Why would the US and others want to see Islamists and Al Quida linked groups in control in Syria?

Because that is what will happen if Assad is deposed. Which is the lesser of two evils, a secular dictatorship or an Islamist dictatorship?

"The Free Syrian Army has little or no proper military structure. In terms of being an effective fighting force, it has been overtaken by foreign jihadists and the al-Qaeda affiliate Jabhat al-Nusra: in fact there is a civil war within a civil war between secularists and Islamists, with the latter now holding the whip hand"........."Meanwhile the New York Times recently reported that nowhere in rebel-held territory is there a secular fighting force to speak of. Instead Sharia courts are dotted throughout. All of which underlines the reality that there are no moderate groups capable of filling the power vacuum in the event of the collapse of the regime. So is the West facilitating regime change only to see Islamists in power in Damascus?" http://www.irishtimes.com/news/world/middle-east/a-bombing-campaign-against-syria-could-have-incalculable-consequences-1.1507321

The lesser of two evils in regards to the safety of the rest of the world is undoubtedly the secular dictatorship.

It's a shame that Islamist governments are * so * bad, that we're actually forced to compare them to the brutal dictatorships they are attempting to overthrow.

They don't...and the civil war is being hijacked by those groups. Assad is basically going to lose....the people don't want him....propping a dictator doesn't help us.

Making sure the non extremist groups get the good weapons....so when things are done with Assad...they have the superior fire power.....helps make sure the original rebels take control instead of foreign groups.

If you have an actual understanding of shariah...you won't be scared of the word. Its only in economically impoverished areas without a government where you see the crazy version of " shariah"....

That's the problem.

We are not considering military action to help the rebels, we are doing it to make sure Al-Assad knows he can't get away with gassing his own people

Because Obama is telling them to.
