Question:
How Many of You Answer Seriously on Y/A ?
2007-01-18 07:19:56 UTC
I came to this site for INFORMATION and SENSIBLE DEBATE , but lately and consistently I see this site as 'losing it's appeal' for a myriad of reasons . The truly intelligent users seem to be at an all-time low . I don't mind the 'clearly joking or spoofing rants', but IGNORANCE is Abounding now . Perhaps Yahoo should have 'cleaned-up the mess' FIRST, and then maybe worried about 'Stars' and other little 'ornaments' !!!

What do you really think ?

You don't ever have the opportunity because of all of the Conservative trolling going on on this page. Some of them believe they are police with 200 plus bogus profiles a piece to control the page with right wing spam. Gaming points and opinions is the only goal with them, since they have all of the failing answers. If you were and are concerned you would help put a stop to it.

I felt the same as you at first. After being called this and that for no other reason than voicing my opinion and being violated for pointing out 56 spelling errors in a 60 word question, what I came to realize is that most responders really have no clue what is going on. Pick and choose questions to respond to. If you like a certain subject, concentrate your answers there. You have to grow a thick skin and see that some responders are like some talk show hosts, full of crap and unwilling to even listen to a viewpoint other than their own. There are a lot of good people on this site as well that can be very help full . Take the good with the bad. Alfred E. Newman had it right when he said,"What? Me worry?"

I do try to answer all serious questions seriously, and I am trying to ignore the obviously slanted political opinions, very thinly disguised as questions. I regard any "opinion" questions as propoganda unless sources are included to back up what would be considered slanderous statements in newspapers or magazines.

There are more and more kids pretending to be concerned conservatives or rabid liberals in an effort to spark flames and other foolishness in YA. By ignoring these types of questions, and forcing them to include sources or risk being ignored, maybe we can weed out the the obviously intolerant, the hate filled and the ignorant which regularly troll through trying to mess up our good time.

I usually answer seriously, but I can get snarky at stupid or repetitive questions. I am actually kind of in to answering the really good questions.

I have also noticed that there has been a rise in trolls, and find it depressing. I am afraid Yahoo Answers is going to end up just like the message boards.

In case you haven't noticed, Yahoo! Answers has got rid of many of the trolls and they are removing the questions that are a violation of the community guidelines a little quicker.

I do wonder about the answering seriously thing because there are many that post answers that are devoid of any factual basis but the participant comes off as if they believe everything that they are posting.

I do. There was only once I made a sarcastic comment...and I got best answer....go figure! But I do come here to help and to learn new things. But I agree about there being very ignorant(lack of knowledge) and close minded people on here. But...I guess that's what makes the world go 'round. Everyone has the right to their opinion...I just don't like the name calling and vulgar language.

I agree, to a limited degree. I think we tend to believe people we don't like because we disagree with them are messing up the site. And for every person who dislikes someone, there's usually his or her complement someplace on here. So one man's troll is another's redeemer of the site. That's the way it will always be here. Get past that, and you may squeeze some value from this place.

I try to answer seriously and I like to put links in my posts as often as possible. Now, you do get some truly idiotic questions and either my anger or wit will get the best of me. Some on the other hand, truly can't give a decent answer.

Depends on the question.Fools get foolish answers,Serious questions get serious answers by most. All seem to have a little fun with it,and sometimes you can even find a good laugh,or an interesting question or interesting answer.

It is impossible to answer seriously, if you do you will be targeted by one side or the other of the political spectrum and cited for abuse, since Y/A doesn't monitor abuse reports anything that is cited can result in your account being suspended! I answer serious questions with serious answers, and humorous ones with an attempt at humor, and Ignorant ones with ignorant answers!!

I am here because I am bored at work and school. If I was unemployed, I would be recovering from a hang over and a MT with a couple of lady friends. But I am not...

I answer some questions seriously and other not so much. Same with the questions I ask. Either way, I learn a lot.

relatively, based on the situation. it is not a great communicate board for being relatively stupid and getting a sturdy returned and forth going. it is nice for a sturdy one-liner to a stupid or poorly worded question, particular... yet I ordinarily answer greater extreme subjects, so my solutions tend to be greater extreme, and that i make an effort I spend answering them heavily adequate to answer them properly. previous that, although, i don't care because it is merely for myself. I have no very own stake in climate the asker listens to me or the effect of my advice, previous my very own conceitedness. and that i'm not a ineffective guy or woman...

I am mostly serious. The one major exception to my seriousness when I answer questions here is that almost every time that someone asks something like "Who do you want to see as the next President?" .... I almost always answer "Pee-Wee Herman."

Other than that, I try to be serious. And I do get very angry at the people who ask outrageously hateful and obviously rhetorical questions.

I think you are expecting too much from the site. Personally, I find it an amusing way to spend time and hone my skills writing more casually (as opposed to the formal technical writing I do at my job). Sometimes my answers are serious, much of the time they are attempts to be rude and/or humourous.

I think the stars are purty :P but seriously.. ask a serious question and you're bound to get one or two decent responses.. and there are a couple of good questions a day.. other than that enjoy a laugh and relax.. it's the best thing to do.

I try to but the juvenile questions and petty name calling do not allow debates. The extreme for both sides keep trying to cram their beliefs down the other sides throat and the other way around.

I agree with you. Nothing but hate-spewing, mis-informed, children taking over. It's too bad, otherwise this would have been much more interesting site if some civility could be invoked.

Serious questions get well thought out answers. But have you seen some of the questions?....especially from those pubescent kids and hate mongers.

I think that if you want a serious conversation, go to the Philosophy section. The politicians and religious fanatics haven't gotten to that yet.

this is a question and answer site, sensible debate shouldnt be had on here, thats considered chatting and personal conversation

i answer all questions seriously

I asnwer seriously, but some of the questions are assinine and offensive. I try to not stoop to their level, but get dragged down sometimes, as my temper gets the best of me.

How about if we appoint you as the censor? Then if people agree with what you want, they will be allowed to post?
