Actually, the second amendment explicitly says that gun use should be regulated. It's actually much clearer on this than other amendments, which mostly use pretty blanket language in establishing rights. And yet, everyone accepts that there are limits to, for example, the right to speech. It's only with guns that we pretend that we can't regulate it to ensure that other rights, such as the right to life, are protected.

Many gun advocates recently have pointed out "Well, cars kill people, too, so should we outlaw cars?" Here's the thing: with cars, we have passed laws making it illegal to drive while drinking or on drugs, requiring the use of seatbelts, making sure all cars and all drivers are registered and all drivers pass a driving and informational test, requiring people to carry insurance, requiring the auto companies to make cars safer with features like air bags, making drivers accountable for unsafe driving both economically and legally, setting safe speed limits, etc. And these laws have greatly reduced fatal car accidents and made our highways safer.



So what would be wrong with passing similar laws to make guns and gun use safer?

But I’m sure everyone knows that that step is gonna be a lot bloodier than the other ones. No one will give them up. Anyone who buys a gun, does it because they wants to. If you don’t like guns you don’t buy them. You expect all these owners to let go of their beautiful firearms? No. Inconceivable. The government is scared man.
