I know that over 130 years ago southern conservatives were democrats and northern liberals were republicans. Can someone pinpoint the switch.

It was a slow switch.
Republicans (or at least some of them like the great Teddy Roosevelt) were progressives on economic issues until FDR took that mantle away.
The Democrats had a record on racial issues that I as a Democrat consider shameful the Sixties, when the Kennedy brothers supported MLK. They switch on racial issues pretty much completed with Nixon's "southern strategy" which basically boiled down to "make white people afraid of blacks/"
Republicans weren't so much pacifist as isolationist, and there's still a streak of that among hard-core traditional conservatives (Buchanan, Paul, and others). But Vietnam generally made the Democrats the party less likely to support military action.
If you had to pick one era, I'd say it completed in the late 1960's, but even then it was just the culmination of a slow transition.

Not true. The planks have changed but the titles still remain the same. 130 years ago, ALL Americans would have disapproved of Abortion, remember, we were a very religious society. 130 years ago the big issue was slavery. The planks in each parties platforms shift with the times. It is tough to talk about Nuclear power as an issue when we just invented steam power. But what set the Democrats up as the democrats, and the republicans as the Republicans is the size of government and how much government intervention is required. That has not changed since we have had these two particular political parties. Republicans being for a strong federal government with minimal involvement in the States, and the Democrats wanting more government involvement in the daily lives of Americans.

It started to happen around the 1930s/40s with FDR, and it solidified around the late 1960s
