As current sources of petroleum begin to run out and demand (from China and India) rises the prices goes up. That's what we are seeing now.

But the present sources of petroleum aren't the only sources. They are simply the cheapest, most easily recoverable sources.

When oil was $14 a barrel it made no economic sense to exploit tar sands where the extraction costs run to $40 a barrel. But if oil is over $60 a barrel then tar sands become an economically sensible thing to exploit. There is enough crude in Canadian tar sands alone to meet the worlds energy needs for a century or so.

After tar sands there oil shales which can be exploited. Recovery cost for shales are higher than for tar sands but the oil is there. Oil shale in the United States contain sufficient petroleum to meet US needs for the next 200+ years.

Coal can be converted into petroleum. The USA has some of the planets largest coal reserves, an amount of energy sufficient to meet US energy needs for the next 500 years.

And, of course, there are renewable energy sources from biomass to solar to geothermal to waste conversion that we have the technology to exploit but for which investment is limited because there is still relatively cheap petroleum available. These alternative fuels also require large infrastructure development costs.

When we run out of oil there will be a catastrophe. This is why we need to prepare now - in otherwords, stop building giant suburbs that require cars, move to the innercity, use forms of public transit, walk, and look for alternatives for energy use that are renewable and can be renewed quickly. Don't be afraid to throw a solar panel on your roof or a wind mill in your neighbouring park - it'll help you be prepared for when we run out of gas.

a car that runs on water ? ha ha ha ha - man that's funny.

I got one for you "what will happen when the oil starts to run out and the army's all over the world figure out that the Last war will be Won by the country that has the most oil ?"

hey, I sorta like that question.

The oil companies will have to start doing the same thing to methane, natural gas and hydrogen. We will learn someday that the government has been held back by oil company money, we could have all had LP gas cars, hydrogen cars, better electric engines and so forth if it wasn't for big oil companies. By the way- my car gets 14 miles per gallon............

Who knows? Will you care, since someone as illiterate as you will be working at McDonalds for the rest of your life and won't be able to afford an automobile?

We'll be forced too use other means for our energy consumption. But before that happens we can use solar energy for just about all our daily needs.

Everybody will have great big planters in their driveways. Or you could use them for extra storage until they start to fall apart.
