Sen. Harry Reid spoke on the senate floor, as part of the recent debate (you know, the one where republicans wanted to cut spending and democrats said they were too "extreme") about the
evil republicans who wanted to do away with cowboy poetry and various other "arts."

From the transcript: “The mean-spirited bill, H.R. 1, eliminates National Public Broadcasting,” said Reid in a floor speech. “It eliminates the National Endowment of the Humanities, National Endowment of the Arts. These programs create jobs. The National Endowment of the Humanities is the reason we have in northern Nevada every January a cowboy poetry festival. Had that program not been around, the tens of thousands of people who come there every year would not exist.”

So, is this worth shutting down the government?

No, we need to stop the silly season in Washington and start cutting spending.

If the government stopped funding the Cowboy Poetry Festival, the Cowboy Poetry can find a way to fund itself. Less then ten percent of the money it cost to run the cowboy poetry festival came from the state and federal government. you said in your quote that tens of thousands of people go there every year, they could charge those people a little bit more and cover that without problems. people are obviously willing to pay to go to this due to the fact that a four day "deluxe" ticket is 60 bucks. ticket sales paid for about 45 percent of the cost to keep it running, around 25 percent came from business sponsors, and a little over 20 percent of the cost was covered by business sponsors. With it being so popular in the news it's practically free advertisement. so the next one they have will probably be the largest crowd they have ever had. they will be able to cover the measly ~7% given to them by the government.

Harry Reid also got an extremely high pork bill for salmon research in Nevada; there hasn't been a salmon in Nevada since 1930 and it's a landlocked state meaning it never will.

No. Besides, real cowboys don't do poetry. Only the "Brokeback Mountain" types do.

I think it might be worth a few bucks to teach our VP how to count.
