In view of the fact that no Libdem MPs have resigned in protest seems to suggest that his 'party' is in full agreement with his unprincipled treachery!

The Libdem party, as such, no longer exists. It is now a part of Cameron's vicious, neo-Thatcherite fascist movement!

In the future, no-one except a total brain-dead would vote for someone wearing the despised label of 'libdem'

They certainly have, but none of them have the guts to come out and say it. By the time of the next election I will be astounded if Nick Clegg is still leader. It's also painful to watch a man like Vince Cable, who was so admired by many around the country, having to endorse policies that it's plain to see he doesn't agree with. The best hope the Libdems have of salvaging anything out of this is if Cable decides he's had enough and moves across the house, if he did this then I think the majority of the Libdems would follow. As for the statement about the Tories wanted to raise it to £18,000 and Clegg got it down to £9,000, what rubbish. There was no way the Tories were ever going to raise it to £18,000, like all things, if you mention a big figure and then drop it people think they have got of light, when in essence you have got what you intended. As for being able to pay it off over 70yrs and having it written off if you don't, give us a break, you finish uni at around 21yrs of age, so you are expected to pay until you're 91yrs of age. Why didn't they do it another way and have people pay the percentage they have to pay for say 25yrs, that would at least leave them 20yrs where it wasn't a debt for them.

While in Opposition, which the Liberal Party (later the Liberal Democrats) were since the 1920's, and with very little prospect of gaining power they were free to idealise and propose any policy they liked. The only possible repercussion was fewer or more seats in Parliament and perhaps in local government. After the 2010 General Election they have found that the difference between ideal and reality is as a chasm, and their idealised policies are insupportable. Fro example, the student grants pledge. That was never realistic. Faced not only with a reality check but also a crippling budget deficit and massive debts, Nick Clegg and his fellow LibDems have had to rapidly rethink their whole philosophy, and it is not pretty.

I think that they have so far been very brave, politically, in coming together with the Tories for the Country's sake. Labour was a no-hope party under Mr Brown and both he and the LibDems knew it. When the manifestos get written for the next election, General or Local, we should see some significant shifting of ground from Mr Clegg and his Party.

By the way, I am not, nor have I ever been a Lib or LibDem supporter, but I do recognise reality.

Yes I think they have, WHAT ON EARTH has Nick Clegg and the Lib Dem's achieved to their credit with this coalition as far as I can see NOTHING.

This coalition is a poisoned chalice that Nick Clegg is all to eager to drink from, the mans a fool, but he's now caught in a dilemma of his own making, does he jump or does he wait to be pushed, because as I see it the Lib Dem's are in for a pounding at the next general election.

Labour must be jumping for joy I know it could be up to four or five years until the next general election but basically all they have to do is keep cool, keep stumm (Yiddish or German - to remain silent), and bide their time, and hey-presto with a bit of luck they'll back in at number 10.

No Clegg has done the best for the party and the country as a whole. In coalition compromises have to be made and not all policies proposed before the general election can be implemented.

In a coalition there must be compromise. Nick is fighting his corner, don't worry about that. You are thinking no doubt about student fees- well, the Tories wanted to charge £18,000 but Nick and Vince got it down to just £9,000 which is almost half of what Cameron wanted and extended the repayment period to 70 years after getting a degree. How's that for strong leadership? And it was Nick's idea that if you haven't paid it all off by 70 years the balance is written off by a future government which he believes will be Lib/Dem and will not renege on a pledge.

Nick Cl egg has sold every Lib Dem principle so he can stay in power with the tories. He is now a proven liar and not to be ever trusted again imo. The Lib Dem's themselves may not feel betrayed maybe they like being in government at any price. You'll will have to ask them...

The LibDems said they would discuss coalition with the party with the largest majority. Had they formed a coalition with labour an unforgivable betrayal would have been committed. When someone goes against their word that is betrayal. It would be betrayal to buttress a finished government to vote through more profligacy that not your children or your grandchildren but their children would be left to repay.

Life is like that...We ALL say things that don't work out the wat we want. At the time of his comment, he wasn't half of a coalition party. At the time he was correct but things have moved on.
