Question:
The world hates America but?
2007-06-03 12:10:15 UTC
nothing stops them from absorbing the American culture.
Starbucks, Walmart, Home Depot, Coca Cola, Pepsi, Microsoft, iBM, Gateway, McDonalds, KFC, Nike, should I go on?
They watch our movies, sports, and tv shows, listen to our music, shop at our stores, use American technology, yet they hate America.

Could someone explain to me why this is true? They'll come on Yahoo, an American website or MySpace, another american website, to brag about how bad America is.
Why?

Many people in the world hate America for what its government does. People love our products and they can also make the distinction between the government policies and the average American.

One can also observe that there is a difference between disagreeing with an American and hating that American.

When discussing or thinking about an issue that involves millions of Americans and billions of non Americans, customs, attitudes, ideas, the past as well as the present, one should exercise huge discretion and care, less one would be considered intellectually careless.

Them vs US...hmmm...I think most of the posts that are questioning America that I'VE read are from Americans. It is those of us who have grown up in the United States who feel as if we have lost something. And it's not something that you can find at Wal-Mart, Coca-Cola, Home Depot, Starbucks, etc.

I am a veteran and I love the people of this country. And the people of all countries. Do you think that people are inherently bad because they grow up in countries that are oppressive or evil?

I have been all over the globe and I can tell you that most of the people who inhabit this planet have commonalities: they desire food and shelter, a safe harbor for their children, and the freedom to live as they choose. We used to believe in that, but somewhere along the way, people have used paranoia and irresponsible religiosity to promote their views and perpetuate the very things that we are against: terrorism, militarism, and totalitarianism.

I don't care about American corporations or anybody else's either. What is happening to America is happening to its soul, not its wallet.

It is not that peoples think you are bad, it is because they feel that as the world leader, you are going the wrong way... It is a little bit like most Americans that love their country but can't figure out why their government is doing such mistakes all over. So most foreigner think that the US is going on the wrong path, and want to wake-up some of its citizens. As foreigners they see the other side of the medal, that most American can't see, so they feel that their opinion worth mentioning...

Because politics and religion are very intertwined. The USA is a dissenting (meaning people who did not adhere to the government's chosen religion in the Old Country) Protestant country. To the extent that it is not a Protestant country, it is a heavily Jewish one. So far as the USA is Catholic, Catholicism is so heavily fractured in terms of different countries from which the people came, that Catholicism in the USA has little of the nature of a government religion. Remember, Catholicism is the government religion of Ireland, according to the Irish Constitution. The Pope governed large areas of Italy before Italian unification. Before the French Revolution, the Catholic Church was the government religion and that evil man - Robespierre - tried to bring a government religion in France made out of whole cloth. Before the Bolsheviks, the Russian Orthodox Church was the government religion. In England, today, the Queen on the recommendation of the Prime Minister appoints the Archbishop of Canterbury, the head of the Church of England.

In the result, people appreciate the fruits of America's culture, but remember that the Church of England, the Catholic Church in Spain (and a lot of other countries), the Lutheran Church in Germany under Bismarck was supported by State persecution, and the Russian Orthodox Church all persecuted Protestants and Jews at various stages over the last 400 years. Jews got back into England only because the King was executed and the leader of the English Republic - Oliver Cromwell - let Jews into England.

Dissentlng Protestants have historically supported freedom of religion, freedom of enterprise, freedom to produce, freedom of speech and limited government much more than other folk.

These countries are therefore opposed to everything that America stands for. That their peoples may be atheists makes little difference, because hating dissenting Protestants and their culture does not depend on whether one believes in Jesus Christ or not, it depends on certain views as to the nature of government and whether one man (a ruler) should think for everyone or people should think for themselves.

There is still much religious persecution in the world. Even in Sweden, there is great difficulty in building Protestant churches, in Russia, there are prohibitions on Protestant missionaries, and in Muslim world, people are killed for converting from Islam.

The people that Americans get on with are people whose culture is basically Anglo-Saxon, because although they are not dissenting Protestants, they have much in common with American culture.

The world hates George Bush and Dick Cheney, not the American culture. Remember the train bombing in Spain, and the attacks in England. Those would have never happened if Bush wouldn't have conned us into going to war. The fact is terrorism worldwide is up seven times since we attacked Iraq. The US was nowhere near as unpopular before Bush. I can't wait until he's gone so the world can love America again.

You have to make a distinction between American POLITICS and American POPULAR CULTURE. American pop culture is one of our biggest exports. Many nations the world over absorb it and love it.

That doesn't mean that they like our politics. They don't like the way our government uses (or misuses) its power. We pour billions of dollars and thousands of lives into securing our oil supply, but ignore the hundreds of thousands of starving people in Darfur.

We are the richest nation on earth. And we use those riches for all the wrong things.

Probably because most people don't "love it or hate it." Most people see things in shades of gray, not black and white. And I doubt most of them WANT to have all of those multinational corporations in their town, those companies are the ones who go out and put up shop to try to make a profit in new markets before a competitor does.

Many other people also view the fact that American culture is filtering into their own as a threat to their way of life, and is just another factor in creating resentment to us for many of those.

I don't think all the world hates America. I rather tend to think they dislike our foreign policy (e.g. Iraq). Regardless, consumption of American goods will continue. After recently traveling to Europe, I found no hostility at all because I am American.

Lol they hate your imperialistic attitude towards the world. They want you to be our friends not our militaristic fathers. You are forgetting that during the Clinton era America was one of the most loved nations on earth but some disease seems to have got hold of the US since then and a lot of people are not wanting to catch it.

This is not a clear cut 'hate America' thing.

You need to look deeper into the reasons they 'feel' they hate us.

If you live in a third world country and you need aid...the US is there...and at first it is great....but as the handouts continue...you begin to look at the US as if they do the things to help you not out of the goodness of their collective hearts...but as Pity.

And no-one...and I mean no-one...wants to feel like someone's helping out of pity. It starts to feel like you can't do anything yourself...and no-one has any confidence that you can. They start to feel like the US is the big brother and you can't live your entire life with someone watching over you all the time.

I think you have absorbed too much of the liberal presses spouting against America and this not so good President. The world does not hate us, I have been to many foreign countries and what I am asked about most is what is it like to live in America and can I help them get here.

Envy and jealousy are main reason the rest of the world hates us.But hate is a strong word I would say it is more like the resent us for being so powerful in almost every aspect of Life.We have a strong army ,Stable Government,Technology and have very few down sides to our Government. Its not that they hate us they wish they were us.In a sense you answered your own question they have all our industries ,goods ,fashion, music. So in a way we are their Idol and they wish they would of thought of the things we have industrially and politically wise first.

The world doesn't hate America. They have disdain for what our government has done lately. But not all of America. I never had problems with anyone when I travelled abroad.
2007-06-03 12:22:11 UTC
They like our "stuff" but not necessarily our values. Besides, more and more of the technology you;re talking about is being produced in Asia.
2007-06-03 12:14:10 UTC
American cultural imperialism is exactly the reason why. In essence you answered your own question.

I don't think USA is necessarily hated, they just don't respect us anymore as we have power but never use it. Our politics force us to fight wars with hands tied behind our backs. Our media and entertainment industry is lampoonable too (may I submit Paris Hilton for your consideration).

America behaves responsibly...with responsibility comes power.

Without power comes resentment.

If others behaved responsibly they wouldn't resent

everybody hates us until we come over to THEIR own little country and help them out. (which we always do) just saying.

They should love it and brag on it. If they dislike America that much, I am sure they are free to relocate. Yes, amazes me too, such hypocrites.

It's called a love-hate relationship. Like drug addicts, they can't get enough of our stuff, but then they feel degraded and dirty afterwards, and try to kick.
