Question:
Syrian Refugee Crisis?
?

I'm trying to win an ongoing argument with someone about the Syrian Refugee crisis. I'm trying to say that I think that we should allow refugees who have been background checked come here, but the person says that it is impossible to do a background check on the refugees. Is this correct? Is it impossible to give refugees background checks? BTW I'm going to need reliable sources :-)

Nearly 750,00 refugees -- an average of 70,000 a year -- have settled in our country since 9/11. In that entire time the only event that has raised any concern with refugees and terrorism is two Iraqis in Kentucky who were arrested on terrorist charges, for aiding al-Qaeda in Iraq. None...zero...have been accused of domestic terrorism whatsoever. That means, the rest of the refugees we accepted have managed to rejadust to our society and living their lives as any other American here in this country.

It's also wise to consider how many Syrians the United States is planning to take. At the moment (and also from the article linked to above) the number for the coming year is 10,000 carefully screened people. That is, quite literally, a drop in the bucket. There are more than 4 million people who have been displaced by the war in Syria. Sweden is taking 25,000 Syrian refugees per month.

Regarding the Syrian involved in the attacks in Paris, it is not. All of the Paris Attacks were European nationals. In short, Syrian refugees aren't the problem at all, just a knee-jerk reaction and a scapegoat.

your government is being deliberately obtuse on this. ordinary background checks aren't possible because the Syrian government a) doesn't have such records for all its citizens and b) won't cooperate with us anyway. [sources: multiple internet reports, including congressional testimony].

this does not mean that there are no measures that we could take which, if done, would lessen the risks. However, the Obama administration is allowing the UN commission on refugees to decide which "refugees" to send to America. They have even fewer resources than America does and zero incentive to do the job right. [sources: internet reports].

so, in essence, the detractors are correct -- there will be, effectively, no background checks worth then name. And Obama is shoving this down our throats for reasons he won't adequately explain.

So, the House of Representatives votes by a veto-proof majority to restrict the process and Harry Reid in the Senate vows that the House bill will never get heard [because he will filibuster it to death while Obama acts as he pleases].

it is almost impossible to do a background check on the refugees since the records are either destroyed or not available. surely orphans and widows will not be of any harm
