California would get a seat on the G-8 as the 8th largest economy in the world.

Texas would get third world status and be able to wrangle special deals from the World Bank.

Both have advantages but I suppose California would win in the end. Why? A far, far better educated population. (the reason Apple and Samsung picked California over Texas earlier this year)

California now has a budget surplus. Shocking but true.

@Reasoning:

I don't know if the author of your copy-n-paste thinks he's reporting an unusual event in California but you certainly think he is. Truth is, the ebb and flow of businesses and individuals in California is nothing new. In the '90s we lost enough companies to Atlanta and surrounding areas to put them on the business map. In the '80s it was Arizona. One thing will never change. The weather is great and smart people want to live here. That's why we beat Texas for the new Apple facility and the new Samsung facility. Both companies stated that even though taxes were higher here, they required the vastly superior talent pool.

Texas...easily. Why? OIL revenues. It has the manpower to defend itself and a lot of heavy weapon systems.

California? Not a chance. Why? Too dependant on federal money. Very few heavy weapon systems for defense.

River,

Sorry, but you had it reversed. Texas isn't bankrupt...California IS.

As a life long resident of Ca., over six decades, I have watched the Liberals run this state into the ground. The large employers have left the state. Ca. spends between 10 and 15 billion a year just on welfare benefits to illegal aliens. We have gone from the third largest economy in the world to the eight. The Democrat Legislature sent a contingent to Az. and Nv. to try to talk the large employers back into the state. They laughed at them. Ca. has the reputation of being the highest business as well as personal tax in the nation. It is also known as the most business unfriendly state in the Union. Jerry Brown just signed a Bill to allow illegal aliens to obtain Ca. Drivers License which also allows them to register to vote. 58,000 Califorinans have lost their health insurance coverage due to Obamacare. It was supposed to be more affordable and you could keep your plan and Doctor. Just a side comment I see more people from the left on this site confusing Health Insurance with Health Care. They are not one and the same. Obamacare increases the cost and diminishes the care. Why are people so stupid as not to see it is an additional power grab of one third of our economy and freedom. Back to Ca. Charles Manson is still alive because of Gov. "Moonbeam" Brown. He appointed Rose Byrd as Chief Justice of the Ca. Supreme Court last time he was Governor. She communted all death sentences to life which took Manson off death row. The State School Board has approved a book titled "The Absolute Diary of a Part Time Indian" for Freshman school kids. My Freshman grand daughter brought it home and complained because it uses the "n" word as proof the Indians "F"ed Buffalo. The author describes his experiences at masterbation. This is what the Democrats approve for 13 and 14 year old students to read. This state has become a dung pile.

At California's height; it could rival other nations; and by itself would have been 7th in the world. Texas' origins started as an independent nation. However; many of its citizens depend upon government assistance from welfare, medical to section 8 for housing; due to the low wages introduced by the local businesses. As such, California still is on the cutting edge and excels Texas.

All of them would be fine if Federal government wouldn't get involved. But right now Texas could leave the Union and give Obama the finger as they do it

I vote Texas - even though I've lived there! I so despise that state that I'll donate to a fund to cut the dang place free and shove it out into the Gulf of Mexico!

Texas is going broke while California is able to pay down its debt so clearly California is in a better place. All of the jobs are not minimum wage in California too.

Texas

It is diverse enough in both population and resources.

It has enough wealth, industry.and agriculture that it could operate as an independent nation

Published: March 2, 2012 Updated: Aug. 21, 2013 . Report : 254 companies left California in 2011..Calif. lost most jobs, and firms in recession , 69 more companies move jobs, facilities out of California

2010 total: 204 companies leave California

By JAN NORMAN / THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

In 2011, 254 California companies moved some or all of their work and jobs out of state, 26% more than in 2010, according to Irvine business consultant Joe Vranich who has been tracking these departures since 2009.

Twenty-eight of these companies were in Orange County. Seven of them moved or expanded to Texas, three to Mexico, two to Washington and one each to 16 other states, said Vranich, who has changed the name of his business from The Relocation Coach to Spectrum Location Solutions, which helps companies define their goals, find new locations and coordinate the move.

254 companies moved all or partly out of California in 2011, according to Joe Vranich, Irvine consultant who has tracked this movement since 2009.

The pace is accelerating, Vranich said. An average of 4.9 businesses left California each week of 2011, compared to 3.9 per week (202 total) in 2010 and one a week (51 total) in 2009.

In what he calls "disinvestment events," Vranich counts companies that move jobs, facilities or headquarters out of California and "in carefully selected instances, companies making major capital investments in plants elsewhere that in the past would have been built in California," Vranich said.

He doesn't count companies that invest outside the state for growth or marketing reasons.

In this latest report, Vranich does not include a list of departing companies by name.

"Hassles arise when it becomes known that a company is going to move and politicians call to try to persuade them to change their mind. That includes calls from Gov. Brown's office," Vranich said. "In effect, I've added fuel to a fire that had started to simmer down. I don't want to make life more difficult for other people in business so I'm no longer naming the companies."

But based on news reports, here is a sampling of companies that moved partly or completely out of California in 2011:

Some are well known: Dunn-Edwards Paints in Vernon; and eBay Inc. in San Jose which will add 1,000 high-paying jobs in Austin, Texas, after receiving government incentives to locate there. The new owner of Claim Jumper and Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. restaurants moved the headquarters for both chains to Houston. Hyundai Capital America in Irvine transferred 71 jobs to Georgia and Texas.

In addition, Rockwell Collins in Irvine moved its electromechanical systems work to Mexico and Florida. Tickets.com in Costa Mesa closed its Concord office and moved the call center and customer service work to Texas. Wells Fargo Bank moved 59 jobs from Orange County to India.

Here are some of the Orange County departures in 2011:

Legacy Electronics to South Dakota

EDM Laboratories to Texas

Ossur Americas moved knee-brace manufacturing from Foothill Ranch to Mexico, laying off 109 people in Orange County

MVM Technologies moved from San Clemente to Washington D.C. The company was also wooed by economic development staffs in Oregon, Texas and Ohio.

Kairak closed its Fullerton plant and moved the work to Fort Worth, Texas.

LeMaitre Vascular Inc., based in Massachusetts, closed its Laguna Hills factoryAccentCare, a home healthcare provider, moved its corporate headquarters from Irvine to Dallas.

For all California departures, the top destinations were Texas, Arizona, Colorado, Nevada and a tie for Utah and Florida, Vranich said.
