Here is what Obama himself said about it:

"To be honest, I do not feel that I deserve to be in the company of so many of the transformative figures who have been honored by this prize."

I never thought I'd say I agreed with Obama on anything...but on this one, he's right!

I am an American and a democrat. That being said I feel that awarding this prestigious prize to someone who has not even worked on a peace treaty is miss placed. The other Three Presidents to win the award had strong diplomatic resumes

Teddy Roosevelt- The Russo Japanese war

Woodrow Wilson- The League of Nations

Jimmy Carter- The Camp David Accords.

This is how ever not the worst choice ever made that has to go to there decision to give the award to Yasser Arifat, Simon Perez and Yitsack Rabin

I think it might hurt him more unfortunately because people are talking so negatively about it. He didn't even expect it and everyone is faulting him for it.

Sounds like he is being groomed to lead the new world order, perhaps the EU and US merger.

Obama had nothing to do with his winning the prize. The voting was out of his control. He made no overtures to obtain it.. So why do the repugnants bash him for it?.. Desperation. They want Congress back in 2010 and will do or say anything to get it. This clamor and other stupidity that flows forth from their inflated, partisan, uncompromising egos will backfire. Should he have refused the prize? That would have been an insult to the committee that voted for him and further degrade the prize. He did the right thing. He said he didn't deserve it (true) and is donating the proceeds to charity. What more do you repugnants want him to do?

"Then (later) he ('the prince who is to come' ... the coming Antichrist)

shall confirm (enforce)

a covenant ('peace treaty' or 'peace plan')

with many (in Israel)

for one week (a week of years = 7 years)

But in the middle of the week

(exactly 3½ years after enforcing the 'peace')

He shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering.

(He will probably help Israel build a new Temple first)

And on the wing of abominations

shall be one who makes desolate ..." (Revelation chapters 6-20 detail the coming events of this time)

(The coming 'Apocalypse' ... the 'Great Tribulation' ... Armageddon)

(Daniel 9:27)

Daniel 9:27a

A peace treaty with Israel will usher in the Tribulation.

Revelation 17:14a

Jesus will defend Israel, conquering Israel's enemies during latter Tribulation.

Revelation 18:21b

The armies of Israel's enemies will be no more.

Revelation 19:7

Jesus will arrive, ready to marry His bride.

Revelation 19:19 - 21

The leaders of Israel's enemies will be killed.

Revelation 21:9 - 10

Jesus' bride is revealed to be the holy city of Jerusalem.

Too early. His policies towards disarmament of nuclear weapons has yet to reduce global use of nuclear weapons to a significant level. Looking also at how he "pushed for democratic principles" who hasn't done that as a president? This is what I think should happen:

Obama: Thank you so much for this award. I mean, I didn't expect to win this during my presidency. I'm real thankful that.........

Kanye: Yo Obama, I'm real happy for you and Imma let you finish, but previous Nobel Peace Prize winners have had the best reasons for winning this award of ALL TIME. OF ALL TIME!!.

Obama: Jackass...

It was stated by the Peace Prize Committee that he was awarded the Prize in recognition of the values he stood for and the accomplishments they hope he achieves during his presidency. It has been stated by members of other peace groups and coalitions who keep their collective ear to the tracks concerning these matters that the committee chose Obama for another reason, however. It is widely believed in these circles that Obama was chosen due to the low-level of political controversy it would cause in the aftermath. The committee understood that although confusion and cries of upset might be issued from the general public, on a political level he was a safe and non-confrontational choice and that within a relatively short period of time these protests would die down. Apparently some of the other nominees elected had the potential to cause strain to political ties and/or relations had they been chosen to win the prize. Another fact I'd like to point out is that Obama was only in office for about two weeks before the date of the deadline for submissions for the winner...A period which I'm sure most people will agree is far too short a time to decide upon a yet unproven president to be given such a prestigious award. Mahatma Gandhi was elected for the Peace prize five times yet never won. This is not only an embarrassment and a slap to the face of the nominees who SHOULD have been awarded the prize instead of Obama; the hundreds of individuals who EARNED the right to be called a Peace Prize recipient, it is a severe degradation of the honor and prestige of all past and future recipients as well as the moral worth of the award itself. Obama should have graciously rejected the nomination. In taking it he only cheapened both his own legacy and that of the Nobel Peace Prize. Alfred Nobel is turning in his grave (or should be).

First off I think he won the Nobel Peace Prize because of his work that he have been doing as a president and even more importantly before he was elected the president. Yes, there are a few other good candidates but he was voted the one to receive it, not because he is black or first black president or any crazy ideas people have.

Secondly all I see are ignorant people voicing negative opinions and bashing him because they only know of his work as president, you need to look into what he have been doing for the United States and Globally before you get into arguments you know absolutely nothing about. Stop letting the media (mediators) do your thinking for you and research before you speculate.

At least have the decency to give him time to work on fulfilling his promises, although all of them cannot be fulfilled think back of a president or leader that have been able to fulfilled all of what they have promised.

Just in case some did not know the criteria of receiving the bobel peace prize here it is (After reading the criteria try and find where Obama does not qualify and then you can say it was bogus or fixed.....) :

Alfred Nobel wrote in his will that the peace prize was to be given "to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between the nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing".

armies, and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses."

Nowhere there does it say he have to achieve, essentially the effort to bring peace among the nations.

I find it pretty sad that people are so against Obama getting the Nobel Peace Prize. Granted, he might not be doing things as fast as everyone wants but who can?

The republican's have messed up our country the past 8 years and NOBODY should expect Obama to be the miracle worker/savior. The fact that he has improved the world's perception of us Americans is HUGE!!!!

If you stand back and look at the comments out there, you can easily tell who does not like him...no matter what he tries to do.

Some comments within the US:

"What has President Obama actually accomplished?" said Michael Steele, chairman of the Republican National Committee.

"It is unfortunate that the president's star power has outshined tireless advocates who have made real achievements working towards peace and human rights."

GOP Rep. Gresham Barrett, who is running for governor of South Carolina, mocked Obama's prize. "I'm not sure what the international community loved best; his waffling on Afghanistan, pulling defense missiles out of Eastern Europe, turning his back on freedom fighters in Honduras, coddling Castro, siding with Palestinians against Israel, or almost getting tough on Iran,"

"What's Obama done?" asked Rick Moran in his blog on American Thinker, a strong advocate of Israel. "What peace has he negotiated? ... I suppose an organization that thought Yasser Arafat worthy of the same prize can't be taken seriously anyway. But they are."

In fact I find it funny that the above comments are similar to some of the enemies out there:

Sami Abu Zuhri, a Hamas official:

"Obama has a long way to go still and lots of work to do before he can deserve a reward. Obama only made promises and did not contribute any substance to world peace."

Zabihullah Mujahid, a Taliban spokesman:

"He has done nothing for peace in Afghanistan ... We condemn the award of the Nobel Peace Prize for Obama."

Ali Abkar Javanfekr, media aide to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad:

"We are not upset and we hope that by receiving this prize he will start taking practical steps to remove injustice in the world. If he removes the veto from the United Nations Security Council, then it shows the prize was given correctly to him."

On a level of how many people's attitudes were changed, I think he's probably been more influential than anybody else in recent times. You just take a reading of the hatred and animosity created by the former president, and then get a temperature of world after Obama replaced him, it becomes clear things improved dramatically.

I don't know how much direct credit can be given to Obama for this, however I doubt any of the other characters who ran for president could of caused such a dramatic change. It's kind like having a vicious dog that bites everybody, and replacing it with a well trained golden retriever. Maybe the retriever isn't special, but its impact on the atmosphere in that house is going to be great.

So, I'm not going to pull a Kayne West and claim Aung San Suu Kyi deserves the award more for being locked in a house. Obama was the one who got it, and instead of second guessing it, people should applaud from their seats, and hope it helps inspire him to try to make even greater strides towards peace in the world.

I may not be at par with the people that compose the very respectable Nobel but what i think is that Mr. B. Obama, as a leader of a powerful nation, is influential to the matters of peace in the global scope. His peace efforts he initiated early into his step in the office is very noble and worthy of praise as he directed a very big humanitarian decision. I believe that along with "great power" comes "great responsibility".
2009-10-10 16:58:33 UTC
He deserves it. This shows why...

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26315908/ns/msnbc_tv-rachel_maddow_show

"A 25-nation poll of 27,000 people released in July by the Pew Global Attitudes Project found double-digit boosts to the percentage of people viewing the U.S. favorably in countries around the world. That indicator had plunged across the world under President George W. Bush."

Obama has taken a much more multilateral approach than Bush did in the last eight years, and the world applauds it. Peace talks and negotiations with North Korea, Iran, Poland, Czechoslovakia and Russia. Outreach to the Muslim world. Drawing down in Iraq. Bringing Russia to the table over Iran (and against China) was HUGE. Nuclear disarmament talks. Strengthening the US role in combatting climate change.

Thousands of nominations were made right after Obama took office and his name was thrown into the hat, yes. But the talks and the decision about who was to win the prize *just took place*.

Obama is giving the money to charity, btw.

As a proud Obama supporter, I was shocked this morning but very happy for him and what he is doing for the whole world.

My trouble is with all the hecklers from the back of the room upset that they got everything they wanted for eight years and let this country and the world go to the trash heap. They are happy it was there and do not want to fix it.

One final note for all Bush lovers, move to Texas, succeed from the Union and workshop your king.

I don't know. I saw the nominations list and there wasn't really anyone worthy of the prize either.

Sarkozy, president of France? He would have been a worse choice.

Honestly, it's a complete joke and makes a total mockery of the Nobel organization. I suspect that Alfred Nobel is rolling in his grave over this one. It's completely ridiculous.
2009-10-09 13:31:36 UTC
I feel it is to premature.

This could (I emphasize could) also be damaging to the president and his decision making. He may be a little hesitant to engage the military further into conflicts if need be.

I am American. I voted and campaigned for Obama (in my own small way) so I feel honored that he got the nod of approval. I hope he (and we Americans) can live up to it.

As an American, I think that to criticize it would be in poor taste; an insult to the committee that honored our President and the democracy of America.

It just shows how bad the former Republican administration was. And I did not think we would get the Olympics due to Republicans getting caught water boarding.
