Question:
Why do libertarians have the highest average IQ of every party?
2012-02-26 16:47:28 UTC
it's well established that libertarian republicans have the highest IQ in the party, and same goes for libertarian democrats.

independents also tend to be libertarian, and have higher than average IQ's.

If you read famed Harvard psychologist Steven Pinker's book "The better angels of our Nature," he talks about I.Q, and how high I.Q. people value autonomy more than low I.Q. people do (you will find the academic research backing this up in the appendix). Since libertarianism (classical liberalism) places the highest value on autonomy of all the political philosophies, it should thus come as no surprise that high I.Q. people are drawn to libertarianism. It should further come as no surprise that the low I.Q crowd is drawn to collectivity, however you label it, as autonomy forces them to confont their own inadequacy and self-doubt. The "men of words" (writers/priests/professors/etc.) are drawn to the vulnerability of those on the left because the insecure will yield to whatever these "men of words" say, thus providing such "men of words" greater status, which is a primary driver of human motivation. Much "compassion" talk is anything but. It's just a pathway to acquire status from those too dopey to know what's going on.

No study I'm aware of that establishes this claim ... two or three studies showing individuals with liberal inclinations tend to have higher IQ's, but this entire line of reasoning runs along the lines of the ad hominem fallacy.

Assuming you're a Libertarian, I suggest you live up to that intelligence stereotype by capitalizing your sentences and understanding the use of apostrophes when it comes to plural nouns (it's "IQs").

By the way, your sources are a blog, and a website called "bleeding heart libertarians." Not exactly scientific evidence either way.

I would imagine that figure came from an organization that focused primarily on math skills.

Libertarians also include a preponderance of people who suffer from Asperger's syndrome with is a mental condition associated with a high level of mathematical ability.

Although I can't verify whether or not your statement is true but if it is my guess would be because we (in general) have done the research and don't rely on what the media tells us because, quite frankly, the media hates us. And logically in order to be that way one is more than likely pretty educated. You have to keep in mind though that being "educated" doesn't necessarily equate to being right about things as "education" from both public and private schools often serves as a means of indoctrination as well. A lot of us also tend to know a lot about economics which is how many often get involved with libertarianism in the first place (through studying economics).

A mistake people often make is in saying that we're socially liberal (well, we are just not in the modern sense of the word). Being labeled "socially liberal" draws false connotations about our social philosophy. We're more pro-gun than mainstream Republicans and don't favor regulations about what you can and cannot buy like what the Democrats often try and do by forcing green technology on the populace among many other socially restrictive policies that cause unintended harm. Many of us are also pro-life like myself. We're also far more fiscally conservative than Republicans because many of us want to shrink government size and spending to the extreme to the point in which we can abolish the federal income tax. We also are, in general, not fond of the Federal Reserve unlike the Dems and Reps.

Libertarianism is not exactly a black and white ideology.

Causality is most likely reversed in this case. It is because these people are smart that they hold libertarian political views. I personally believe that intelligent, educated individuals are less likely to identify with a single political party because they are less likely to be persuaded by propaganda and other dirty political trickery to get people to vote one way or the other.

Because statistically, economic/fiscal right-wingers and social liberals (civil libertarians) tend to have vastly higher IQ than economic left wingers and bigots. So it would follow logically that more libertarian people will have statistically higher IQ.

Atheists also tend to have higher IQ.

why are Modern Whigs the best third party?

why haven't the American people realized Reps and Dems have screwed them over so many times?

Sounds to me like libertarians are the most likely to make grandiose and self-flattering claims unsupported by sources or reality, and then ignore requests for evidence and congratulate one another on the self-compliment.

Which, actually, would be pretty consistent with what I've seen on this site :)

I tend to find people with ULTRA high IQs have very little common sense. I've also found that Libertarians have very little common sense. So I guess you're making sense.

i have seen nothing to validate this,, and am one of the biggest political junkies you'll likely meet..

i have found quite the opposite.that those leaning right and libertarian have shown the lowest IQ scores...

b/c they cannot grasp the greater needs of the society they live in...rather, they are only ABLE to focus on immediate wants and needs...

and the lower the IQ, and closer the ties to conservatism..the higher the risk of a bigoted mind...

this much has been documented...

cite your source please? i will be glad to read it...w/out critique...

(edit)

neither link you provided showed research...of any klind...both were op/eds ...
