Question:
How come suddenly the "scientists" that touted Global Cooling jumped on Gores hoax of Global Warming?

While worrying about Montana's receding glaciers, Schweitzer, who is 50, should also worry about the fact that when he was 20 he was told to be worried, very worried, about global cooling. Science magazine (Dec. 10, 1976) warned of "extensive Northern Hemisphere glaciation." Science Digest (February 1973) reported that "the world's climatologists are agreed" that we must "prepare for the next ice age." The Christian Science Monitor ("Warning: Earth's Climate is Changing Faster Than Even Experts Expect," Aug. 27, 1974) reported that glaciers "have begun to advance," "growing seasons in England and Scandinavia are getting shorter" and "the North Atlantic is cooling down about as fast as an ocean can cool." Newsweek agreed ("The Cooling World," April 28, 1975) that meteorologists "are almost unanimous" that catastrophic famines might result from the global cooling that the New York Times (Sept. 14, 1975) said "may mark the return to another ice age." The Times (May 21, 1975) also said "a major cooling of the climate is widely considered inevitable" now that it is "well established" that the Northern Hemisphere's climate "has been getting cooler since about 1950."

"Telltale signs are everywhere —from the unexpected persistence and thickness of pack ice in the waters around Iceland to the southward migration of a warmth-loving creature like the armadillo from the Midwest.Since the 1940s the mean global temperature has dropped about 2.7° F. Although that figure is at best an estimate, it is supported by other convincing data. When Climatologist George J. Kukla of Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Geological Observatory and his wife Helena analyzed satellite weather data for the Northern Hemisphere, they found that the area of the ice and snow cover had suddenly increased by 12% in 1971 and the increase has persisted ever since. Areas of Baffin Island in the Canadian Arctic, for example, were once totally free of any snow in summer; now they are covered year round."

I remember the global cooling scare, before the global warming and present global cooling scale. We should focus on making delicious sausage instead.

Their monthly payout must have stopped from the cooling fanatics. If Al's got the money they'll say anything. I'm serious. Unless you support global warming, there are no research grants. That's how the truth is manipulated. But it's even more flagrant. It's called climategate.

The conspiracy behind the Anthropogenic Global Warming myth (aka AGW; aka ManBearPig) has been suddenly, brutally and quite deliciously exposed after a hacker broke into the computers at the University of East Anglia’s Climate Research Unit (aka Hadley CRU) and released 61 megabites of confidential files onto the internet. (Hat tip: Watts Up With That)

When you read some of those files – including 1079 emails and 72 documents – you realise just why the boffins at Hadley CRU might have preferred to keep them confidential. As Andrew Bolt puts it, this scandal could well be “the greatest in modern science”. These alleged emails – supposedly exchanged by some of the most prominent scientists pushing AGW theory – suggest:

Conspiracy, collusion in exaggerating warming data, possibly illegal destruction of embarrassing information, organised resistance to disclosure, manipulation of data, private admissions of flaws in their public claims and much more.

The real scientists all signed a petition urging rejection of the Kyoto Treaty. But you never hear that mentioned do you? The lesson for all of us is consider the facts, the source, and make up your own mind.

But Obama's chief scientific adviser has come out and said that by 2025 we will lose 1 billion people on the planet to GLOBAL COOLING. I did not think that anyone would be screaming "Ice Age" THIS soon. Too many of us were alive when they were screaming "Ice Age" last time.

But considering that the earth has been on a cooling trend for the last 15 years, you know why they have been changing the term "global warming" to "global climate change" because they know that the cycle is changing but do not want to admit that yet...with "global climate change" they can claim that they are right no matter what.

firewoman...I guess you do not let things like facts get in your way. 2008 was the 3rd coldest year globally in recorded history. Cycles happen, they always have, and they always will.

OLD ARTICLE! THAT IS THE POINT! As recently as 35 years ago, we were promised an ice age if we did not change everything we were doing. What did we change? We did more of what they were shouting that we should stop. The same scientists are providing the data for the global warming crowd. It is laughable.

future...were you 3 in the early 70s or hung over from the 60s? The "Ice Age" claims were widespread and "URGENT", the only reason that they were not as widespread as GW today is that Al Gore had not invented the Internet yet. For the early 70s, it was reported EVERYWHERE!

ADDED: For those of you who just do not get it, there is a LOT of money in the fear industry. That industry is held up like a 3 legged stool by government, media, and "science", which is where the billions flow back into the hands of. And I put "science" in quotes because most science in this world is for sale to the highest Grantor.

It has not been thoroughly debunked. Saying since there's snow outside, there's no such thing as global warming isn't a counter argument.

Scientists have become as bad as politicians and celebrities. They'll be a parrot for whoever is the highest bidder. Why can't we go back to the scientists that made discoveries just for the sake of it, and just followed the evidence wherever it may lead?

Global warming is just one theory what pollution may do to us in the long run. I very well remember global warming and greenhouse gasses already being proposed as a theory in the early 70's, and don't remember ANYTHING about global cooling being discussed - I have a feeling this was one article by one guy which you guys are now trying to misrepresent.

We know RIGHT NOW that pollution is bad for us and kills us and our children. Wall Street fatcat polluters are just trying to use this endless debate to delay reform and protect their bottom line.

It's a well thought out tactic, and they are playing you guys like a violin as usual.

See, this is why I never pay any attention to so-called "experts", because I've been around long enough to see them run around screaming in panic from one side of the spectrum to the other. I remember the "ice age" panic very clearly.

It's a false science, like Numerology, Astrology, Alchemy and Eugenics.

Used for political money-making and nothing more.

Peer review papers is all about getting money for their next grant.

Now the money is in man made global warming so to them it is the golden goose and they are not about to kill it.

1974?

Time's archives seem to go way back.

Nice story from George Will.....he's a great unbiased contributor and one of the world's most famous scientists.

$$$.

On a side note, scientists are notorious (not all of them but I won't hesitate to say most are) for overlooking things they simply don't like so they can prove whatever they want for $.

P.S. that link is ancient..

Global warming is no hoax. I am 65 and through those years I can see many changes due to global warming. We have had global warming since the beginning of time. All one has to do is read history to know it is true. Deserts where huge bodies of water use to be or where lush forests use to be. Man and his habit of treating the earth like a huge refuse pile does more harm than anything.*
