Exit plan?

Tell me, how do you set up an exit plan for a war? This seem to be a big talking point for many Dems. It seems to me that any exit plan is an excersice in futility. Unless you can see the future, trying to set up an exit plan will fail every time due to changing circumstances and evolving conditions within a war situation.

By the way can anyone name any instance where a government went to war with an exit strategy?

Did it come close to working?

All battle plans have to be flexible to succeed. Trying to set your feet on a predetermined path is an invitation for defeat.

A good commander, General down to PFC, should have a plan to disengage from any battle. Disengaging is not retreating it is breaking contact with the enemy. The Democrats criticize the plan of the war in Iraq with no plan of their own. Run like hell is not a plan. If they can come up with a better plan I am sure the Generals would more than happy to look at it.

The main flaw in the poster's thesis is comparing this particular war to any other war. This one is unique. First, it's a war that shouldn't have happened. Second the 'reasons' for the war revolve around western control of middle east oil and the economic interests of the US oil industry. Fourth, the differences between Sunni and Shiite are unlike anything we've had in the west since the wars between the protestants and catholics. In short, there is no good way to deal with the situation that the Bush administration has gotten us into. Like the Tar Baby story in Uncle Remus, we're stuck. Worse, the Bush Junta has already lost this war. To solve any problem, first you have to admit there is a problem..Bush and company are not going to do that. So, until the Bush administration is out of office we're screwed. After Bush is gone we're going to have to either formulate an exit plan or a institute a draft because this war will become institutionalized with no natural stopping place.
