Obama investing $3.4 billion to fund continued research on clean coal projects?

$3.4 billion for clean coal? Isn't that the equivalent of healthy cigarrettes? If healthy cigarrettes doesn't seem to make sense to you, then you get my point. What exactly does this do to boost the economy?

back in the 1800's a newspaper predicted that flying machines were as likely to happen as a man walking on the moon. the point being most inventions were derided by people at some point. the fact is america has abundant and cheap supplies of coal. if someone can figure out how to burn it cleanly it will go a long way towards reducing our dependence on foreign sources of oil. as far as the people who say it cant be done, this is america dammit, whos says it CANT be done. innovation is what made this country great and it seems like people have forgot that. as far as the benefits, this country was built on cheap energy, and how many jobs would be created building and maintaining coal plants, mining coal, keeping all that money in this country, etc. sure their are concerns about nature, but the alternative is $8 a gallon gas, what would that do for jobs? their are other ways to provide power, but most of them are just as far back as clean coal in the race, and arent a sure thing like coal is(clean or not). at this point none of them provide enough real power, and wont anytime soon(or ever), or have even worse problems, like corn biofuel, what will happen when all that fertilizer and pesticide from those massive corn crops hits the lower missisippi and the gulf of mexico? and it isnt really any cleaner than gas pollution wise. i guess you could say basically that yes, i believe it is worth the investment to try, as its worth trying lots of things, because that is what it will take, along with people helping by lowering their energy consumption.

They don't clean the coal. They have precips that clean the smoke from the coal. I am sure I did not spell that correct but am tired of this nonsense of clean coal. These scubbers are in the towers that rise about the coal fired power plants. Detroit Edison at their Monroe, MI plant does a very good job. Would be nice if the media knew what it was talking about.

I think the clean coal initiative is very good, because he's funding projects that will help the united states develop a alternate, renewable source of energy. however, he is still practical and trying to come up with an immediate solution that can be used sooner

This is because fossil fuels are becoming harder to acquire as they are drained out of the natural environment, so the companies that extract and sell them will be able to do so at higher prices and achieve a higher profit margin. On the other hand, technologies such as nuclear, solar and geothermal power do not have this kind of limitation, and will only become cheaper in the future, which means there is less incentive for corporations that want money to pursue them. Since the american government is in the payroll of the corporations, they naturally support continuing to use fossil fuels.

That's politics. It's probably not possible to go with 100% clean renewable energy when we don't have the capability right now. We have to take steps to get there. This is one of those steps, although I think it's too much money.
