Question:
Why do Republicans oppose D.C.'s right to vote on most things, but support their right to vote on gay marriage?
2010-01-08 12:01:33 UTC
37 Republicans from the House and 2 from the Senate are trying to intervene in a lawsuit, and pushing efforts to put D.C.'s recently-passed gay marriage law up for public vote.

That's rich............considering:
Both Sens. James M. Inhofe (Okla.) and Roger F. Wicker (Miss.) last year and 31 of the House Republicans in 2007 voted AGAINST D.C. voting rights.

Because they are hypocrites and want a public vote hoping that will cancel the City Council's action. But they would never allow a referendum on DC becoming a state, because they are racist and they fear more congressional Democrats would be elected

Uh... you are aware, are you not, that D.C. was not given any representatives or senators because per the Constitution, it was to be administered directly by Congress? It would require a constitutional amendment to give D.C. the same representation as states have.

So no only were the Republicans correct in preventing cloture on that bill, but it didn't matter anyway - a simple legislative bill cannot amend the Constitution.

As for the same-sex thing, well, it was the peoples' elected representatives who made this law. But I'm not sure whether they actually had the authority to do such a thing. I believe that's what is at issue. Does this issue fall under the purview of the District Council, or does it properly belong in the US Congress?

Instead of repeating an article that has some very glaring logic flaws in its criticism, perhaps you leftist "educated intellectuals" can discuss whether such decisions as same-sex marriage are properly within the D.C. Council's authority or whether it belongs within the purview of Congress. Please refer to the Constitution and any contemporaneous writing.

D.C. is not a "state", therefore it is constitutionally ineligible to have voting representatives in Congress.

The D.C. law permitting gay marriage was passed by its Liberal local governing body, but it is in violation of Federal law, and the issue of gay marriage has been voted down every time it is put to the voters.

To avoid having to challenge it in Congress, and/or in Federal courts as a violation of Federal Law, it is easier to throw it to the D.C. voters and let them vote it down.

In D.C. representatives do the voting, when it comes to things like gay marriage the voting is done personally.

LOL, not even close to the same thing. the first one has to do with letting the people vote on an issue, the second one has to do with giving them representation in Congress. There's a reason why D.C. is not a state and it parallels the reason for not giving them votes in Congress: Because they would would ALWAYS get preferential treatment over all other states.

because they are hypocrites.........

They support the people's right to vote..........ONLY if the vote does something in their own favor.

They don't want D.C. to have representation in congress because they know they are liberal.
