Question:
Did you know that Obama wants to reform healthcare to save money?
2009-11-11 03:12:35 UTC
Forward: I am Canadian and I sell medical insurance. I know the difference between the two systems and I know that what is being pushed through in the US is not anything like the Canadian style Universal Healthcare system. I have 2 differing thoughts as to why it is not following usual UHC systems in other countries 1) because forcing people to buy insurance will help the insurance companies make more money and pull them out of the shittr, 2) It's only the first stage of a bigger plan to completely revamp the system to proper UHC.

In one interview transcript I read he said America was out of money and spiraling healthcare bills will sink the US eventually if the US doesn't do something about it now. This lends itself to my second idea of why, but the first is still strong in my head as well.

In fact, Canada has UHC and Canada spends 10% of it's GDP to support the UHC system. The US spends 16% of it's GDP on healthcare and yet it's citizens still have to pay for insurance!

Q: Did you know it's actually more cost efficient to run a proper UHC system?

Q: Did you know Obama has stated it is to reduce cost long term?

Q: Why do you think Obama wants to reform the American healthcare system?

Ah I personally believe it is more along the lines of your first idea as to why he is doing this as opposed to the second.

I've tried explaining to various people that this isn't universal health care and they completely miss the point of that and scream that it's socialism.

If it was, they wouldnt have to pay for it no? This way they are being forced under penalty to purchase insurance from corrupt for profit insurance companies.

Why no longer purely restoration Medicare and enhance it, it is already in place? the different day some guy grew to become into on television, and stated he had cheated Medicare out of $20 million. it is just one guy. There must be superior punishment for persons dishonest Medicare. permit's enact torte' reform. besides. What we fairly choose, is people in Washington with a sprint extra ideas interest, too a lot of them are actually not very vivid. the final ingredient we choose is the government to run something, have you ever observed that mail is getting worse, it took some thing from MN to GA 11 days to reach in1st class mail, yeah government does this type of super interest. i be attentive to Medicare is administered by utilising the government, yet they're going to offer us some thing run by utilising governemnt, so lower back why no longer purely restoration what's already in place? Pigeon, you're perfect, my husband retired from a enterprise final year after 30.7 years, 3 months before his retirement, the enterprise introduced that any one who qualifies for medicare would be dropped. this would be a hugh fortune 500 enterprise, so absolutely everyone who thinks it won't ensue resides in lala land.

Now let me tell you what is what. Our health care system is seriously flawed because of government interference. More will only make it much worse. Here is why.

Before all this nonsense started, American people paid out of pocket for their regular health care and had Catastrophic Care insurance or "hospitalization" insurance to pay for unexpected major problems. We selected any doctor we wanted, negotiated fees, doctors in private practice could be found in every neighborhood as well as Charity run low cost or free clinics. Then the Liberals decide to "fix" it.

They began with Medicare and Medicaid. Then they added HMO's, Health Maintenance Organizations to the mix. This effectively separated the care giver from the care receiver by injecting a third party to pay the bills.

The result was a drop in the number of doctors in private practice, doctors offices overcrowded with a bunch of people who did not need to be there but since it was "free" or a low co-pay they went anyway. Poor people began to show up at Hospital Emergency rooms for routine care, again, the cost passed on to insurance companies. Additional cost was added by piles of paperwork as insurance companies, ill-equipped to provide actual care desperately sought to contain costs while complying with more and more government imposed mandates.

While true, there are better UHC systems than the one being proposed in the USA but the entire concept of UHC is bascially flawed. Private enterprise has always done a far better job than any government bureaucracy.

The answer is to get the government out of the way, let insurance companies do what they are designed to do which is to protect financial assets and allow people to buy tax exempt Catastrophic Care polices on their own instead of employer provided plans and have tax exempt medical savings accounts for out of pocket expenses. People would be able to once again shop for the best deal, quality of care or whatever they want from a doctor.

Medical Students from abroad who are here on schlorship should be required to donate time to clinics, too, as part of their training.

Let the free market do what it does best. Provide goods and services people want at fair market prices. Free enterprise provides food, shelter and clothing without government bureaucracies. Why not health care?

Want cheaper prescrition drugs and eyeglasses? Try Walmart. Why do you suppose that is?

Q: Prove the assumption in your first question. More cost efficient? Than what? For whom?

Q: Do you believe everything Obama or any politician tells you?

Q: Why do YOU think Obama wants to reform the American healthcare system?

I lived in Canada for 38 years and now have lived in the US for a dozen years. I also work in health care here. My wife recently needed orthopedic surgery to repair torn cartiledge in her knee. She called the orthopedic surgeon and had an appointment for 2 days later. He sent her for an MRI that she had 4 days after that. Her operation was scheduled for 1 week after that.

Wondering how long that would take in Canada I started looking up statistics from the Nova Scotia Department of Health, Dalhousie University, and the Frazier Institute.

The wait to see an orthopedic surgeon is 1 year. The wait for an MRI is 4 months, The wait for surgery is another year.

So the operation my wife had in 2 weeks would take about 2 1/2 years in Canada.

That's 2 extra years of pain, restricted movement, loss of income and poor quality of life.

I'm not even going to make a comment.

"The US spends 16% of it's GDP on healthcare and yet it's citizens still have to pay for insurance!"

And they will be spending a lot more when the government takes control. Because that's what our government does...it spends our money. No, wait. Let me clarify that...it WASTES our money.

A: Show me one as example that is running efficiently. Have not seen one, yet.

A: He also said he 'would not allow' unemployment to go higher than 8.25 percent and it's already jumped more than 2%. He lies.

A: Because he wants control. Just like he wants control of the banks and the auto industry. Liberals believe government should control everything. That is their agenda.

A: yes it is more cost efficient to run a proper UHC system. However, while this universal health care works in Canada, there are many other countries in which it does not work so well in. Take Spain for example. If you want good medical attention in spain, you have to pay for a private doctor to come to your home, otherwise you will be in lines of people waiting to be treated.

A: Yes, Obama is always looking for ways to reduce spending and try to get the U.S. out of debt. Every individual state in the U.S. is trying to do the same thing. If he succeeded in saving us money, then he would turn out to be a hero in the people's eyes and it might allow him to be reelected.

A: Obama wants to reform American healthcare because he believes it could be better. He might have a history of being too poor to be able to afford healthcare or he might have known people who could not. Either way, universalizing healthcare would make it cheaper for everyone and then the poor families could afford it too.

If you don't have a dog in this fight then keep your 2 cents to yourself. If people would pay their damn medical bills the cost of hospital stays would drop by a third . If all people would pay their medical bills Dr's bills would drop a third. If people would not sue their Dr.because they missed American idol while they were recovering from 8 hrs. of surgery then the cost of health care would go down by half.

Yes I do know that he wants reform to save American money and provide better healthcare. When it comes to efficiency, those in Holland, Taiwan and Switzerland would disagree with you!

FACT - Insurance companies in the USA admit to pushing up prices, buying politicians and not paying out claims when they should [1]

FACT - PER PERSON the USA spends more on healthcare than any other nation on the planet [2]

FACT - Obama debated his plans before the election for healthcare [3]

FACT - the chance of a child under five of dying in the USA is greater than industrialised nations with universal health coverage [4]

FACT - Obama was elected by the American people to bring in change [5]

FACT - Obama wants to stop insurance companies from screwing American [6]

FACT - The reforms Obama wants work in the Netherlands and Switzerland [7]

Let me know if my facts are wrong, but please provide proof.

These are all lies. He wants to take over America with Gov run socialistic health care ripping people off and raising the prices.

He wants to raise our taxes and force people to buy Health care. This is taking money out of poor mothers and babies mouths because if they do not get health care, they will also be fined.

Another way to rip off the American people.

We cannot afford his plan and he wants to ruin America.

I wonder how much he will pocket ripping off Americans????

Lieing and cheating go hand and hand.

No, Obama wants control. He doesn't care how much taxpayer money he spends.

Spiraling healthcare costs are due to greedy doctors and hospital owners. It should not cost $500 for a trip to the emergency room when all they do is look at you and give you something for pain.

Man today is the day for rational thinking!! But don't you see rational isn't the question we are asking here. Throw some Frank Luntz and Newt Gingrich buzz words in there along with some fear mongering, a lot of doom and gloom and not a fact to back them up and you have republican talking point. It will be spread through the right wing noise machine to see what sticks and when they latch onto the right combination they run with it.

You see people just want to be left alone in their own beliefs and the hard truth be damned.

Is that cancer of society called welfare and the dole.... How bad is it up there?\

Anyway, your questions seems to have missed a number of points... like waiting for a year before a hip replacement.... you know, people dying off before treatment is a sure way to save money...

It is more cost efficient to run a proper UHC system. It is believed that in the long term the United States would in fact save considerable money through the cost savings of a UHC system.

The president knows as do many who run the numbers that the cost savings by itself would eventually retire the entire National Debt of the United States if this UHC system were put in place.

Yea, if the government took control of food production they'd save money too.
