Is it possible we were never real enemies and the military industrial complex has instigated this conflict to spend both countries into a cold war. Was this based on mistrust only? I always wondered what the hell the Soviet Union would want with another piece of land with pissed off enemies at every turn. We would never give up and they would do the same for their country. It would have been too expensive to occupy all 12 time zones and they could not occupy our 5. This was never a practical outcome. All that money and all those warheads for nothing. They dont want us and we do not want them. How sad if this is true.

Does the Eastern Bloc and the Soviet Union mean anything to you? Once the Soviets broke up, all those countries broke off, how many of them remained communist?

Korea. Cuba. French Indochina that turned into Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. You do know north Vietnam was backed by the Soviets, South Vietnam by the Americans, right? And then there's Afghanistan.

And we haven't even addressed China, which is another faction all together.

Man. I think you must have missed out on Cold War History.

If you didn't live through the 50s, 60s, 70s, or 80s and you were educated by American teachers union schools, you might think the Soviets were non-threatening. Did you know they invaded many of their neighbors...Poland, Hungary, Czechoslavakia, and Afghanistan, moving toward a warm water port. They were not the benign enemy you portray.

You have a liberal mindset..same as Carter. He had no concept of the evil in a dictator's mind, which made him incompetent to lead the USA.

I am old enough to remember the Russians tanks rolling into Budapest after all the registered guns had been confiscated. The citizens were throwing rocks at the tanks. Hungary, Poland, and the eastern block were under the Russian jackboots. What do you mean there was no imperialist goals by the Soviets. One of the main creeds of Marxism is world domination. Name one country that the U.S. has taken. We have never taken nor kept one square foot of any other countries territory except to bury our dead in our fight to free others.

Everyone more than dimly aware of the Soviet Union's existence KNOWS they displayed imperialist goals. One particularly supposes the people in their numerous "client States" probably thought so.

Lets see, if I remember correctly, Jimmy Carter imposed an embargo on grains against the Soviet Union.

They both displayed imperialist goals, regardless of motivations, it was imperialist by the very nature of expanding control to other regions. Yes it was probably based on mistrust, but it was imperialist nonetheless. Certainly they would benefit from expansion regardless because you would have more control and more access to resources
