Question:
Why are conservatives so hypocritical when it comes to marriage?
2009-05-14 12:38:54 UTC
They will consistently refer to the Bible to stop same-sex couples from marrying, but never refer back to the same source and stop divorce.

According to the Bible, God hates divorce. So, why are you against gay marriage and not divorce?

And if tradition is so important, why do we go back to the classical marriage which was arranged by the parents for business purposes?

Since you want to change the definition of marriage, would you be ok with 3 or more people getting married to each other?

The Bible does not condone either one, and neither do I. I don't thin divorces are right. I believe that if you marry, you should be married for life. You should take your time getting to know the person, so you know what you're getting into, and don't want a divorce later. If you must dis-join yourself from your spouse, then an annulment is the best choice. The Bible never says that you must have a marriage to a person of your parent's picking. Marriage is about love, but it is also meant to be between a man and a woman, the way God intended. I don't hate gay people though, like some people have said conservatives do.

Um, you have to be married in order to divorce. Barring an unsafe (i.e. abuse) or truly unhappy situation I'm not sure I know anyone who is "for" divorce.

BTW I'm not defending anyone who cites the Bible or any other religious reference for argument against gay marriage. I'm conservative and I couldn't care less. I lean more libertarian in this respect. I don't cite the Bible for, well, anything.

Christians are against divorce, but they gotta work on one at a time. First comes the marriage part, then comes how marriage works.

Classical and Christian aren't the same thing, read the NT and see.

BTW I am against gay marriage but I don't hate gays at all, I have nothing against them. I would be open to the idea of a union (not resulting in benefits but still recognized, since benefits should come with the ability to make kids and contribute to society etc.) but not marriage.

I'm against gay marriage and divorce. So clearly you are just silly and don't know what you're talking about.

If i could vote to pass a bill that would stop heterosexual couples from getting drunk and married one day and divorced a week later- i totally would. But I can't- so i'll just keep voting against gay marriage instead.

Personally, I am against divorce.

If you knew anything about the bible, though, you'd know there ARE in fact, grounds within the bible for divorce. An example is adultery.

What cracking me up is that many people that voted against gay marriage voted for Obama and that the president himself has stated he doesn't support it. Neither would be considered conservatives.

You make good points.

I on the other hand think that marriage as in a word itself should be solely for the opposite marriage and union for the same.

It's a new age and time. They have changed drastically and therefore should not be interpreted as the exact same thing.

I'm a conservative....I have never referred to the Bible to restrict anything. And I support gay marriage. I also support divorce - some people just make bad decisions.

You're right. I'm a conservative and I don't get the gay marriage thing. Only the religious have such convictions about it. Not all of us cons. are religious.

My one beef is with Obama. He and Biden DO NOT support gay marriage, and yet it is us conservatives who take all the crap for it. Ask Obama why he doesn't support it!!

Divorce does not alter the DEFINITION of marriage. You can't make a word mean whatever you want it to mean.

You can't lay around the trailer park watching Springer all day and call it "work."

You can't sleep around with everyone and call it abstinence.

You can't think 2+2 equals five, become an engineer, and expect your buildings to stand and your airplanes to fly.

The DEFINITION of marriage is one man, one woman. Go around believing words don't have definitions, see how long civilization lasts.

Their hate for gays ...

They are different so they have to hate them

Even if I am pro-gay, two dudes with mustaches kissing each other is REALLY not my thing ... but, that's my biased personal OWN belief and it's irrelevant ... all that matters is the right thing to do, not my feelings

Why stop at marriage, they are hypocritical about everything. It isn't there fault. It is hard to be virtuous when you make natural human behavior a sin.

This is just another issue that reflects from the problems that politicians refuse to tackle

Oh coyote, here we go again.

Gay divorce is greater in its propensity than straight divorce, because they do not belong together! They are just confused beings! Great people some of them, but let's talk physiology and psychology... not Theology.

The bible is full of contradictions. So is it any surprise that its followers are too?

Hambone..you're going down a slippery slope. Not to mention, animals =/= gay people.

Are you for or against sex with animals?

Why are you so dense that you cannot understand that this issue crosses all political boundaries?
