No, that is his real hair. And he is, apparently, very proud of it. In the 2004 election, there were a couple of instances where this came out. At one point, he jokingly indicated that everyone should vote for him and Edwards over Bush and Cheney because "we have better hair." On another occasion, it was reported that he had his "stylist" flown to Pittsburgh, at a cost of $1,000, to "do" his hair prior to a speech.

I have noticed that the part in Kerry's hair does not go to the depth of his hair as, say George Will's hair. Some of it just may be extra hair.

He wore a wig before he wore it, but then he changed it for a wig I think. But I never voted for a wig.

He wore them to bed before he threw them away. Now he wears his Heinz pickle pins to bed. He doesn't worry about getting stuck with one of the pins at night, because if he does then he can justify putting himself in for another medal.

I don't think the top of the hair is real because it doesn't show a true part on the top of his head.
