.

On the other hand, I'd love to see tough laws handed down in regards to underage sex, for those who cannot afford to have a child or more than one and certainly a law that requires a parent license for people BEFORE they procreate.

Too many kids end up abused because people think its their right to have kids and treat them any way they want to.

I agree! Not abortion, but the death penalty for sure! I was asked by my family to get an abortion with my daughter who is now 3 and her father is serving 3 consecutive life sentences for killing 3 people and I wish we had capital punishment in my state. He was a horrible man who I think deserves to have people watch him die. But then again I am not God and will leave judgement to Him.

Abortion is a scourge upon society.

I don't believe in the death penalty either. It's better to let them rot in prison. Death penalty is the easy way out. Plus it cost millions in court costs. Not worth it.

thanks for posting a question on a difficult issue in a non-partisan/non-rabid way.

i think that there is barely a coherent and consistent philosophy of death out there. the two issues you mention are part of it, but add in euthanasia, the right to life, suicide and - pushing it a bit for some - vegetarianism, and i think very few people's opinions on "death" as a political issue would be consistent across the board.

one way to attempt consistency regarding humans would be to ALWAYS make it a personal choice. thus, no capital punishment but allow the guilty to commit suicide if they chose to (and many would).

I mostly agree

Abortion is wrong for many reasons.

- the child didnt do anything wrong

- rape accounts for less than 1% of all abortions and child birth

- killing innocent life is wrong on any level

Death penaly is still okay though in my opinion because someone has done very very major evils, i.e. murdering innocent life, and may continue to do it over and over again. Its for our protection

I hope you understand

EDIT: Dan S. a fetus is not part of a woman's body. And they do have control over it. The pill and a condom.

I support both, and I have one big question to ask you; "If a woman doesn't even have the right to control here own body, then what use are all the other rights of society to her?"

Abortion is cold-blooded murder, but a necessary one sometimes. We live in a flawed world and sometimes the best decision is a flawed one. I FAVOR ABORTION.

Ideally I would like to see the woman carry the child to term and give it up for adoption, but that takes a very strong woman to do that. The child becomes a part of them, it is not just a life in their belly, it is THEM. Giving up that child will probably be the hardest thing that they have every done, very few will be capable of it.

I hate child abuse, and I think its is one of the worst crimes that a person can commit. An unwanted child will have to suffer 16-18 years of abuse and it will warp them so much as to damage their entire life and the lives of those around them.

Now imagine what happens with an unwanted pregnancy. The woman is usually young in high school (The percentage of this among black people is alarming, and not just a rumor or product of racial prejudice). The mother will have to drop out of high school; when the pregnancy starts to show. Some schools offer a special class for pregnant women, but this is pretty rare. Regardless of what happens the woman will have to drop out when the child is born, and this will change the family’s life.

By far the most unwanted pregnancies are those where the father isn’t present, and refuses to help care for the child. Suing a person for child-support is expensive and takes a long time. If the father is in school, unemployed, in prison or otherwise poor then they can’t pay child support. So the woman and her family have to take up the burden. There are a few cases where the father and the father’s family will step forward, but 95% of the time they won’t; and raising a child is expensive. The child has to eat, and they grow out of their clothes quickly. They need a roof over their head and so much more, with all of that it will be double what it takes to support just the mother.

Since the woman doesn’t have a high school degree the only jobs she can get are those that only offer a minimum wage; they can’t even join the military. The child will have to be taken care of and that will be difficult and time consuming. Someone is going to have to meet those 4:00 a.m. feedings. Sometimes the woman’s family can help and we end up with grandparents raising their own grandchildren. Regardless of who helps it will take a lot time and money. The mother can’t go back to school until the child is old enough to take a bottle, and usually the baby has to be 12-18 months old (this is an optimistic figure). If the mother is strong she can try to go back to school, but even if she has a parent or grandparent to provide childcare it is still a difficult task, and the woman can only go to school part time. Many women don’t even try to return to school, which dooms them to a life of poverty.

They are poor, the woman’s life has been totally disrupted, and the mother can’t graduate with her class or go to her graduation ball. Teenage girls look forward to this event all throughout high school. This one night is supposed to be magical for them; instead it is filled with a baby crying. Is it any wonder that the mother soon starts to resent her baby? Parents normally can’t provide childcare, because they have their own lives and their own family to care for, so it falls to the grandparents. Some can do a good job, but a lot can’t. They won’t have high paying jobs, and probably live on a fixed income. All suffer some health problems and they will only get worse; very few grandparents will live to see their grandchild graduate high school. If they had proper health care and a better more relaxing environment then they could, but the child robs them of this. They are supposed to be retired and enjoying life, now they find themselves having to raise a baby all over again. Is it any wonder that many grandparents can develop a resentment for the child that has caused all their problems, or for their granddaughter who did such a stupid thing and saddled them with such responsibility.

A very small percentage of mothers will be able to graduate high school and even start college, but only an extremely small percentage of those mothers will graduate. Most will be doomed to a life of poverty and forced to live in it.

The child is resented and raised in an environment where they are not wanted. Even if the grandparents and the mother are there the child can’t help but wonder what happened to his daddy. They will grow up poor and miss out on many advantages of life. If they are smart or need help then they won’t get the extra training they need. Under these burdens they will grow up like a tree bent by a great weight.

Since the mother is poor and won’t be working with college graduates (she may serve some of them though). The kind of friends she will have will be just as poor. Her old friends have moved on to a different world and she will have lost them. It has been said, and rightly so, that you are who your friends are. You and your friends are a reflection of your life. She isn’t going to meet a top of the line mate and she is very lonely so she will often end up with a sub par husband. This just increases the chance that the child will be abused, and this life long abuse is very damaging—this is the childhood that almost all serial murders experience.

The child will be resentful, full of hate, and angry. They will not do well in school and will probably drop out early. A few might make it through high school, but most won’t. With nowhere else to turn they join gangs and become criminals. If they were abused even a little then they to will be abusers. This only increases their chance to commit violent crimes. People like this end up in only two places, either a grave or prison. Prison just breeds more crime. If the person hasn’t suffered some sort of abuse before, they will now. Even the regulated life of a prison is hard, the cells are small, and you will never be alone. Then there are the criminals, which have the wolf personality—pick on anyone who appears weaker.

Is it worth putting someone through all of this, is if fair? What about the cost to society? What would you be willing to do to stop the creation of a murderer or a serial killer? Some people have risen beyond all these problems, but these are the extraordinary people, and even these people will have a very tough time and will be behind the curve.

For the mother it is almost just as bad. Her life has been ruined as well as her child’s and the result of this on her will be like a tree growing up under a huge weight. The Cinderella story were such a woman is picked up by a rich handsome man is very, very rare; mainly because all these Cinderellas will almost never see their Prince Charming.

I think that in a case like this abortion is the better solution. I don’t like it, and I don’t shrink from the word murder, but sometimes murder is the only option. It is a cruel world we live in.

Anti-abortionists say killing is a crime, but sometimes it is the only resort, that’s why we have the death penalty. John Wayne Gacy will never kill anyone again, but if he were ever released, or escaped, it would only be a matter of time before he became a serial murderer again. Anti-abortionists say that if you kill one child then you could lose an Einstein. For every possible Einstein though 3 –4 possible serial killers will also be born, a few dozen murders, and a few hundred other criminals. The only Einsteins that can come out of that upraising are the ones that are able to forge a decent life for themselves. They could have done so much better if they were just given a decent chance. You won’t get a truly Einstein caliber person out of an unwanted birth except once in a million years, because any possible Einstein are just those that are able to make a successful life for themselves.

Abortion is murder, and I would like to see anything done to prevent it, EXCEPT forcing an unwanted child into the world. The penalty for doing that out weighs the crime of murder. I support abortion and all that brings from condoms to the morning after pill, even late term abortions. The consequences of not supporting them are just too great.
