Question:
Was it Patriotic of the War Monger Mitt Romney to skip the draft?

Like many hawkish politicians of his generation, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney managed to avoid serving in the Vietnam War through family connections. The young Romney could not use a student deferment from the draft -- having dropped out of Stanford University after only two semesters -- but avoided service anyway with the assistance of the Mormon elders.

The son of George Romney, then Michigan's governor, he was one of a limited number of Mormon youth chosen as missionaries -- a status that protected him from the draft between July 1966 and February 1969 as a "minister of religion or divinity student." Essentially, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints re-routed Romney from Vietnam to the south of France, where he lived in a Palace.

How d y'all like that then?

It saddens me...

Fortunately Mitt Romney will not be the Republican nominee. Romneycare killed his chances. We need someone who is not an Obama clone as the nominee.

You know I'm really not a big fan of Mitt's but I've grown a little tired of people equating military service with patriotism.

-In almost all instances it is patriotic to serve your country. Fighting in vietnam would not have been serving my country and therefor is not a matter of patriotism.

Same with Iraq and Afghanistan, these are not my country nor do these countries pose any credible threat to mine.

No, it was neither patriotic or unpatriotic but yes Mitt's a scumbag for skipping out.

Romney is a chicken hawk that swore during the 2008 debates he'd send the US to war over a mistaken radio message alleged to be an Iranian ship making threats to the US Navy.

the trouble with constantly changing one's image is that some of the details get in the way of a smooth transition

Romney WANTS to be hawkish right now, even though I doubt he was much of a hawk before now, because to NOT be hawkish will be reported as 'weak', but no one has asked him about his military record to back up his sabre rattling, yet

I was on active duty during Vietnam, and continued serving my country as a weekend warrior for another 20 years.

This sounds like it came from someone who has not served in the military. Another hypocrite...

There is no "military" service requirement for President of the United States.

Despite the political and even religious diatribe, most of which is innuendo and false accusations from the undereducated…

It’s still going to be about the economy and who can get the job done!

Romney knows and understands world economics. In the private sector, for most of his life, he successfully and profitably managed large companies, helped turn around large companies that were sinking and helped other companies get started, saving and creating thousands of jobs, Domino’s Pizza, Sports Authority, and Staples to name just a few of many.

Funny. Half of MA loves what Romney did, the other half hate him, maybe because he left after completing only one term. Maybe he is not a “career” politician, do you always need a “career” politician to get the job done?

Yes, he worked as the MA governor for his entire term for FREE!!! Who else would have done that!?

Yes, during his 4 years as governor MA started out ranked 49th in job creation for half of his term before moving up to 47th in his final year. Not a stellar record to some. Yet Romney also reduced corporate loopholes and cut state spending in order to cut taxes and increase consumer spending. MA had a huge deficit, about 3 Billion dollars when he started, and he left MA with a 600 million surplus and balanced budget at the end of his term (yes, he raised state “fees”, but still kept them below the national average). He can't help it if the government screwed up after he left.

MA’s super majority Democrat controlled legislature wanted desperately some kind of Universal Health care program. Romney worked with them to create one that would work, similar to mandated auto insurance (most states have such mandates). It is estimated that 98% of the residents are now covered. It was within projected budget (about 1% of the State budget) until Romney left and MA made changes to the program and now it is costing them. Romney believes that states -- not the federal government -- should be free to design their own plans for covering the uninsured if that is what they want to do.

Yes, he compromised on some political issues, again dealing with a super majority Democrat Legislature and Judicial Branch in MA, in order to keep the state government working together and moving forward.

He turned around a struggling 2002 Winter Olympics with millions in debt and made it into one of the most profitable Olympics in history. And only took a $1 dollar salary. Who else would have done that!?

He is against federalization and big government and believes in state’s rights to govern their own affairs.

He believes in marriage between a man and woman, the importance of family, and lives the example.

He is for a strong military and believes the borders should be better protected.

The list of real positives is far greater than the supposed list of negatives.

And the Democrat Party is most afraid of Romney.

It's so sad that all the rich republican princes got out of serving in Vietnam because their daddies got them special favors. People like Dick Cheney, George Bush, Dan Quayle etc. all avoided going to combat because their dad's got them special favors. Romney too. It's sad.

Listen......nobody, Republican or Democrat with a net worth of $4,000,000 or more was drafted or volunteered and ended up in Nam............all American wars are "poor Mans" wars......

After seeing my brother drafted to Vietnam and the result, I would not give my child to the government for anything. I would hide my child, and run to any country I could to protect them from war.

You can call me a "hawkish? all you wish. I call myself, "mom."
