I know the oil spill in the gulf is terrible (I would know, I live in Alabama), but is it realistic for someone to stop supporting oil companies? I mean I dont know of any other way of transportation (besides walking and riding a bike) that wouldnt require oil. So was wondering is it realistic to stop supporting oil companies, what is yur opinion of the oil spill, what yu think should be done, ect. I want opinions and facts. Thanks.

No, the only ones that would stop supporting oil companies , must live in a cave and ride a horse, to stop using oil , would be the same as the cowboys in the old west, shooting their horses and hanging around 40 years, waiting on the automobile to be invented************************************************

It's impossible. In order to not support oil companies in any way, you would have to stop using all of the following:

Anyone is free to do what they want. If you are able to make your way through life without oil, then have at it. It is not just unrealistic, but virtually impossible unless you want to go out in the wilderness and totally live off the land. Even if you ride your bike to the grocery store, the stuff you buy was almost certainly delivered to the store by a truck which ran on gasoline.

I agree this oil spill is terrible. Oil itself is a great thing though. It has revolutionized society and improved the lives of virtually everyone in the industrialized world. If a plane crashed and killed 300 people, you would say that's terrible, but you probably wouldn't say planes are terrible and vow to never fly again.

I say study hard and become an engineer and either develop safer ways to obtain oil or come up with an alternative that is cheap, plentiful, safe and reliable. That would be a much better use of your time than riding around the woods on a bicycle.

There are thousands of drilling platforms in the gulf and something like this has only happened once including this leak. Lets figure out if this was preventable and if so take steps to prevent it in the future. We should also look at drilling on land where an oil leak is easy to stop and clean up, and closer to shore so we don't have the extreme complications associated with fixing an oil leak a mile under water.

No ... of course not ... but it's time for them to pull their heads in big time!

The big powerful oil lobbyists should be completely banned from Congress!

Over the course of 8 presidencies ... Democrat and Liberal ... the very powerful oil lobby groups have stopped the government financing and allowing proper research into clean renewable energy sources as it's not in their interest for us to stop being totally dependent on oil.

I can't believe that the country which developed the first airplanes, were first to land Man on the Moon plus other countless inventions which have benefitted us AND the rest of the world can't create a clean, cheap renewable form of energy.

We would then not be dependent on the whim of big oil businesses and other countries ... and we could still use oil at a much lesser rates for the byproducts such as plastic etc!

BP has a bad reputation even within the oil industry. Just think there are over 3,000 oil rigs in the gulf of Mexico and just one blew up, because executives decided to take a short cut. My question is WHY haven't we (our stupid current & past presidents) built nuclear plants like they are doing in Europe? This would help to less our dependence on Saudi and oil.

uh........no.

I'm not saying we aren't heavily addicted to oil. Not saying this addiction isn't threatening our long term viability.

But the fact of the matter is we need an ALTERNATIVE way to fuel society. You can't just pass a Cap&Trade bill pretend like you solved a problem and ignore that we still don't have another way to do what we do.

Also, I agree wholeheartedly that HEMP is possibly the answer to this problem. It's easy to grow, It grows fast and it grows EVERYWHERE.

You could definitely create some kind of hemp/petroleum hybrid and eventually try to develop a fully hemp based fuel. (Henry Ford actually used hemp based ethanol for his first Model-T)

Yes , industrial hemp could replace oil in a few years, but killing the planet is better for short term profit, so they won't do it.

Outline of the benefits and uses of hemp

*

Biomass Hemp

o

As a biomass, hemp burns hotter and cleaner than coal.

o

Hemp biomass can be converted to methane or methanol.

*

Hemp Paper

o

Industrial hemp makes better paper than wood (the US Constitution was printed on hemp).

*

Hemp Oils

o

Hemp produces oils which can replace synthetic solvents for a wide range of uses, including paints and paint thinners.

*

Clothing from hemp

o

Hemp fibers can be woven into extremely durable clothing material.

*

Grows easily

o

Hemp can be grown organically in poor soil almost anywhere, up to three crops per year, far more efficient than lumber.

o

Hemp is naturally drought, pest, and disease resistant, eliminating the need for synthetic chemicals and reducing the demand on dwindling water supplies.

Oil companies support themselves first thats the problem. Some Libs only want to prevent deep oil drilling

The oil companies would do well if they did their part to develop alternative energy.

No. Not unless you can find a substitute for plastic and everything else that's made from oil.

yes, the oil companies have made sure there are no alternative energies.. when the battery technology for an electric car was invented, they bought the patent, and SHELVED it
anonymous
2010-06-25 15:45:32 UTC
Yes, correct. Until we have a viable, cost effective alternative to oil, we have to use it.

And the so-called green energy sources are years from being viable alternatives. I love oil. I love going fast in my V8 car, etc.

And as long as this is America, no idiot in D.C. is going to force me to stop using oil.

the 1st element we could do is stop reproducing.the international is getting very crowded.we are utilising up earth supplies very speedy to feed the masses. As we use it up we produce greater pollution.maximum folk do not decide directly to break their life type,so pollution will proceed till it covers us up.each and every-time the government needs to bypass pollution rules the masses upward push up and scream" get out of our life's".So stay with it till it consumes us.

Not unless you know of some secret new energy source. Cause I am coming up blank.
