Question:
Why do cons think that "voter suppression" is the same as "voter ID"?

It can include voter ID but is not limited to that. Freed of federal election supervision by the Supreme Court, the North Carolina legislature passed a bill that combines every idea for suppressing voter turnout that Republicans have advanced in other states. Rick Hasen, an election-law expert at the University of California, Irvine, called it “the most sweeping anti-voter law in at least decades.”

The law requires a government-issued photo ID card to vote, but doesn’t allow student IDs, public-employee IDs, or photo IDs issued by public assistance agencies. It shortens the early voting window, bans same-day registration during early voting and prohibits paid voter registration drives. Counties will not be able to extend voting hours in cases of long lines, or allow provisional voting if someone arrives at the wrong precinct. Poll “observers” are encouraged to challenge people who show up to vote, and are given new powers to do so.

NONE OF THIS HAS ANYTHING TO DO WITH VOTER FRAUD. Out of 7 million ballots cast in the state in 2012, there were 121 allegations of voter fraud, a rate of .00174 percent. Republicans aren’t even claiming the measure will reduce fraud — only that it will provide reassurance to those who worry about it. It “would make nearly three-fourths of the population more comfortable and more confident when they go to the polls,” House Speaker Thom Tillis explained to NBC News.

I couldn't have said it better. The actions in NC and other states are proof that there is more voter fraud taking place in the state legislatures than in the voting booths.

character is needed for one to be embarrassed so do not assume Obama voters to sense the edge of what they have executed. we've all seen the video of ways better than a million/2 of them had no clue as to who controlled Congress, etc. and that they are so intoxicated via their very own lack of know-how that they gained't know they are being battered till some factor plenty later. ...then they are going to blame it on every physique yet Obama and a Democrat Congress. purely something human beings sense battered.

Because it costs money and time to get a government-issued photo ID card, which is something a homeless or financially struggling person may have difficulty getting or may not be able to get at all.

(1) Government-issued ID--you realize this is Driver's License or State ID which the vast majority of people already have. Student ID, Public Employee ID's and Public Assistance IDs should not be valid. Student ID does not have the security behind it, the Public IDs can/should only be attained if you have a Driver's License or State ID in the first place!

(2) Early Voting window--the longer it is, the easier for fraud. Limit it, you make things a bit more secure.

(3) Ban Same day registration--does not allow for the right people to confirm that applications are valid before someone casts a vote. This is wise.

(4) I actually agree with you on the extending voting hours based on turnout. That one is good and should stay.

(5) I disagree with provisional voting as precincts rarely change and if you show up at the wrong place, that's on you for not being prepared with the correct knowledge.

(6) Don't know about the "new" powers, but considering what we have seen in recent elections, I can get behind the observers concept on a trial basis.

Much of what is in here already exists in many liberal areas as well...but of course that is not being reported.

Think of all the places you need to provide proof of residency and identity. It is inexcusable that it is not more secure in the voting polls.

Oh, noes! People are actually going to have to prove their identity at the polls! And they're going to have to use a government ID? Oh, snap! That means they might have to have a driver's license or state-issued ID card that everyone has access to. Early voting? What happened to the idea that voting was your civic duty, and that you should make time to do it on election day? Never mind that employers are required by law to give you time to vote. And it's not like the lazy slugs that vote at their convenience can't use an absentee ballot. Provisional votes are a crock, too. It's your responsibility to know where you need to show up. This isn't voter suppression. This is not catering to the lowest common denominator, and making people take responsibility for their own participation.

None of which is onerous and none of which targets anyone based on anything other than their ability to get off their a$$ and vote. Where is the 'only blacks' or 'only rich' condition in any of this? Doesn't exist. These measures don't affect anyone or any group more than any other. So, where, exactly is the suppression and where exactly is the prejudice? There is none.

And why is 'voting' the only right you support?

1. Nobody knows how much voter fraud there is if they are not all caught.

2. Early voting, same day registration are not needed and are highly susceptible to fraud. 3-4 weeks of voting is moronic. We are not Afghanistan and people aren't riding goats across mountain ranges.

I live in NC I have read the law, and nowhere in there is anything to suggest that poll workers are encouraged to "challenge" voters

It is about prevention of fraud. Fox News estimated that in 2012, there was 15% of the vote was fraudulent. That is enough to swing an election. None of the measures taken will stop those who want to vote. None.

You liberals are the ones to call the requirement for an ID to vote voter suppression. I think we should require anyone who shows up to the polling station to show some sort of identification with a picture.

I read all of that waiting to see where the voter suppression comes into play. I don't see it. Same rules apply to everyone, the ID's are free, if one does what they need to do there won't be any issues. The health care mandate also requires ID's, what is the difference?

easy-get a ID, they are FREE in all states. dah.

Need an ID to vote, buy beer, buy cigarettes, to get into a bar. You need an ID to get a library card. You need an ID to rent an apartment. If someone can't get an ID they're stupid and shouldn't vote.

Its bad enough we have so many idiots voting in these liberaltards who are destroying our freedoms!

Don't buy into the left wing myths that use events like this to maximise political gain.
