Question:
If all people making less than $17.00 an hour disappeared for 2 weeks, how would it affect your life?

Don't forget the parking lot attendant, the office cleaner, the cashier at CVS/Walgreen/RiteAid, the gas station worker, the lady at the dry cleaning counter, the security guard, the street sweeper, the starbucks person, the groundskeeper, the garbage man, etc., etc.

And now the mincing of words and attempts at insults ( communists, socialist, etc) begins.

Actually we have run factories by management through strikes. Stores would remain open. Cops and police would be there.

However in the long term it would be just like a dramatic raise in the minimum wage. It would be greatly inflationary and no one would want to work for $17 an hour.

I don't use a parking lot. I can empty my own trash if needed. I don't shop at CVS/Walgreen/RiteAid. I pay for gas with a debit card at the pump. It's a man at the dry cleaner that I use once a month. I suppose I'd start ironning my own shirts. Don't frequent establishments with security guards. Never see street sweepers. Go to startbucks once or twice a year. Groundskeepers at work are contracted. No garbage man would be bothersome, the dump stinks.

Were you affected by a "Day without a Mexican?" I wasn't.

I rarely deal with a parking lot attendant.

I'll dump my own trash, if it helps.

I could use self-checkout if they had it

I cannot tell you the last time I interacted with a gas station attendant.

City street sweepers do just fine, as do the garbage collectors.

I mow my own lawn. I fertilize it, too.

I don't go to Starbucks and rarely get any other fast food.

I'd probably have to do a few more things. Not sure what, but I am sure they would pop up. I'd roll with it and do what I had to do.

No mincing of words. Not commie or socialist silliness.

@Bil - That "Malibu Democrats" comment was dead on. Well done!

I guarantee you the trash collectors make at least that much. The supermarket checkers probably also make more than that.

No Burger King or Del Taco for two weeks.

I do my own groundskeeping, I don't drink coffee or dry clean clothes, and I pay at the pump with my debit card, so I would probably not notice much other than that.

Garbage men and street sweepers are paid by local government where I live and get paid good money. As for the gas station I use a card for gas and for the rest I'd get by just fine. If these people get paid this amount I will have to learn to live without them cause I won't be able to afford their services or products.

Yeah huge affect on my life.........that is why I do not want to raise the min. wage.

Because raising the min. wage is the biggest entry level job killer there is, hurting the people that need a job the most.

Look at Australlia with the highest min. wage and the highest youth unemployment over 27% of first time job seekers cannot find employment.

http://www.businessspectator.com.au/news/2013/7/4/economy/australian-youth-unemployment-spikes-report

Now when you cannot even get your foot in the employment door, you are more likely to live a life of poverty.

When you support min.wage you are supporting the outsourcing of American jobs.

Minimun Wage Facts

http://www.minimumwage.com/myths/

See it is always the congressional democrats and labor unions pushing the min. wage agenda.

Because the congressional democrats buy votes with min wage, and the unions gain income with min. wage.

Journeyman pay scale is based on the minimum wage, so raising the min wage raises the journeyman wage, and that raises union dues, and that raises union political contributions to the democrat party.

Always follow the money.

The min. wage is so high it is no longer being used as an entry level wage it has become a median level wage, and that is why you hear the democrats and unions crying for a “Living Wage” because more people with families are working for min.wage.

Honestly, it would take a lot longer than two weeks before I would notice. I am sure there are some places I use where people make less than $17 an hour but not on a daily basis.

Inane question, because the majority of the population wouldn't be around. It would, however mean that for two weeks you could walk safely around the streets of any city in America.

EDIT: Not the working people making it unsafe. But think of ALL the violent criminals. Do you think they are making more than $15 per hour? Get real.

I guess you could ask what would happen if everyone making over $100,000 a year suddenly disappeared? There goes over 90% of all tax receipts. There goes your doctors, your structural engineers, Obama, Reid, Pelosi, just about every business owner, etc.

And now the mincing of words and attempts at insults (greedy capitalists, old rich white men, Teapublicans).

Is that all they were aspiring to? Those are the jobs people work when they are getting a higher education or, better job training or certifications. What kind of person would want to plan a family, or a retirement, with low paying jobs?

Since you seem to feel so strongly about this how about telling us about all the times you pay more than the asking price for the things you buy? When was the last time you told someone, "Oh, that price is too low. Let me pay you more so you can increase the wages of your employees."?

Imagine, Malibu Democrats would have to find out what a vacuum cleaner sounds like...It wouldn't change the amount of Social Security tax they pay though...Because their "help" is invisible and exempt from TAXES...except Wesley Snipes because....

Pretty much everyone in the city I live in would disappear, myself included.

Who's looking down on them? Minimum wage is an entry level job. If you choose to stick with it your whole life, that's no one else's problem but your own.

Badly, but manageable.

But the very same disappearance would affect their life even worse.

After all, they wanted to work at those jobs. Therefore it is safe to assume that they needed those jobs.

ONE CORRECTION: I would not want all of those people to disappear since my wife is earning less than $15 and I love her. She would be upset if she would be fired because of some liberal class envy war.

anyone who values people based on their income is scum and does not deserve nor have the amount of responsibility necessary to run a sustainable society, regardless of their gang colors....ahem, political party.

Didn't someone already make a movie about all the Mexicans disappearing?

Oh say can you see the racism that is rampant here.......'a day without a Mexican'??? That's the best you can do, really? Everyone does better when everyone does better.

That is an awful lot pf people, probably most pf us. Ot would greatly impact my life.

I'd get pretty hungry, but most employees I interact with are high-pay professionals.
Really ?

I bet I'd have a lot more money in my pocket.... and if they disappeared for 2 weeks they would have less money in their pocket.
