first of all get real and know your facts. Hillary clinton will be 70+ if she takes office, Bernie Sanders is about 74. This is not enough age difference to matter.

Secondly The real reason so many votrers of all ages are flocking to Bernie Sanders is because he is honest and hillary is not.

Third, bernie Sanders is really a poor candidate, but when he shares the stage and gets compared to Hillay, he shines like a new diamond. It isn't because Bernie is so good, It's because hillary is so bad she makes him look good.

Because he isn't a cold B, like Hillary. We haven't had him shoved down our throat as the next Democratic Candidate for 8 years. Also:

Sanders became involved in the Civil Rights Movement during his university days. He was a member of the Congress of Racial Equality, also known as CORE. With CORE, Sanders participated in a sit-in against the segregation of off-campus housing in 1962. He also served as an organizer for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee

Bernie has been in the ****, fighting for equality of all, not just financial equality. Every Con is afraid of a socialist utopia he will create. They will fight him every step of the way and nothing will get done. They'll hold that over his head and he won't get re-elected. But we will have had 12 years to solidify the changes made by Obama and given them a real test run to see if they are viable changes.

Bernie Sanders is giving the youth of America what they want; Teens want to afford housing, to live a good life and at the current rate of things, even getting their own apartment seems like a far-fetched dream. Now the question is, what is Clinton offering the young adults of America - and what difference does she and Sanders have that make them flock more to Bernie?

Age, gender, etc etc should not matter in political events such as this - what should matter is what they are offering and whether they are good or bad. Honestly, if you had never heard or seen these candidates all but there choices and how they would make the country better, you would pick the best choice, however seeing and knowing the person affects that choice.

Stop judging people for who they are, but what they stand for, in this case

Hillary's gender is irrelevant. Bernie would be our first Jewish president, but I also don't care about that, because it is also silly and irrelevant.

Young people like Bernie Sanders because he is honest, consistent, and incredibly experienced. He stands up for what he believes in, even if it hurts him financially.

He is genuinely concerned for this country, and young people are seeing that. Hillary is disingenuous.

I am a millenial and I strongly disagree with and oppose Bernie Sanders. I don't really understand why my peers support Sanders. I don't doubt his sincerity but I don't think Bernie has a good understanding of how economics works. We have a national debt of $19 trillion dollars and spending more is not the answer to America's long term issues. At a time when pressure from foreign economic competition is straining US domestic companies due to globalization, we simply cannot afford more. Now, I admit that it's certainly a noble thing to stand up against special interests and stand up for the middle class but his proposed solutions are economically and politically unfeasible, especially since we live in a global economy. I'm not sure if Bernie Sanders is aware of the potential political obstacles of his plans and potential unforeseen or unattended consequences. They're way too idealistic and any political scientist will tell you that he will face a lot of resistance and problems implementing his solutions. No policy in history has been implemented to the way the president envisioned. A lot of things had to be compromised in order to get things passed through Congress. Good luck fighting Congress to pass your agenda. Not only that, but you also have to fight Congress for budget appropriations.

Bernie Sanders appears to be more driven by progressive ideology than pragmatism, per his "record" or "consistency", but I see that as a serious vulnerability. Nobody can get everything their way. In my opinion, we need someone who will negotiate with both parties. Negotiation process will require compromise. GOP or Democrat, doesn't matter. We also have a widening polarization of Congress, but to be fair, I don't think anyone has a solution to this.

In essence, I do praise Bernie Sanders for his social views and concern for the future but I think it's far more important to realize that we live in the real world, not a utopian fantasy.

Young people are idealists. Bernie Sanders has great ideals. The ideas as he explains them are a real pleasure to listen to. He has a lot of experience in explaining his ideas and he knows how to do it convincingly.

But, having heard last night’s debate, he doesn’t think about the immense expenditures his ideals would cost the taxpayers. He doesn’t think that he has to persuade the U. S. Senate of his ideals, especially a Senate with a majority of Republicans. And he doesn’t think of the danger of losing the benefits we have gained from the Obama Administration much less the risks to Medicare and Medicaid. All of this is OK with our young idealists. They are young and healthy and pay very little tax. They have never had a reason to think about such things.

Hillary has not only thought of all these things; she has had experience, long experience with the important issues and knows the importance of specific policies and the importance of not losing what we have gained by pursuing a vision of change and forgetting what is happening here and now. That’s why we need Hillary Clinton as President.

Finally, we need to remember that our young idealists had a lot of energy and ask a lot of good questions that add to our national dialogue. And, having done that, they don’t bother to come out on election day. That is why we now have a Republican Congress.

Just look at post election polls if you don’t believe me. Better yet, look at what I see. I’m an election clerk. Senior Citizens come out and vote. And as you watch you seen them moving slowly, some using canes or walkers or even wheel chairs. They have to work at it. And they do and they vote. Young idealists just don’t vote.

Really?! If you actually listen to his words then you'll know why. Even if Hillary is to be the first female president, feminists are more on Bernie's side. And the polls also indicate that women are backing Bernie more than Hillary.

Well, I have to admit, the coherence, clarity and gravitas of your message of support for HR Clinton would make pretty much anyone leaning left want to run out and vote for Sanders.

There is an old saying:

He who is not a socialist at 20 has no heart.

He who is a socialist at 40 has no head.

I believe this explains why young people like Bernie Sanders.

He is on their developmental level politically.

I disagree. Bernie is 7 years older than Hillary. She uses Botox. He is natural. He is a decent man, not a con artist. Why is a woman better, one who really doesnt understand world politics, one who is right of center. A woman is OK but not for the U.S. The U.S. projects world domination and you cant do that with a female head in many places. Why is Hillary better for young people? You didnt say. Bernie has plans to help young college students and families with health care and ending that outstanding student loan debt that affects your future. Hillary has not spelled out any plan to help anyone. I will tell you that because she is a woman, does not mean she really cares about women.

You are obviously too young to remember the scandals of Bill and Hillary dating back to Arkansas and in the 1990s in the White House. They were shady business deals they were involved in. When they left the WH Hillary said they were broke. And they stole the silver and china. Hillary is worth $30 mill and Bill $80 mill now.

Bernie does not represent the rich, thats the big difference, that goes beyond womens issues and minority issues. He has the moral compass to work on solutions that dont involve making money for their friends.

There are a lot of really excellent answers here. Kind of unusual for Yahoo, but these answers really are good. Please read them.

I won't go over the same points as already raised. But let me cover a few other aspects.

First, young people have been quite willing to support and vote for older people when the time and the message have been right. In the comments above, RICH3 makes the point about Winston Churchill. I remember the 1968 Presidential primaries and how popular Eugene McCarthy was among the young people.

https://youtu.be/p2HiJ9J0jFA

And 4 years ago, Ron Paul was appealing to young people.

https://youtu.be/E5TeneSysiw

With young people, it's not so much about age or even "electability" (though Sanders is electable), but it's about policies and positions.

Another point. You say: "Hillary Clinton a woman is a better choice for young people since we never had a woman president before." Begin a woman isn't a better choice just because the U.S. hasn't had a woman president yet. Some day, it will. And hopefully she'll be not only well qualified (which Hillary is), but also ethical with a vision of where to take the country. And the argument that the U.S. should elected some type of person who hasn't been President before doesn't work. We've never had an Hispanic President before. There are TWO Hispanics (Cruz and Rubio) running as Republicans. Take your choice if you want to break new ground. We've never had a really, really wealthy person elected. Not on the order of Trump. We've never elected a physician. Then vote for Carson. We've never elected a Jewish President. Or a Socialist President. That's Sanders.

On the other hand, we have elected people with experience who've had serious ethical challenges. Richard Nixon, for example. Or Warren G. Harding. I don't want to add Hillary Clinton to that list.

Bernie Sanders has been advocating for racial equality, women's rights, LGBTQ+, etc since his university years while Hillary only decided to in the recent years when it became "trendy". Age and gender don't matter for being president. We agree with what he believes. And he'll be 75 if he is president, and 79 at the end of the term. And anyway, we still have 2 living former presidents in their 90s (Jimmy Carter and George H.W. Bush).

And if gender and age do matter to some people, then what about Jill Stein? She also has similar opinions, and would be the first female president, and is younger than Hillary Clinton. And unlike Clinton, who only has had lots of opinions *cough* gay marriage *cough* for a couple years, Jill Stein and Bernie Sanders have been for those for a long time.

I am 18 and Bernie sanders appeals to me.I think he is too old to do it for the money I think he wants to be president to help out the small person I think he is trying to have a cradle to the grave kind of system where everyone is looked after which is good.i like his policy for universal health care. I think he would be great campaigning for minorities as well.he was a student during the civil rights movement.he also talked about policies to help young minorities away from prisons and into the education system.voting for Hilary because she is a woman is just stupid america will have a woman president but now is not the time. We need a woman president who is capable for the job Hilary is not for the people she is only doing this to prove a point that she can be president and to benefit the donors and other rich donors she tries too hard she even tried to fake a southern accent to relate to the common people! She is fake at relating to the common people she has celebrities advertising for her to get to the young people I don't think any of her polices are good Bernie is honest and he hasn't said a bad word against Hilary while she said Bernie is unfit to be president and had her husband call him sexist when he is not. I like Bernie because he is himself he didn't change anything to get people to like him. I mean if everyone voted for Hilary because she is a woman then why not vote for ted cruz and Marco Rubio? We never had Hispanic presidents before this logic is ridiculous to me I will have lost all respect for Americans if they don't see Bernie as the only hope for a better future

Not sure how young people could look at this guy & say this is me except with a lot more wrinkles and an egghead with hair on the sides. Sanders would be the oldest president and self admitted senile old white socialist elected or Clinton would be the 1st old privileged deceitful white woman elected who gives herself a full pardon of her own crimes. I feel sorry the democrats have such lousy choices. No black candidate this time to guilt trip white voters to vote for them. Their really lacking in diversified candidates. So of course they have to choose the lesser of 2 evils. Clinton is trying to Out-Socialist Sanders. Not much difference between the 2 except Bernie is more honest about his extremism. Promising Free Stuff works for lazy people who want something for nothing. Even though it's not really free. Gotta come from somewhere & those it comes from will pack up & leave & take their business elsewhere. His ideas won't come to fruition unless he does it illegally like Obama does.

It's astonishing how much ignorance there is in this country! It literally surprises me how stupid and uneducated people are, with this being said! Appearance doesn't matter when it comes to policies, Hillary is a lying ***** whose had an easy life. Bernie actually wants to make a change and I definitely have a lot of respect for Bernie, he has so much to offer for out society. Too bad an ignorant person like you will never understand, I honestly think a person that's considered "mentally ill" is more educated than you. I swear you're full on retarded at a whole new level!

This is the first election in which I'm voting and I hope Bernie makes it the primaries! I really want a woman president, however I don't want it to be Hilary Clinton. She's not truly a progressive, and claims to be "for women" yet I don't see her mentioning WOC or trans women. Bernie Sanders has been advocating for racial equality, women's rights, LGBTQ+, etc since his university years while Hillary only decided to in the recent years when it became "trendy". I don't trust her. However, I'd take her over those republican clowns anyday.. Especially Trump. Bernie Sanders is the best candidate for women.

First, you can't claim that a candidate would be a "bad" president because of their age. If Bernie was 106 and had tons of health issues, then no, it might not be the best idea to elect him. But he is only in his 70's, and has better health than most people his age.

Second, he appeals to millennials because he portrays the overall message that everybody should be able to live their life how they please, as long as it doesn't negatively effect anybody else. If a woman wants an abortion, he believes that it is her choice. If somebody wants to smoke weed, he believes it is their choice. If somebody wants to go to college for 8 years and get a good degree, he believes they should be able to choose to do so. He believes in everybody reforming America, so that America is a place that works for EVERYONE.

Thirdly, you CANNOT, I repeat CANNOT, vote for a candidate based on their demographics. Hillary was born a woman, but that does not entitle her to be president over somebody else**. Just because she is a woman, doesn't mean that she would be the best president to work for and create change regarding gender equality. Bernie has better policies and beliefs about gender equality that she does, which proves that you can't vote for somebody based on what they were born as.

**This statement is not intended to sound sexist, and being female, I respect Clinton but do not believe that she is what America needs in this day and age.

So to rest my case, Bernie Sanders is a far better qualified candidate based on his beliefs and consistency in his claims. Hillary would be better than ANY Republican, but when it comes down to her and Bernie, President Sanders wins.

Both Bernie and Hillary are terrible. Younger people like Bernie because "free college", "raise minimum wage", and all the other stuff he wants to give for free. But then people like Hillary because "she's a female". Well if Bernie wins, I can't wait to see all these magic trees growing money for all the things he wants to do for free. The idiot is gonna put us in worse debt. And I'm a 16 year old Female, and Hillary plays the "female card" too much. She's a feminist and we do NOT need that. This country was founded by men - "Founding Fathers" not "Founding Mothers". Its always been Mr. President and First Lady... Not First Gentleman. Besides who wants someone who lies about EVERYTHING? She's a sneak, she'll keep ruining this country just as Obama did.

Young people support Bernie Sanders because he is for the legalization of cannabis, which will be used whether it's legal or not, so I say give it a shot. As long as they add the warning label, I say we choose what we put into our bodies. However, young adults involved in the politics side might just support his ideas for the country. Either way, young people are going to form our nation in years to come and their opinions are relevant. I'm full Hillary, however I respect other people's opinions in the matter!

Bernie is the safe choice. No, none of his socialist idea's will EVER be considered by Congress (the house will still be controlled by the GOP after all). And he's malleable... unlike Clinton. Bernie will do what's best for the people - not for the corporations or the 1%. He has a solid track record for being fair, regardless of which isle he sides for at the time. Bernie is an independent...always has been, always will be.

I would vote for Bernie Sanders because he not bought by corporations. Plus new face candidate then original old usual democratic candidate s like Hillary and Bernie is also honest which rare in politics. Hillary Clinton bought by the Corporation and has to answer to their agendas. She not really common people s choice but rich insurance company's and corporations choice and elite s choice. Only thing Hillary Clinton has make people seem Sexist if don't vote for a woman . Like obama your racist don't vote for first African American president. So that why the elite try choose Hillary Clinton or Obama for candidates. Because don't vote for them that automatically makes you know what. That why most Americans are tired of elite and corporation agendas deciding are political candidates.

Bernie is only 74yo & Hillary (as well as Trump) are both 69 or 70. Barely an age gap between them. Also, you should be voting on candidates views & not their looks. I'm voting for Bernie because of what he stands for & wants to change, etc. it's probably also the reasons he resonates with some younger people. You shouldn't worry about why someone else is voting the way they are & research each candidate in detail, yourself. Then you can make the decision on which candidate best resonates with you.

Because their uneducated and Believe his nonsense about giving the country away for free.

But your just as uneducated for thinking Hillary is better because "never had a woman president before" What does that have to do with ANYTHING? In every political position she has held, there has been a scandal behind it! She got those people killed in Benghazi, then lied about it. The Clinton foundation has been investigated many times now for the shady crap and payoffs that go on. Now she's violated Federal Law with her illegal email server which the FBI is still investigating. She has committed Federal Felonies! THAT'S who you think should be our next president? REALLY?

Sanders is an idiot, but at least he's not a criminal that's gotten Americans killed due to his ignorance and then lied about it!

Because he tosses the word "FREE" around like the United States has unlimited money resources! Well, "free" isn't always FREE! There have already been people who have figured out that if Sanders should win and try to accomplish all the free giveaways he's pushing, like free college, free medical care, $15 per hours minimum wages, etc., the middle class will be hit with new taxes as well as the wealthy people. It was stated that the middle class would diminish even further because their yearly income would go downward by anywhere from 6% to 8% to help pay for all of these freebies! And I'd bet that the real figure would be closer to 10% reduction in your annual wages. So, if you make an average of $25,000 yearly, take away another $2,500 on top of what you normally would have paid in taxes for the year. Socialism at it's best! :(

Okay, it looks like you are assuming that the younger population is more liberal and therefore would vote for Hilary because we've never had a female president before and want to "break the glass ceiling" for women. You are correct in that sense but we're not going to elect Hilary based solely on the fact that she is a woman. The point of feminism and liberalism is to make sure everyone has equal opportunities. A lot of people think Sanders would make a better president than Hilary, and he does stand for liberalism. When a female presidential candidate that is a better choice than the rest comes along, hopefully America will vote for her, and that candidate will break that glass ceiling. These assumptions muddle the point of feminism and liberalism. We just want equal opportunities, that's all--we don't need special privilege because of the oppression we go through.

It's not about age, it is about policy and ideology. Sanders reflect the ideas and policy the younger generation represents on the liberal/democrat side. I lived in Madison, WI during the 2007-2008 primary campaign season, and remember mobs of young adults in support Ron Paul (father of libertarian-republican candidate, Sen. Rand Paul) of marching down the street connecting the capital to the UW campus. Both, Sanders and Paul represent the marginal wings of their respective parties, which typically appeals to the youth vote, who are usually somewhat aware of what is going on in politics, only during an election year.

The more mainstream and establishment figures in the parties are usually familiar to more engaged voters who are older, with the exception of one or two highly notable politicians, generally, everyone knows. Younger voters likely view the ideas and policies of the "big guns" as representing "authority," and who their parents might vote for, and therefore, "old". Sen. Sanders is "new" to the younger voters, while they grew up knowing Hilary Clinton. From their view, former Secretary Clinton doesn't appear to give them what they want. It has nothing to do with whether she's a woman. Sanders offers many of the things the youth vote wants. Why vote for someone who doesn't stand for what you particularly want? At least, you can't say Bernie Sander supporters are superficial in their decision.

The same reason people want to believe Trump. Some people will want to here only what they want to hear. Most of Bernie fans are college students who largely think they shouldn't have to pay for college. Thus come along a person like Sander who says he won't make them pay their college debts.

Young people are being robbed by benefit paychecks to older citizens. I am old. As a beneficiary of this legal vote buying scheme, I am ashamed. You should be angry. Really don't think any fair minded person would say that their Social Security benefits are excessive vs. their actual contribution. Consider the number of people adjudicated "disabled" for Social Security purposes. I am voting Bernie because he is basically the only candidate who has a real understanding of the pain of the young. They are smart and capable; but, unemployed or underemployed.

People of any age should vote for the candidate they think will most benefit the people of this country; ALL the people, not just a few. Pick the candidate who you believe will make this country a better place to live. Things have gotten so bad, in this country, that we need a candidate who aspires to make BIG improvements; one who aims high. In my opinion, none of the republican candidates would make our country better. And I believe that Clinton, while she would make some good changes, does not truly BELIEVE that it is possible to make the BIG improvements that our nation needs and deserves. Sanders honestly believes it can be done, and has the best interests of ALL the people at heart. That's why he'll get my vote.

Lmfao praying that this is a joke. It seems like one but I've read some more idiotic crap than this. You don't vote for someone because they are a woman. You vote for someone because of their politics. If you really wanted a woman you could vote for Carly Fiorina.
Daria
2016-02-12 19:13:50 UTC
While it would make history to have a woman president, I don't think Hillary qualifies and anyone who thinks she should be president just because she's female is totally brain-dead. Also from a previous article I've read, 91% off women and today's youth rather vote for someone who has actual plans for the state than their gender. That's like picking a hot person who has no brains or feelings over a regular person who does have a working mind and cares about you.

Well, to start with our version of winner take all capitalism has failed to benefit most of America, so now many are starting to think that living in a working Democracy where the citizens aren't politically disenfranchised sounds like a better idea than continuing on the path we're currently heading down.

If the age card is all you've got, you're apparently going to have to get back to the drawing board if you're trying to convince any but your intellectual clones....

Liking an old man is not a problem at all. We as youth are going to be old one day like him. The reason we young people like him is because he has a better plan for Social Security and Medicare and other retirement issue so that when we get old in the future, one of these days we will have a bright future like he does.

Sanders is NOT Clinton! With no whiff of scandal

Sanders is NOT wealthy like her! His backers are NOT DEAD wealthy dodgy regimes! Corporations wanting payback! No one gives Clinton tons of $ cos she' "pretty".

He wants to invest into infrastructure, education access for young people. Stop tax dodging companies making use of corporate welfare! The same said corporations don't invest into their own country, into their own workforce! It is a race to the bottom!

Clinton is a war champion! Her handy work Libya, & Syria!

"Pentagon spends about $600 billion a year, while the State Department’s total budget of around $50 billion is less than what the Pentagon spends just on “Overseas Contingency Operations” What do the US masses have to show for that?

Clinton has been in power for centuries! Technically decades!

And other then becoming wealthy, what exactly has she done?

Zilch!

War! War! War!

Wall st. Yeah! Yeah! yeah!

She has presided over the DECIMATION of the middle classes!

OK! For her! She is wealthy! Whining not! Maybe not as wealthy as her billionaire donors! But wealthy, nonetheless!!!!!!

Represents who? Not the middle classess!

High time wall street had to work for a living!

So she has the misfortune to be a woman! Too bad! Needing Albright' endorsement is scraping the war barrel!!!

They made their bed!

Whilst trillions ARE wasted on war, war, war, allowing war profiteering, the country is going down the toilet! Corruption! Pentagon can't account for $8.5 million! Why? Accountability! Where?

Hard to forget her hubby dearest unleashed wall street! 2008 greedy incompetent bankers should have been HELD to account!!! Not bailed out, so million bonuses could be paid out TO them! By those who were NOT WILLFULLY RECKLESS!!!!

Clinton sees no reason to REIN in wall st!!!!!

Since she gets paid millions, surprise! Surprise!!

Dragging her daughter, to trumpeter the Clinton name! Pah!!!!!!!

Never mind, what her husband did! Encircle NATO around Russia!!!!!

Reagan gave his word to Gorbachev, if Germany could unite in peace, after the fall of the Berlin wall, NATO would NOT encircle Russia!

Her whining Putin is Hitler is pathetic! Hitler was defeated by Putin's father!

Six reasons. Affordable HEALTH INSURANCE. Affordable college tuition. Decent old age pensions. All problems dealt with on the basis of science and reason. Choice for women and leaving gay friends and relatives alone. Bernie was there when times were better for working class people... strong unions, low cost HEALTH INSURANCE, affordable college. He was there when Social Security wasn't political and before there was Medicare. He saw women die from illegal abortions, segregation and jailor gay indviduals...all the good and the bad. Decent people in both parties fought for a 'better deal' for minorities, women, gays and the 95% of us that work for hourly wages.

The GOP/Tea/Fox/Koch/Jesus party wants to destroy all the good laws and replace them with bad laws. Bernie is a fighter for the good. The 'other party' says 'it can't be done'.... hat kind of BS is that for Americans?

Interesting to me is that the best the Democrats can come up with for candidates is two OLD WHITE PEOPLE who are fighting over who can give away the most to people who produce nothing. And yet TWO HISPANICS, ONE FEMALE, AND A BLACK MAN who are candidates in the opposition party aren't even looked at by most millennials and who can't think beyond what someone will "give" them. If the government can give it, they can take it away. And if social and economic Utopia exists anywhere on this planet, why aren't people flooding to and dying to get there like they do to the United States?

Young people mostly likely do not understand that a hopeful President Sanders has to bow to Congress to get things done. Obama s failures were all attributable to a non-cooperative, avidly partisan Congress.
2016-02-14 10:32:00 UTC
Because he is the prophet ... he is the one standing up and calling out the wrong-doers and telling them they need to change.

And we LIKE hearing that.

Unfortunately, he is not skilled-enough as a politician to be an effective President, and his health will not carry him through term if he was elected.

As much as I dislike Clinton, she has the experience, the networking skills, and the ability to play the party line .. which is what a leader needs.

But no one should vote for Hilary Clinton just because she is a female. That is a STUPID reason to vote for someone. That kind of thinking would have put Palin in office, and what a mistake THAT would have been.

It has nothing to do with age, but rather place in life.

They are poor, and saddling themselves with unnecessary loans.

The youth want to live like children, where someone takes care of them. They aren't starting families and contributing, so socialism is attractive.

When they get real jobs, and realize the truth, it may be too late. I think Sanders is evil.

> we never had a woman president before

Trust me, I'm German: We never had a woman chancellor before Angela Merkel.

The problem is, if she gets reelected, she can rule indefinitely, because we don't have the American rule of two 4-year periods here. Chancellor Helmut Kohl ruled for 16 years.

(The chancellor in Germany is the chief of government, while the federal president is rather for representative tasks. He legally has the right to overthrow laws he finds unconstitutional, but rarely a president has ever done that.)
