Question:
Liberals: We all know the electoral college is bad but can we address the elephant in the room and acknowledge the Senate is worse?

Think about it, Wyoming get's too much power with respect to states like California's population in the electoral college, which is how Trump stole Hillary's victory. BUT in the Senate Wyoming has EQUAL representation as California. How in the world is that Democracy? How is that right? We all know from history that the Senate was a compromise to pass the constitution well I say that was over 200 years ago and it's time we rethink what the slave holding founders thought and make our society finally democratic and justified by abolishing the Senate and only having the House of Representatives.

And yes Cons this is fair because Wyoming, Montana, and Alaska are still represented in the House they just won't be over represented as they are now and will finally nd we can finally have a truly just society where Democracy, not Trump fascism, reigns you bigots

The Senate exists to defend the interests of states in the Union. Do States, as equal partners in the Union, not get an equal voice in how laws are debated and passed in Washington?

The real reason you complain is that you have trouble to get things done your way, which you explicitly state at the end of your comment. That is not a recipe to nurture cooperation. People seldom agree on everything, but the bare minimum a society needs is an agreement of principle about how disputes and conflicts should be handled. This is one thing I appreciated about Rawls' veil of ignorance: the thought experiment propose to pick how to handle problems without taking into account of the specifics of your life as a means to identify just principles.

As for conservatives, the majority of them are just like the majority of liberals: they just work, spend time with relatives and friends and they aren't too bothered by politics in their every day life. That is the bulk of people. And a sizable portion of those people aren't peculiarly wed to any party. In 2016, they picked the outlier, probably because he looked different and they were fed up with what everyone else was doing.

Trump is not a dictator and it is insulting to the memories of the Holocaust to compare him to a Nazi or any other type of fascist. Yes, he says stupid things every now and then and, yes, he lies almost like he breathes. However, through all the nonsense, he does stand for a set of concerns no one else was willing to address: (1) he won't apologize for being offensive and politically incorrect; (2) he does want to reform immigration and tackle the problem of illegal immigration; and (3), he is not wedded to the principle of free trade and made it clear he wants to twist a few more hands to defend the interest of the middle class and poorer citizens who have been footing the bill of free trade agreements and bad immigration policies for the past 30 years.

What you get when you look down on people and try to tell them that their pain is not real is Donald Trump. He even attracted some Sanders voters, by the way, so it is not the story of a mob movement driven by greed and racial hatred that you see here. It's not even about either party being too far right or too far left. It's ordinary people being fed up...

Will you listen, will you do something about it? My guess is, to my great disappointment as a left leaning person, most politicians will not get the message. People on the left will continue to pander to nonsense and play the identity card for some more time. When your response to any talk about social issues is 'here is the reasonable, appropriate response' and anyone who dissents is a bigot, a racist, an homophobe, a xenophobe or an islamophobe, how can you learn anything? You are telling everyone to shut up. Read your comment ten times around and tell me it is not condescending.

I am saying this, just in case someone pays attention because the message carried by the left traditionnally is for the little guy and the little girl of this world that have trouble and are being ignored by society and it is important that this message is heard. However, when you are insulting everyone, it just doesn't work.

The senate and House of Rep are really a compromise made by the founding fathers. Some believed population should be the deciding factor, and others believed that that could not be a fair system because the most populated states would hold the most power. That is how the system we have today came to be.

The senate is important to protect the interests of the smaller states and ensure that they get a fair deal as well. If a bill ever comes to pass that would benefit California greatly but destroy the economy of a smaller state like Rhode Island, the bill can be blocked in the senate and the people of that state can push for a fair deal. With this system both the Senate and the House have to compromise to create a law. While larger states have a greater say in the House, a bill that would be detrimental to a less populated state can still be blocked.

Is the system we have the best one possible? Maybe not, but as things stand the Senate is crucial for protecting the citizens of smaller states.
