Question:
why are gun owners ashamed to have public records about them published?

Oh, the irony. Gannett's Journal News, which you'll remember published an interactive map of people with handgun permits in two counties north of New York City, has turned to armed guards to keep it safe. In an article titled "The Journal News Is Armed and Dangerous," the Rockland Times cites a Dec. 28 police report establishing that the Journal News is employing armed security guards at the newspaper’s Rockland County headquarters through at least today.

The police reports explain that the paper's editor was worried by the amount of "negative correspondence" it had received, in the form of calls and emails. The Times adds that the paper's plans to add a map of Putnam County permit-holders may have been foiled; officials there say they do not plan to comply with the Journal News' request for the info needed to create the map

Not that gun-owners are 'ashamed', but why is this a set-back for everyone?

1. Homes with guns may be robbed to gain access to guns.

1. Homes withOUT guns may be robbed, - they have no defense.

We're not.

It isn't really news, and it creates a potential for crime. The public's interest isn't served in any way by the article, but it does make it easy for gun owners homes to be targeted by criminals. Alternatively, it identifies people who can be targeted who are not armed. Either way, it was a stupid, poorly conceived move.

Here is some more public information too!

So what you're saying is that you want a list of every ladies who has been raped. Abortions is not the equal thing as guns you can't evaluate apples and oranges also what would the intent of a record one and all who has had a abortion? The rationale of a list of every person who has a gun is lovely clear SO which you can hinder those folks but what's going to you do with the list of one and all who has had a abortion? It isn't free to make that style of record but we all know you will under no circumstances desire a abortion you will certainly not get raped you seem like a hippo

The Journal created an interactive "sex-offender" style map on the internet. They intend to force law abiding citizens to wear the scarlet letter of a "gun-nut" simply for purchasing a pistol.

I am a journalist and I feel that the Journal's behaviour is petty and wreckless. They are endangering the lives of New Yorkers and their own staff and Frankly should be sued blind. There is something called Journalistic integrity and responsibility- the Journal has neither.

I am a Democrat and an avid hunter. I own about 15 guns. I have no problem with registering all of my guns but I do not feel a list of those registrations should be made public. It should be kept for strictly local, state, or federal police purposes.

Did it ever occur to you that not everyone who owns a gun is some Rambo type para-military wannabe? For instance, besides folks just wanting to lead a peaceful, quiet life, you have women dealing with stalkers and ex-husbands/boy friends... You have cops and ex-cops who worry that some convict they helped put away may come after them and their families... You have people in the witness protection system.

These people are on that list too! Do you think that is fair??

Because it makes your home now a target for those that want illegal guns. Might as well just buy them for them now and make a profit.

Time to electrify the gun safe and leave the door unlocked. Don't forget to put a metal plate on the floor because they will sue you if they survive.

Why the hypocrisy...that "news" group just hired a bunch of gun toting security guards to watch over them..

I do not agree with making lists public. On the other hand, I am a proud (multiple) gun owner and not afraid to say so!

It's not shame. Some of the gun onwers listed were battered women who were hiding from their abusers.

Would you like to have all of your contact information listed on an interactive map?

It's not shame. It's a matter of privacy which was SUPPOSED to be upheld by our government. Under Obama, we're not supposed to have any privacy.

Because some of these people are victims of violent crimes and don't want to be found...hence why they own a gun..

It's not about shame. Everyone has their right to privacy. Hence the phrase "mind your business and you won't be minding mine"

what the hell was the original point of publishing a map like that anyway???

Obama supporting criminals that want guns to commit crimes, (did you know that there are laws against commiting crimes...they don't work real well) will know where to try to steal them.

Not ashamed at all, just wondering how it's any of your business what I lawfully own? There is NO public right to know after all.

Ok, then can I have a sign in my yard stating that my neighbor supports gun bans?

If your looking for an explination. Your not worth the time to waste it on.

Because now robbers know who to hit for free guns and who not to.

Also who is armed and who isn't.

That's what set me off.
