Question:
Do you think Palin's daughter deserved the joke?
2009-06-14 08:44:05 UTC
I'm Republican and a supporter of Sarah Palin, but I think the joke David Letterman cracked about Palin's daughter was deserved. She's only 18, got knocked up, and is an unwed mother. It's really just the cold hard truth.

Where did Sarah go wrong in her daughter's upbringing?

It was the 14 year old daughter that went to the game from my understanding and no she didn't deserve the joke. It's not very nice.

No girl deserves to be the target of such a disgusting joke. It is obvious that Letterman was referring to Palin's 14 year old since she was the only daughter with Palin. You are helping Letterman try to excuse his disgusting behavior by repeating the lie that the 18 year old was the target, something that is totally false, and even if Letterman's lie were true, joking about the rape of any woman is disgusting.

I don't believe you are a Republican or a Palin supporter.

If you are a Republican and a Palin supporter, I can only assume you either young, not a mom or your children are grown and you lucked out.

I don't think the issue is whether she deserved the joke, because I don't think that way. But if I did think this way, there are a whole ton of sleazy politicians I could pick for my humor fodder, before I need to start picking on their kids.

Here's the problem with the Republican Party: we/you're not very forgiving of mistakes that people tend to make. The Dems will have the upper hand over us until we start being more accepting of people who are flawed and don't meet our ideal. Sarah Palin's daughter chose to not have an abortion; she's trying to take care of her child by herself. No, it's not an ideal situation, but you can't be both pro-life and anti-unwed mother. This isn't to say that people shouldn't be held responsible for their actions, it's just to say that you need to care about people even when they make mistakes; especially when they're trying to make them right.

Often a parent does a good job raising their children, but their children make mistakes when it comes to making decisions. This happens all the time. That's how we learn in life, through trail and error. There isn't a road map on how to raise children and parents do the best they know how.

I'm not a Palin supporter, but I do know that it's a hard job being a parent. It's so easy to be critical of others when your not in their shoes. And none of us are perfect.

The joke was about the 14 year old, not the 18 year old, no matter what Letterman contends. Letterman should be fired and you are no supporter of Sarah Palin. Give me a break...

Sooo... If someone screws up in their personal life, the national media should mock them. Wow--I'd better watch my step!! Especially if you are a woman. "Got" knocked up? What about the loser father who could just as easily have put on a condom??? Where's the jokes for that one? The cold hard truth is that Letterman lost viewers due to the recent NBC late-night programming change. This was just his way of drawing attention back on himself. He knew it was a controversial topic. I don't condone teen pregnancy, but congrats to her for not having an abortion. That's coming from a Republican Palin-supporter.

Her parents didn't "go wrong" anywhere. It happens all the time to young people. And she's handling it very well. No, Letterman is obviously a fool. Reaching that far to make a funny, shows that someone isn't really good at comedy. I am NOT going to judge what went on in the Palin household, but they certainly seem to be a loving family. It's nobody's business and has nothing to do with politics.

Sarah Palin is just embarrassed about the truth and that the truth is so loud. As they say, the truth hurts. Plus she will do anything to stay in the news.

Yes the joke was okay. Comedians have taken pot shots at politicians and their families for a hundred years. It's their job. Sarah is the one who put all her families business on the street, therefore material for the comedians.

I didn't think the joke was particularly funny, but I support his right to MAKE the joke.

Arnold Schwartzenegger was an actor for many years prior to going into politics and becoming Governor of Caliornia. He married into one of the most famous families in America.

I could not tell you how many children Arnold has or any of their names. He does not line them up for publicity shots or make them go on the circuit giving speeches about abstinence.

I don't know if Sarah went wrong in bringing up Bristol. At some point the child has to take responsibility for their own behavior no matter what you teach them.

No girl or woman deserves to be joked about that way.

Some people here think that Bristol's having had a child out of wedlock makes comments from dirty old men all right. It does not.

There is some sort of primitive attitude coming out here, showing that U.S. culture is not as respectful of woman as some say it is.

Having a child out of wedlock is not nearly as bad as abusing a woman because she had a child out of wedlock. What's next? Public stonings?

Palin's daughter did nothing criminal, unlike Tipper and Al Gore's son. But I don't see the jokes about the Gore's kid even though Tipper was very much out there pushing 'family values', even lobbying congress for warning labels on CD's. Likewise, where's the late night jokes about Biden's daughter being arrested multiple times for drugs?
2009-06-14 08:53:30 UTC
Why not ask Lettermans girl friend, you know, the one he got pregnant and didn't marry.

Look, it was a mother taking her daughter to a ballgame. That is not an invitation for either of them to be abused in the media. Children, especially 14 year old children, are not targets for cheap political darts. You people won, get over it.

It is interesting to see a bad winner. What the heck is with that?
2009-06-14 08:49:17 UTC
I thought the joke was directed at Sarah Palin's younger, 14-year old daughter, who as far we know isn't sexually active yet. Still, I don't think the Obamas deserve all of the Nazi comparisons conservative media is making. I believe people who are making a big fuss over the Letterman joke are being very two-faced in their outrage.
2009-06-14 08:54:26 UTC
The joke was about the daughter but was aimed at showing the hypocrisy of what sarah palin says and what she seems to idolise.

American traditional values, with policies such as no sex ed and views on marriage etc.

Clearly she stands for these things yet she has a teenage daughter knocked up who is unmarried.

Palin also had her daughter young.

It is palins drive to enforce these views on other people yet fail to adhere and make her family adhere to them herself.

That is what the joke was aimed at.

She didn't until she started preaching that abstinance is a real option. If you stay in the limelight you have to take what comes.

She is very typical of a child of a dysfunctional family.

This is the era of false indignation from both sides.

This whole issue is nuts. The sooner the world stops pretending that teens don't have sex, the sooner we can accept the facts of life and deal with it.

Yes, teenagers have sex, and when you have sex, you can get pregnant. Bristol Palin got pregnant, and its news? That's not news, it happens all the time. The only reason its news is that they wanted to use it against her politician mother. I'm not sure if David Letterman has a daughter or not, but I bet at 17 years old she'd be having sex too.

I'm a Democrat and I don't think there is any point in making a bad situation worse. Shes an unwed teen mom and shes had to do it in front of millions of people. That's not her fault, or Lettermans, her mom should have said thanks but no thanks to McCain, then the country wouldn't have cared and there wouldn't have been any jokes. But its the old hypocrisy thing, Palin espouses a hard line abstinence only program despite seeing for herself that it doesn't work worth a darn.

Palin saying that Letterman is a pedophile is really nasty. He isn't, and that's slanderous, her daughter is giving talks on abstinence with her baby on her lap, well that's stupid too, and true.

First of all, it was the 14 years old, the one that was with her mother at Yankee Stadium, so the joke was directed to her, and even if he was referring to the 18 years old, it was wrong, because se has nothing to do with politics. Her private life is off limits.

No, don't think so.

If you've ever been a young woman who thinks you're in love with a guy who you think will be your love and salvation for life, and you're immature and totally smitten with the guy, then put yourself in the back seat of a car, where this guy is giving you his entire undivided attention and lust masked under words of love, then trust me, you won't be thinking about your mother and the great upbringing she has given you.

Have you heard that Joe Biden repeatedly attempts to knock up Malia and Natasha Obama when Obama and his gorilla leave the White House?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

Oh, that's SO funny!!! Don't you agree?

If you support Letterman's joke, you must condone child rape!

So my little joke about the Obama daughters must have you rolling in the aisle!

Correct?? Be consistent now.......

No the joke was off taste but Palin trying to politicize it was even worst .After all it mostly Palin fault for putting the media right in her living-room . She never stop in parading her kids in her campaign and on tv interviews so if there anyone who the blame it should be Palin for exploiting her children's for political gain.

I'm thinking that you folks are not so much bothered by Letterman as it is likely that most cons never watch that show but they just love to talk about Palin. Interestingly enough talking about her in a way that makes her gossip material lowers her stature as a politician.

Palin's daughter getting pregnant and being unmarried is a refutation of her conservative preaching about abstinence before marriage. The hypocrisy and ignorance of the Palin clan will become a forgotten footnote soon. Better minds and moral people are readily available.

The Palin's aren't good parents. They did not provide sex education, contraceptives nor did they offer pregnancy termination. Bristol was 16 when she was having unprotected sex. Bad parenting, bad ideology.
