The president also complained that conservative media had created a "caricature" of him divorced from "reality" that made rallying voters from those areas particularly difficult.

"The issue has been the inability of my message to penetrate the Republican base so that they feel persuaded that I’m not the caricature that you see on Fox News or Rush Limbaugh, but I’m somebody who is interested in solving problems and is pretty practical, and that, actually, a lot of the things that we’ve put in place worked better than people might think," Obama said.

Barack Obama is a practical person interested in solving problems? Is that why he told Congress last week that he's "got a pen" and executive power he isn't afraid to use it if they don't do what he wants?

A couple things come to mind with this piece in the New Yorker.



I'm impressed with how Obama can go back to 'leftovers' of February 2009 accusations. This is exactly what he did in vilifying Limbaugh and Fox News. It's like he has not grown in the position - which shocks no one, I'm sure.



Secondly, I hope most people understand that "interested in solving problems" and being "practical" is D.C.-speak for taking action on anything that can score you political points and scratching the back of those who got you into your position of power.



But I have not answered your question. The short answer is that Obama knows that he has a certain group of communities (far-left libs, mainstream media, socialists, pro-choice, gay-rights, African-American, Latino, life-long Democrats and academics) largely in the tank for him. So, all he has to do is put out an argument that will pull in a few people who have memories of gnats and intellects of Mongo from blazing saddles to say "Hey, that big news group and fat old man are picking on this handsome cool black guy - shame on them!"
