Question:
MP's protesting a 3-fold salary hike: Are they right in doing this?
?
2010-08-20 23:22:01 UTC
Government on Friday faced protests in the Lok Sabha, hours after it decided to raise MPs' salary to Rs 50,000 with several non-BJP opposition members storming the well demanding that it be raised to Rs 80,001 a rupee higher than the highest paid salary for a Government official. May be they are hiking the salary to make more people take participate in Indian politics.

But, suddenly MP's started shouting "Stop the insult of MPs" and "implement report of the parliamentary committee" were slogans chanted by SP, BSP, JD (U), RJD, Shiv Sena and Akali Dal members, forcing Speaker Meira Kumar to adjourn the House twice.

Are these MP's right in asking such a hike?

They are shamelessly wrong in doing this due to the following reasons:

1. 75% of Indians live below Rs.20/- a day.

2. Corruption is in every field of politics and today it is pride to be corrupt. There isn't even a feeling of shame. CWG nonsense is still going on.

3. An MP is NOT AN EMPLOYEE to demand salary. If it is social service, then they have to settle with a salary less than the lowest earning Indian.

4. The most shameful claim, "we want at least Re. 1/- more than buraeucrats. [A 4th fail person should get Re.1/- more than an IAS guy? Shame shame...].

5. MPs are comparing themselves with Corporate Executives. There is no performance assessment for MPs like Corporate Executives and over 90% of the electorate may not think that MPs do a good job. They are either not voted for or there is no other choice. Corporate CEOs are paid high, based on their performance.

6. The parliament saw maximum attendance on the said 'black day' and the next day the attendance fell.

Some Members of Parliament take it very easy indeed, while some slog hard, shows analysis of data compiled on MPs of the 15th Lok Sabha. The analysis showed that 10 MPs, including BJP veteran L K Advani and former minister of state for external affairs, Shashi Tharoor, for instance, have a 100 per cent attendance record. The data was provided by PRS Legislative Research. In contrast two MPs - Baliram Kashyap (BJP), and Kameshwar Baitha (Jharkhand Mukti Morcha) - have just two per cent attendance. Though the average attendance is a respectable 78 per cent, 168 of the 480 MPs (excluding 65 ministers who do not have to sign the register) had lower than 75 per cent attendance What about asking questions? Curiously, right across the political spectrum, leaders of parties in India have a tradition of not deigning to ask questions. Thus neither Sonia nor Rahul Gandhi, Mulayam Singh Yadav or his son Akhilesh Yadav, L K Advani or Lalu Prasad, has asked a single question yet. They are among the 88 MPs in all who have refrained similarly. In contrast, a single MP Anandrao Adusi of the Shiv Sena has asked 354 questions within a year. The Lok Sabha average is 66.

"There are many MPs who are going the extra mile to do good work by asking questions, debates. Their efforts often go unnoticed, but these are the ones who bring value to the House," said C V Madhukar, director, PRS Legislative Research.

This is an extremely hard question! Wait a minute while I try to think of something that has not been claimed on MPs expenses. Sorry, can't think of anything that MPs spend their salaries on, so you must be right, its Golf!

Who is there to question these deadbeats? They come to us with folded hands come election time.Once elected they wouldn't give you the time of the day.Even a new MP,immediately after the swearing -in ceremony will be like a busy bee trying to arrange an anonymous threat letter which will form the basis for him to wangle X,Y or Z category security. just to show his importance to the electorate of his constituency and also send out a message to them that they will not be allowed to approach within 200 yards from him.And you ask whether they are right in asking for a hike.If they have any sense of shame or an iota of patriotism left in them, they should not only forgo their salaries and perks but donate half their wealth to the nation like Bill Gates and Warren Buffet. But then, these worthies neither have the shame nor any fellow feeling left in them.Every man jack of them is plotting from day one in the House how to loot the nation and how much.

Have a Great Day.

I am in favor of a good pay package for the MPs. Paying them less means inviting more and more corruption at political level. More pay will mean entry of better people into the arena. And the bad fish will get weeded out in course of time. If today's politicians are not good enough, does that mean that we should never have good persons in politics?

Edit:

A healthy parliament means good citizen taking to politics. Giving them a Lakh per month is not a big deal. After all they are the most influential and important people who do make the real difference in shaping the country's destiny.

I would say Yes. Let them have what they are asking for but after ensuring that only Worthy, Hard Working & Sincere MP's would be elected......How ?

Well ,briefly speaking , bring in the Amendments to remove Vote Bank politics & influence of Black money on getting elected.

1. 100 % Mandatory voting by all Voters...thereby bringing voting percentage to 100% from existing below 40-50% only . Wider voting would certainly reduce vote banks politics based on Cast Or Religion exploitation which becomes a decisive factor for party nominations of candidates.

2. State should bear all the election expenses of all contesting candidates thus ensuring black-money-free electioneering.

.......surly a lot of matters would need to be sorted out, but that is a part of all serious Legislative Exercises. Let me tell you that all these Election norms are there in a number of countries all over the world.

Thanks & have a great day !!!

Dirty dogs of a dirty land fight amongst themselves like that only, world's woorst culture indeed.

Do Indian MPs know the pathetic condition of hutment colonies of Mumbai(Bombay), particularly in raining condition rising on a rotten flesh like lands & leaking heavily ? And if you peep inside, get 3-tier cots in which people lie to sleep as if pushed inside tooth paste box. 10 million people live in such subhuman conditions in Bombay. When Bombay floods b coz of heavy rain, many thousand children are swept away for no return in water logging. Situations in Calcutta, Delhi & Madras are a little better only. None of indian neighbours has such ditiest & biggest slum of the world. Oh development !

Most of the MPs are living a luxurious life. It is atrocious to increase their salary 3fold.

Laalu Prasad, is leading the mps in this protest.

Will he do the same to ask more aid for the drought victims in bihar?

In spite of all good work done by citizens of India to make it a most happening vibrant place ....... our politicians just muck up its image. Just imagine we are faced with financial crisis and there is inflation , terrorism and what not now these people have increased their salary. There was one news report recently which reported that our jawans are being fed stale food. What a laughing stock our nation has become Shame on these scoundrels if they get salary raise at the cost of tax payers why should we ever need to pay tax?

Now just like pre independence we the salaried class need to take "No TAx March"....................

it is shame that all party fall to this ploy of cong just few days back all opposition parties had put congress in a spot for price raise issue to stop all of these the plan of congress is to baji maaro....

Now who will dare raise price rise issue. On one side the Congress has been killing common man with its policy .

Earlier, the same non-BJP government of India started bribing them with Rs.5 crores annually in the name of Local Area Development Fund. Now, the same non-BJP government of India is further bribing them. So, this non-BJP government of India is the grand old mother of Indian Bribing Service.

While India has IAS,IPS,IFS etc from bureaucrats, this IBS is for MPs/MLAs. And it is named IBS, since the bribe money is provided by the non-BJP government itself.

Let BJP MPs/MLAs refuse the bribe to set precedent.

These Ministers are not even eligible to be treated as "Cost to the Nation" but "Loss to the Nation".
