Question:
Why do Republicans dislike the elderly?
2010-12-08 16:42:44 UTC
They have no problem with a budget measure that provides tax cuts for the rich, those making 250,000 or more, and those making 1,000,000 or more.

They are totally willing to extend tax cuts to them that cost 900 billion dollars.

But they refuse to help the elderly who worked all their lives and are on social security, refusing to allow a $250 dollar "cost of living" increase that costs 14 billion dollars.

900 billion dollars for the rich = no problem, they already have so much, but they need government help.

14 billion dollars for the elderly = cannot afford, let them suffer

The worst part of this is that the Republicans use the deficit as the excuse for not granting the $250 dollars when the total cost would be a fraction of what the cost of extending the tax cuts for the wealthy is. How can they argue that with a straight face unless their minds really have become so convoluted that they actually believe their own propaganda.

Also, despite low inflation the elderly have higher medical and drug costs that could be somewhat offset with this small amount. It is unbelievable that Republicans would vote against this.

I also don’t understand why the Democrats don’t just let the Republicans actually filibuster these bills so that the American people can look at their television sets and understand what lengths the Republicans will go to protect the interests of the wealthy while ranting against helping everyone else.

Edit: Republicans answering your question don't seem to understand that Democrats are fully aware that the COLA does not come into play because of low inflation (although cons keep screaming about nonexistent hyperinflation.)

The fact is that seniors have some increased costs, as I mentioned above. The $250 is to help them with such costs because many depend entirely on their Social Security and their incomes are static.

Gawd, do you people ever think? How the hell can extending the current tax rate cost anyone anything UNLESS you're a Democrat who thinks that every person's personal wealth is the governments to take and spend as they see fit and allow you to keep a portion of it? IT ISN'T THEIR FRIKKIN MONEY! It's OURS! The Democrats SAY it's going to cost $900 Billion. It isn't so, they are not going to get to collect that amount unless taxes go back up to the rate they were before the Bush tax rates. For example. Suppose you earn $500 per week on your job and your employer tells you that he's going to raise your salary by $100 at the end of the year and he tells you this at the first of the year. When the last day of December rolls around, your boss says he's not going to be able to give you your raise. Now.......... explain to me, how the hell your debts automatically went up simply because you didn't get the raise, please? Unless you CHARGED money and made debts based on PROJECTED income, they didn't. That is exactly the same situation extending the Bush tax cuts is. No more and no less and why you people can't understand that is amazing to me.

Um, first the extension of the tax cuts to the wealth is far less then the 900 billion dollars you are talking about. Second, the rules say that COLA's raises only come when they are called for. If the cost of living is still less then it was in 2009 then the elderly and those on disability hasn't seen drastic cost of living. Third, by allowing people to keep their money doesn't cause the government to go into the red. It is living beyond your means that does it. Neither party cares for the average American since neither party wants to cut the Federal Government and give power back to the States where it belongs.

How come people like you can't understand what is really happening? Did you know that around 50% of American's don't pay taxes? Don't you understand that the wealthiest pay more in taxes then the bottom 20% make in a year? I have met people who pay around a million a month in taxes and you want to tax the successful even more so that the Democrats can keep on spending?

They don't , Obama cuts their cola for years and offers them a ONE TIME $250 payment, after he cuts Medicare $500 billion in Obama Care and finds enough money to pay more on Welfare this year ALONE, than Bush spent on the Iraq War in the eight years he was president```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````

SS was indexed to inflation 30 YEARS ago, when the DEMS controlled both houses of Congress..

They didnt get a COLA increase... because there has been DEFLATION, not INFLATION...

FAIL. Dems let this happen, not Republicans. Also, I find the Conservatives respect the elderly and their traditional values A LOT more than libs.

That's sad.

In general, when money is taken out of the pockets of those that would spend it locally, even at just places like food, clothing, furniture types of places, its speeds up the local areas downward spiral.

Good Grief! no one "gave" millions to "rich" people you liberals are worse than stupid.
2010-12-08 16:43:39 UTC
Wrong. Democrats are in charge and allowed this to happen. NIce try but you fail. If you bothered to read your own story, then you would know that democrats did this on purpose because they fast tracked it. SO blame them
