Question:
Mississippi has the highest percentage of religious people and conservatives. They also have the LOWEST IQ. Is this a coincidence?
2016-05-05 14:33:15 UTC
In an independent study by a London based organization, more liberal areas like the Northeast and Western areas all have significantly higher IQ's than more conservative and religious areas like the South and Midwest. Just look it up in Google Images, you can see the map. Places like Delaware and Massachusetts all have average IQ's in the between 100 and 110, while Southern, mostly Christian states like Mississippi have an average IQ in the mid/ upper 80's.

Coincidence? I think not. Liberal areas also have the highest ACT and SAT scores, while some of the lowest are in the South. One county in Tennessee actually has an average ACT score of 14. Liberal areas also tend to house more atheists and agnostics, as they themselves are in general liberal, and it comes as no surprise that these areas show a higher percentage of college degrees, better colleges, higher SAT and ACT scores, and higher IQ's.

Here's a link to the IQ scores.

There is no possible way to prove the statements that you've made. Everyone in Mississippi has not taken a valid IQ test- nor have the people in the other states. If they used ACT and SAT scores, those are NOT the same as IQ tests, and not everyone takes those, either.

What is a little bit true is that people who are academically successful often move to cities where the job opportunities are greater. There are no major cities in Mississippi.

Now- if you'd like to talk about the average IQ of their state legislators, I would not argue with you that they are less intelligent than most people, anywhere in the US!

I would classify the citizens of Mississippi as Religious Conservatives. I would classify them as social/fiscal moderates. The real problem with classification today, is that each faction/party has 5 or 6 major platform points. Very few people on either side meet all 5-6 points. Myself, I am a Religious Moderate, a social moderate, and a fiscal moderate. I believe in balance in all areas. Balance creates thought and discussion. Those two factors are what move issues and people along. when you have two sides unwilling to even have a discussion, it's impossible to find any common ground. No common ground means no movement toward solutions. That's why we have floundered for the past 15 years. It isn't important to always be 100% right. Sometimes it's better to be 80% right, and discover the other 20% from someone else.

Your proof studies, stats and polls mean nothing ... I don't need a study to know you're STUPID as is any one like you ... ROFL !!

If that were all true so what. Do you see any colleges in rural areas? Statistics mean nothing when you have no ability to figure why they are what they are. Here are some other things that your question show you will never be able to accept or determine.

Contrary to the widely held liberal opinion the national debt is not a good thing. Social Security left as is will go bankrupt. Rural areas can survive without the support of urban areas but the reverse is not true. When it all hits the fan nobody will want to be in the urban areas and intruders will not be welcomed to rural areas with open arms.

Hmmm.....I wonder. What else does Mississippi have a lot of?

Oh yeah, it has the highest percentage of black population by far!

Is this a Coincidence?

Sorry bub. You are the one that walked straight into that trap. You blame two groups of people, namely Conservatives and religious people, when it is entirely likely that state IQ level is so low because of that 3rd group we mention.

UPDATE: Hey DUMMY, did you actually read the text that went along with that table? It said the Economist, which carried that article, later issued a retraction and provided a link to that retraction. The retraction in the Economist said they were the victim of a hoax, and no such data existed.

Try again with a reliable, recent source of information. Ignorant folks like yourself are the real problem in this country. All you want to do is post ignorant hate filled questions based upon unsubstantiated sources such as this one you have cited simply in a pathetic attempt to attack people who do not agree with your skewed views of reality.

Find three other sources within the past 3 years that correlate this data. I am sure you can't. Then perhaps we might have something to talk about. Plus, it is clear that you have no concept of the true definition of conservative, liberal, independent, democrat, or republican.

If you knew or understood the definitions of each you would have phrased your ignorant statement differently. Not all conservatives are republicans. Millions of conservatives in this country identify and are registered as independents and democrats.

Try pulling your head out of your **** and get a clue, putz.

I seriously doubt that Missisipi is the most religious state of the Union, Texas and Utah and Georgia and South Carolina are as equally religious as Missisipi, It just so happens that Missisipi is probably the most anti-science and Young earth creationist state of the Union and probably ranks number 50 in the nation for education. As it turns out Young earth creationism does not necessarily predate Christianity, there is evidence of plausible scholarly debate as to how Genesis was meant to be interpreted as early as the first century BCE. You might think me to be a free thinking kook if you home browser is set to Huffington post but I'm telling you the truth.

IQ measures how much someone has mastered of a standard curriculum. Since MS does not actually require parents to send children to school and since the schools it has are very low-quality, not it's not surprising at all.

MS has produced some outstanding writers and musicians, but it's not because their education system.

Seriously, that just shows that IQ tests have a problem. People in Mississippi cannot possibly be significantly different in their average genetics than Americans as a whole.

Fun fact: Mississippi is almost half black. It's the blackest state in the country. US Blacks have average IQ's of 85 and also have the highest rates of religiosity.

c'mon now, how does London know what is going on in America. Forget the independent study. IQ is not important. However kids don't learn when they come from very poor areas like they don't get fed well or have good schools, decent transportation, etc.

Unless the study normalizes for race, the study of IQ will merely be a proxy for the racial demographics.

MIssissippi is about 45% black if I remember correctly.

Didn't most of the studies studies showing IQ tests detect nothing relevant to intelligence originate in England?

Low-income areas like Mississippi and other 'red' states also get much more aid from the federal government than they pay in federal taxes - and yet, they are the people who are most against the federal government. Blue/liberal states tend to pay more in taxes than they get back.

The low IQ scores have nothing to do with religion, many religious people have high IQ's however in the case of areas like these the people have used this as an excuse not to learn, it is easier to have someone tell them what to do. Most of these type of people you find at Trump rallies as this is his target audience as they are unable to tell when he contradicts himself and they are easy to for him to sell himself to. Trump is not stupid but rather he tells people what they want to hear rather than what he believes. He is like a used car salesman and low IQ people are his natural targets. In truth many of these so called Christians are anything but and, in fact, do not follow the teachings of Jesus but instead try to rewrite them to support their own beliefs.

Do not confuse those who believe in such things as the "Big Bang" or even evolution as being non-Christian as an intelligent Christian believes in things like this. There are many Christian scientists that work in these fields and have no issues with reconciling belief in God with scientific principles.

Due to cultural biases on the tests, IQ isn't a great way to measure intellect, but it's true that the best-educated in terms of high-school and college graduates are the Northeastern states.

Of course, true conservatives (like the guy who has the Olsen twins as his avatar) aren't interested in smart people, because they're too hard to control. They prefer church-going zombies who will do what you tell them because "it will stop the commies" or "it's gawd's will" or some such hoo-haw.

IQ numbers are not important. What matters is what people accomplish. More than 50% of Mississippians are black. Do you want to be considered racist?
