We could instill a system of public transportation in the cities that would make private cars essentually unneccasarry. However, if someone wanted a private car they could rent a hybrid or electric one from the goverment. In the suburbs and rural areas they could keep their cars but they would not be allowed to use them within city limits.

What do you think? I've written a whole 4 page essay on this.

Yeah that whole freedom thing is highly overrated. I think the guberment should put all kinds of restrictions on the individual. How dare we heat our homes every day in the winter. Its irresponsible to use air conditioning and fans when you can simply suffer through the heatwave, hell just because old people die of heat exhaustion we gotta save energy.

That's a great idea who needs individual liberty, that whole concept of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness is so 18th century, we need to embrace big brother and highschool students running our lives, they know what's best for us anyway.

Banning cars within the city limits may be too harsh right now. Banning them in the downtown area and certain other congested areas would make sense. But you would have to make sure adequate public transportation was in place. You could phase it in by putting a tax on parking or driving in the designated areas. Then use that money to help fund the public transportation.

No. First of all, no city has a good enough public transportation system that accommodates everyone, Secondly, telling people that they have to give up cars they own then forcing them to rent is unfair. In most larger cities like NYC most people do not have cars.

No. Automobiles are a necessity for transportation in the 21st century. The good news is the government is making a push to switch to "green" cars that will be a lot better for our environment and even get more miles to the gallon. The only downside is that they cost a lot more money than cars that run solely on gasoline.

While it is important to save energy, force of law is not the answer if you think in terms of cause and effect. If we put too many draconian restrictions on the use our resources, people are just going to get REALLY angry and rebel. Trust me, if you tried to restrict people from getting whatever car they wanted, there would be raging mobs running after you with pitch forks. The answer is and always has been EDUCATION. The best way to solve our environmental problems is to teach our children about them in our schools and get MUCH more media coverage on what's happening in our environment and what we can do to make a difference.

What about the people who don't have the five bucks it will take to take the taxi or ride the bus every day?

Renting cars can also be costly and a hassel. And electric cars get less miles. And what about people who have to commute out of town to work everyday?

What about the disabled who can't walk or bike? What about the elderly who can't walk or bike?

Are you somesort of communist nazi or something?

Yes, I read.

That is a long way to go, dear. Besides, the automobiles industries is very important to many nations, not something you can change overnight. Think about that.

Check out the small nation SIngapore, they are doing well on that.

sounds like you wrote 4 pages too much.

Having a car is a form of modern day freedom. Improvement of public transport is a better solution.

The government wouldn't EVER go for that.... Come on.

Exxon Mobil probably owns and operates half the world... They aren't going to let this happen.
