Question:
What is a liberal and what is a conservative? Why do people box themselves into one of them in America?

Why are people boxing themselves and others into a left xor right stance by calling themselves liberal xor conservative? I mean we aren't binary. There are more than two ways of thinking.

I lean left, but that doesn't mean much because you don't know what I lean left on, but it appears like a lot of people will automatically judge me.

That is only the perception and the reason the left and right can't get things passed. Truth is, there are now more Independents than members of either of party. In addition, a large number of Republicans and Democrats are more in the center, than left or right. Together with the Independents, the centrists/moderates from both parties control the elections, and dictate which direction the country moves in.

There is an old saying "Know your enemies" The far right makes the mistake of assuming when a conservative right policy or bill or opposed, it is the left opposing it. The left makes the same mistake assuming it is the right obstructing it. Neither understand it is the moderates and Independents who oppose going to far right or left, that is behind the opposition, and the right and left both then end up targeting the wrong group opposing them.

Good question, I think most people will "box" themselves because they want to be with those who think exactly the same way as they themselves think. I was once a part of the Democrat party up until they deserted me and most other realistic thinking people an dI have now been labeled if you will a Republican(fiscal conservative) and to the left that's a terrible thing to be I know.

That doesn't mean as you said that I follow blindly everything that's put out by the right either. I am perfectly capable and do think for my self with out the prompting of some political machine. One more thing I think that we can all agree there is more than enough stupidity to go around would you agree ?

I feel that one single political ideology can not survive as the sole entity in a society. It can not be done.

From school I learned that communism is where everything is in common, like in a commune. Have you ever watched Doctor Zhivago? That was very good, and I feel it was a good portrayal of their attempt to make everything in common. rent it on DVD if you can. They had a big house they confiscated from a rich guy and it was determined it could house several families. I guess they all were supposed to chip in and keep it up, because everything is community owned. Put the human factor in there, it simply did not work in the long haul. However, communist China has allowed a controlled measure of capitalism which has made the place boom economically. They still can not speak openly, they still have many civil rights violations. But, the country as a whole is better because they let go of their single ideology.

Capitalism in its purest form is evil. Human slavery of black people is a prime example of its purest evil form. Have you ever heard the song "I owe my soul to the company store"? That song is about something that is almost as evil. Miners were paid sub standard wages. There were no other housing or stores to buy stuff in except that which was supplied by the company with unfair prices. consequently, people got further in debt every day of their life... It was quite unfair. the rich mine owners were just that... rich off of the backs of their white (and other) "free slaves".

Socialism is where supposedly only the wealthy are taxed, and the wealth is redistributed to the ones who have little. Marget Thatcher said (paraphrased) "The trouble with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money", the full story of what she said exactly is in the link below. Anyway, Socialism takes away or at lest hinders the human incentive to upgrade ones position in life. It also takes away some incentive to be a productive member of society. Socialism is also the opposite of Aesop's Fable"the grasshopper and the ant". Some say that socialism is the first step to communism, but I do not believe that because Europe has been that way for generations.

However, going along with what happens in the UK, since the rich have been taxed to nothing, they are now taxing everyone hard.... Including their "pensioners" (retired). Thatcher was right, sooner or later you run out of the rich. Then the ones with very little get taxed to support those who won't support themselves.

In conclusion, I guess what we have today is one of the better ideological entities. Capitalism with safe guards from abuse. Nothing is perfect by no means, that is why problems show up and laws are made to plug the new hole in the dike.

Obama is a socialist. It doesn't matter what he says he is, his goals are clear. I agree something needs to be done with health care, I did got burnt by the greed of Lincoln National Insurance and their greedy actions which were under the radar of the law.... I had to file bankruptcy. I do feel we should have socialized medicine, but not the tricky lying and BS way Obama and Pelosi are doing it. They are villains for lying to the people. they are hitting the wall from previous misinformation and deception. To memory, I have never seen the executive and legislative branches of government in bed so tightly, this breeds corruption babies. And that is what we have until the people wake up with the 2010 elections.... Or their Waterloo may come with their health care plans.

I personally am a Conservative Constitutionalist. I do not see our country lasting all that much longer, both sides of the fence have abandoned the Constitution. Sotomayor is a prime example of that, and of what is already in there in the Supreme and lower courts. What a judge is supposed to do is evaluate a situation against and by what the Constitution says. They now have empathy to re-write the Constitution with their empathetic judicial tinkering.... they have a humanistic ideal and judge a case on their own personal ideology, then dance all around what the Constitution says. The correct "do process" is to change the Constitution with an amendment to keep up with changing society. From what I understand, the supreme court has only been overturned by an amendment 4 times, and one of them was their ruling about slavery. "Do Process" no longer includes all of the words written in the Constitution, even more of the Constitution is being dropped each year.

The 111th congress has abandon "do process". We are on clay feet.

People generally believe in the thinking and rationales of one side or another. Maybe not completely but mostly.

I do see that 'Cleaning Liberal Trash' has decided to make an *** of themselves again. This person does not seem to read questions before answering them. This person just flap flap flap on the keyboard.

Liberals don't call themselves that any more. They are Progressssssives.

At least the Europeans call themselves Social Democrats.

Everyone is a mixture of both. I am very liberal in many ways (like allowing people to own as many guns as they like) and very conservative (like stopping the government from taking my money and giving to to someone so that person will vote for them).

A conservative favors the status quo, as opposed to a liberal who wants to change everything. 99% are not either. Most fall in the middle. Most people have that label foisted upon them. I would not CHOOSE to be called either although I too lean left.

Conservatism believe in theocratic government, hate free speech, free thinking, and peace. They also hate multiculturalism, homosexuals and people of color. They are monolingual. And have are offended by education. They think college is evil.

Liberals are open minded, free thinkers, intelligent, and peace advocates. The love culture, and are color blind. They tend to know or try to learn other languages. And love college. Live and let live, in peace. All for one, and one for all.

"A liberal is basically a socialist in disguise...and a conservative is just an American"

A perfect example :)

Americans think in terms of black & white-

I, myself, am pro-gun, pro-choice, pro-capital punishment, anti-PC, am a gay male and a Euro-lefty...

It's enough to drive the average Yank insane :)

Oh, and that Al Capone avatar reminds me of one other thing- only Yanks think organized crime is a GOOD thing :)

Hm, you say we box ourselves in..does that make you a runner up?

It sounds as if you just got out a "box" yourself.

Choose your words more wisely and open your eyes! Think before you act. Observe and take note, because that is the only way you will really understand what you just asked.

There is a reason behind every action, why do people opt for specific sides?

Good point. Though I consider myself Conservative, there are things I agree with the Left on, such as gay marriage. no one is 100% for their political side, unless they are fanatical about it, and those people are the truly dangerous ones.

Why do we box ourselves in? Because we generally tend to agree with most of the issues that one of these two labels represent.

I proudly call myself a Conservative because I believe with most of the ideas Conservatives propose. Not every single idea, but most of them.

A liberal is someone who wants to make this a better country for as many people as possible.

A conservative is someone who wants to keep America the way he thinks it is.

A right-winger is someone who thinks a conservative is too liberal for him.

Liberals are people who want to help the poor and let people live their lives the way they want to. Conservatives are people who want to help the rich and who want to force other people to live according to their social rules.
