Question:
Should the US change our gun laws to match Great Britain since their country is so much safer?
2009-07-10 12:50:00 UTC
Last year there were 42 gun-related deaths in Great Britain. This number includes homicides, suicides and accidental deaths.

In 2005 (the latest year for which numbers are available) there were 30,364 gun-related deaths in the United States. This number includes homicides, suicides, and accidental deaths.

True, the United States has more people than Great Britain so you can’t really compare these two numbers. Britain has about 61 million, while the United States has about 296 million, which gives the U.S. about five times the population of Great Britain. So, a better comparison of the numbers would be to multiple the British gun deaths by five.

42 x 5 = 210

Now we can compare the numbers.

Gun-related deaths for Great Britain (if given a population equal to the United States) = 210

Gun-related deaths in the United States = 30,364.

210 vs. 30,364

Yes, the days of gun ownership should come to an end for the greater good of all Americans. No one is safe as long as this country is flooded with guns.

No, I don't believe so. I want to keep my right to bear arms and the freedoms this Country is known for. Unfortunately, the reason that there is so much crime in the US is that criminals are not prosecuted; they are released with a slap on the wrist so they know that there aren't consequences for breaking the law. Why should innocent people be held accountable for what the criminals do? I want the right to be able to protect my family and my possessions. The criminal will always find a way to get guns even when there are laws against having unregistered guns. Those who follow the law and register the guns and have permits should not be punished. Those who break the law and who commit crimes with guns should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

You can compare all the numbers you want to; you are not writing down the true facts. I want a gun for my own safety, thank you and I will fight for that right always.

So you're extrapolating statistics for countries with vastly different demographics, traditions, and legal systems. Nice.

Tell you what, send the residents of Detroit, Miami, East LA, South Chicago, New Orleans, Houston, Wash. D.C., and Brooklyn over to England and see what happens to those statistics.

Edit: Also, including suicides in these statistics is also very spurious. Japan has even more stringent gun control than Britain and has an astronomically higher suicide rate. Britain actually has a higher rate of suicide than the USA does, as do the Scandinavian countries. Explain that one.

Sure comrade, just invalidate that pesky old Constitution. While you're at it, just make Barack Fuhrer for life, which I'm sure, judging by your far left wing liberal rhetoric on this forum, you would love. Then, form a Gestapo, and go door to door and confiscate everyone's weapons at gunpoint. Right comrade? Just out of curiosity, how WOULD you go about turning America into a 'gun free' society, anyway? I'm dying to hear you answer this question, but I doubt you will.

Another gun related question, what your deal with depriving Americans of Guns anyway?

Would it make you feel better if the victims jumped out of windows?

Would you then want to ban tall buildings?

Safer? Apparently you haven't been to a dive Pub in England late night...they don't need guns...they have broken beer bottles other wise known as the "English Switch-blade" to slice your throat. Brits are grizzly when made angry...where do you think Americans inherited our attitudes from?

It is because we are not permitted to arm ourselves that Britain ian't Great anymore, otherwise we would have all ready hung this sellout TRAITOR Gordon Brown and thrown his corrupt government in jail.

Do not permit your HELL-SPAWN president to disarm you otherwise you will all become prisoners of your government, just like us Brits.

Am I wrong or Didn't the Swiss Resistance use to kill their Austrian invaders with cross-bows and swords and spears, when they were an occupied country?

Guns or cross-bows, no one should mess with those warriors.

no, we have millions more guns out there already, and Britain's violent crime went up when they banned guns. Ours goes down when we inact concealed carry laws.

However, it doesn't matter because no one is going to get a Constitutional amendment passed to erode our rights.

There were 34 in 2006 in Switzerland

Every male citizen there is a member of the army and has a semi-automatic weapon.

It has more to do with the people.

Unlike the US, Switzerland has no "CULT" of firearms.

No. Our constitutional right guarantees us a right to bear arms. I don't care about your statistics.

How about the violent crimes altogether, regardless of gun control? I am not saying which is better, just curious.

No! They should just enforce the hundreds of laws that are already on the books! Quit trying to take any more rights away, we've lost enough already!

No. There is a reason we have the second amendment. And the criminals will still have guns no matter what laws you pass. And there is only one reason the government would want to disarm you and it is NOT for your protection.
2009-07-10 19:55:55 UTC
uhhh no.

just cause a sheep is safe out to pasture does not mean I'd want to be one.
2009-07-10 19:54:00 UTC
No.

Guns are illegal in GB so people are forced to use other means for their murders.

You didn't think about that did ya?

Once you get that straightened out you might want to look into the facts behind your screen name.
