Question:
Why do people care so much about sports?

I understand why it can be fun to bet money on the superbowl or the world cup, but why do people faithfully watch professional teams all season long and proudly identify themselves a "Ravens Fan" or and "Orioles Fan" and fly O's flags in front of their house, etc. I've seen fights break out because someone wore a Yankees shirt to a BoSox game.

Don't give me this BS about it being "pride in your home town" or "pride in your community." If you care so much about your community, get involved in local politics, volunteer somewhere, do something worthwhile. Showing pride in your community by sitting on your *** and watching some millionaire toss a ball around just doesn't make any sense.

Whether or not you accept it, it IS a connection to the community. The team for which I root, the Detroit Tigers, are a founding member of the American League, and have represented Detroit in MLB since 1901. There are few things in life as constant as that.

When it comes to the sports, I think we human beings not only enjoy in them but also learn a lot of lessons about life through taking part in a variety of sport events.

First of all, sports tell us the lesson "never give up". In most of the sport competitions, you cannot slack or give up till the end. For example, in a formula one racing car competition, one driver should concentrate on the race every minute although there seems to be rarely possible that he can win the race. Not until the final second, no one will know what will happen, thus the opportunity to win the game still exist. In our daily life, once you have marked a goal, you should try every effort to reach it, and do not give up easily on the half road because you will never know the results in advance. That is what we can learn from the sports.

Secondly, I think that sports educate us to use appropriate avenues in competitions with others, especially in today’s society. Much bitter experience in sports has informed us that any unfair and illegal avenues in sports competition will be revealed and punished ultimately. For instance, those athletes with drug scandals will be eliminated their honor, which leave bad reputation among the general public. In fact, those who use inappropriate ways in the workplace will not succeed because the justice is the most wildly accepted. So, only the individuals who work hard and diligently have the opportunities to achieve success.

Moreover, sports teach us the importance of team spirit. It should be admitted that under some certain circumstances, we should put the team spirit on the first place. For example, in a football match, every member in the team should emphasize on whole team interests rather than his own show on the playground. Likewise, in our ordinary life, sometimes we should learn to strike the balance between the individual interest and the whole group in order to succeed.

As what have been discussed above, sports indeed contribute a lot to us because we can draw several lessons from them, that is--the belief "never give up", and the jusice in competition with others as well as the importance of team spirit.

Not all sports are played by a millionaire.

I dont really understand either.

I mean, who cares if the other team wins?

And most sport fantics make such a big deal of it.

Its so boring to just sit there and watch.

Dull minds are entertained by the dull.

I played sports throughout school but never cared much for it since. Some of my friends are professional baseball and football players and they say sports is too boring for them to watch also.

People enjoy destroying the majority of these men's lives for their own entertainment.

3/5 professional american athletes will be bankrupt and with no education 5 years after they retire.

Sports are a great distraction from life, watching professionals at a high level compete is entertaining, and even more so when you cheer for one side.

I never really understood people's fascination with watching grown men hitting each other and throwing a ball around or hitting a ball with a stick, it all seemed pretty stupid.

it's fun... to get into and care about something...

in a way, it's also nice that people's lives aren't on the line and that in the end, it doesn't really matter that much if you do lose... unlike in politics...

in its own way it's like being a part of an extended family...
